It does not have the same training effect exactly. However, if you don't have time, you don't have time, and getting a run in within two runs still has greater training benefit then just not doing it.
If it's not a habit, just do the best you can! Remember a single run will never make or break your training. It's all about consistency.

You can break it up if

1) you're not making a habit of doing this on a regular basis, as 2 shorter runs obviously does not have the same endurance training effect as 1 longer run.

2) it's not your long run

sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do, but in general splitting an already short run into even shorter segments isn't a good idea.

That's what I was thinking to but I just wanted to make sure. Thanks for the insight! (:

Are you following a training plan for a half-marathon or similar? If yes, then yeah, the point is to run all of it at one time because the point of the training plan is to help you build endurance to run a 10k/half/full/other distance. If you're not training for something specific, it doesn't matter but you still won't be working towards building up your endurance.

What do you mean by "supposed to"? Are you running for a particular goal? Are you a regular runner? Why are you running 5.5 miles?

Today I am supposed to run 5.5 miles, but I don't have time to do it all in one go. Does it matter if I do one part in the morning and the other part at night?
