I live in that world. Most days I find my joy from looking at pictures of where I was 100 lbs ago not where I want to be.

I've been there and know how you feel! When you know you did everything right and then still do not see the outcome you expected, it is very upsetting. It took me a long time to learn to put that aside and focus on the fact that just relying on the scale is not the way to go. I used to let it affect my mood, but I've learned that there are other factors that affect the number, and many are outside my control. There could be numerous reasons for the one pound gain, from water retention to muscle gain. Focus more on how you feel and let that be your guide.

I have up and down days of being discouraged, encouraged, discouraged, encouraged!!!
Most days begin positively, encouraged, but by bedtime, I am disappointed in myself.
I say, as I am right now, that tomorrow will be better and I will walk and I will count calories more closely and stay away from the foods that are fattening, etc.
But I almost always mess up.
Only recently has this happened, I am slowly overcoming an injury that has left me unable to walk for exercise and I have let it be an excuse to slowly add bad habits.
But, as always, I prepare for bed, with the hopes and encouraging thoughts that tomorrow I will do better.
What else can I do, try harder!!!

Have no fear! If we constantly live in fear of the details that are upon us everyday, we fail to see the bigger picture.

I'm sure you've changed a lot of habits and feel better about a lot of things in your life - energy, health changing, body shape changing. Our bodies actually naturally fluctuate in body weight everyday, depends on water intact, time of day, etc.

Best way to see how you're changing is to try on some jeans or a shirt that is form fitting. Or think of that pound as muscle from adding good workout habits to your daily routine.

Always remember that your health is the reason you are making these changes. Not for the numbers on a scale or someone's perspective of you. You put yourself first and that discourage will shift into courage of acceptance and grace.

These kinds of ups and downs are par for the course, everyone who diets has them. Keep on going, if you are young, as you age, you will find this happens often, over the years. It's just the way it is, don't believe the books and celebs that's it's easy...............hang tough!!

It takes time for you see results. If you can keep positive thoughts and keep at it you will see progress. We didn't gain the weight overnight and won't lose it that way either. Please keep trying.,

What you're experiencing is perfectly normal. It's nothing more than a temporary water weight gain that will pass in a few days. Ever notice your weight goes up during TOM ? Most women tend to "gain" weight during their menstrual cycle. Is that a fat gain ? Nope. it's nothing more than a temporary water weight gain that passes in a few days.

I can easily gain or lose as much as 3-4 pounds in a day because of a shift in my water weight.

Don't believe it ? I can prove it. When you get up in the morning, weigh yourself BEFORE you go to the bathroom. then go do your business and weigh yourself again. Did you lose weight ? YES ! Did you lose fat ? NOPE. These types of fluctuations on the scale really are perfectly normal.

And well, not to get TMI, but did you weigh yourself after a bowel movement ? Your body's waste products have weight. So, if you don't do a poop in the morning the physical weight of all the food you ate the day before is still in your intestines. Water has weight. the food you eat has weight and they both can cause the scale to go up.

So, don't assume something must be wrong if the scale goes up now and then. You're doing to see many ups and downs as you lose. And this IS perfectly normal.

Can a woman gain a pound of muscle ? Not in a week. Even if you took steroids, you would not gain a pound of muscle in a week. However, it is extremely easy to see the scale go up as a result of water retention over night or even a week.

It's always discouraging to feel like you haven't accomplished a goal but you have!!!! You have created more lean muscle, without a doubt! That's a really important accomplishment. I bet if you look at your muscles while you are working out you will see that they have become stronger and, as someone already mentioned, muscle weighs more than fat. The number on the scale is not the only indicator as to your physical condition. Give yourself a pat on the back for hanging in there and exercising regularly, you deserve it! emoticon

You're getting muscles! (I hope you're measuring inches too— they're usually a better indicator than weight, anyway.)

If it makes you feel better, I finished up the 30-hour famine (World Vision) yesterday and weighed exactly the same before and after. As long as you're exercising and eating right, you're doing just fine.

I was doing pretty good (at least for me) in the exercise category then first, I had a pacemaker installed and that stopped any cardio and now I have developed at mysterious condition that at first was thought to be internal bleeding, but now the docs aren't sure. I was told last week that he couldn't say that I was bleeding but something is causing really serious edema. Meeting with a blood doc next week, then a CT scan and then, who knows.

All I can say right now is that I have zero leg strength and have difficulty walking and I am a definite fall risk. Needless to say, my exercise has dropped to zero and I have added 18 pounds in the last 3 weeks. That is not possible as my daily kcal intake is around 1400. It would take around 60,000 extra kcals to cause this.

Not sure what the future brings, but I remain hopeful.

Also, muscle weighs more than fat. So as you build muscle you may gain a little -- but once that muscle is there it begins to burn fat.

Hi, I can relate to your frustration. Four years ago I lost 30 pounds on the "Johns Hopkins diet for General Motors". I kept it off as long as I biked. Then I fell off the wagon when we started building our house and gained it all back. I am now relosing it and determined to not let that happen again. This diet was given to me by a friend (and there is a vegetarian version which I used). (I make no claims about its healthiness or efficiency - I can just tell you it worked for me when nothing else did.) The beauty of it is you eat all you want -- just only certain things. By day four (the "banana day") you aren't hungry. So if you can hang in there for the first three days, you'll be doing great. I usually lose 5-7 pounds each cycle, but 2 come back when I start "eating" normally. So I always look at it as a "net loss". I love that it's one week on and one week off. I tried doing a second week in a row (which is not healthy nor recommended), and I didn't lose much. I think maybe it tricks your system. Anyway, google it and you'll find -- maybe the link above will take you there. Don't get discouraged. You'll make it ! :)

Not seeing the result you are hoping for on the scale can be very discouraging. Remember, it's just one measure on the way to a healthier lifestyle. Remember that you did more exercise this week; that's something to be proud of and is a great accomplishment!

Hang in there! Keep doing the positive things that you are doing, and sooner or later, that scale will show it, too!

find other ways to reinforce your healthy behaviors, not the scale. I know....easier said than done.

I know it can be disheartening to see the scale go up despite your extra effort. You want to see that your efforts paid off but the scale is really not always the best method of gauging your progress. Weight is not a static number. Think of how much of our body weight is made up of fluid and how much it fluctuates, even throughout a single day. This can drastically effect scale weight. So it isn't the best method of testing fat loss.

If you've increased the duration, type or intensity of your exercise program then I can almost guarantee your weight gain is fluid (glycogen stores) to compensate for your increased activity. This fluid gain can mask fat loss or even cause an increase in weight.

It takes a 3500 cal surplus above your body's maintenance calorie requirements to gain 1 lb of fat. So unless you've been creating a +500 cal surplus each day this week, you didn't gain a pound of fat.

Use the scale, like anything else, to see your progress over time, not in a single day or week. Have other methods of measuring your progress to keep motivation high when the scale isn't being friendly.

Give yourself a big hug for having such an awesome week! You should be proud of yourself.

I ate better this week and worked out more than last week...yet I gained a pound. How is this even possible? I am seriously discouraged.
