OK after blowing up an egg in my microwave this morning (what a mess ! ) I decided to put together a delicious yogurt concoction. I mixed 1/2 cup Lite & Fit Vanilla with 1/2 cup Wally World Shredded Wheat, 1/2 cup blueberries and 1/8 cup smashed walnuts. After eating that I scraped off the egg from the inside of my microwave onto a piece of toast and devoured it.
Not only a healthy breakfast but by my calculations I knocked off half the calories I consumed when I cleaned the microwave.
Yogurt isn't that expensive, and one cup isn't going to hurt you or break you. Every time you go to the store, grab a couple of different types. Check the label quickly to make sure it doesn't have any ingredients you don't want and it isn't ridiculously high in calories. (There are a few yogurts out there whose nutrition labels look pretty identical to Ben & Jerry's.) Then try them. If there's one you don't like, throw it away and don't buy it again. Eventually, you'll find several kinds that you like, and then you can read the labels to decide which of the ones you like is the best for your nutritional needs. You might even buy different ones for different days-- for example, Greek-style yogurts are high in protein but lower in calcium than regular, so if you plan your menus in advance, you can schedule in Greek yogurt for days when the rest of your meals don't quite give you the protein you want, and regular on days when you need a calcium boost.
You have time to learn and work on this stuff. You don't have to get the "perfect" yogurt right off the bat, especially if fretting over yogurt is stressing you to the point where you start considering McDonalds'. The differences among them aren't huge, so have fun picking randomly until you're ready to settle.
Browse the menu at McDonald's, and tell me again how few options there were...lol
What we all did was choose 4-5 menu items that we loved, like Quarter Pounders, McNuggets, and large fries, and have them 3-4 times a week. I ate the 2 cheesburger meal a LOT.
So out of dozens of items, we decided to stick to several that we truly loved, after probably trying them all. We did this at every fast food place. I like double cheeseburger from Burger King, and soft tacos at Taco Bell. If I was to eat there today, I would choose these same few menu items. It wasn't that I had less options, just that I had favorites.
Yogurt can be the same way. Yes, there are multiple companies, which have several types of yogurts, in dozens of flavors. So why not try them all, and choose 4-5 favorites.
The only difference is, you will be eating yogurt, instead of McDonald's. So even if it isn't the perfect cup of yogurt, it will be healthier than anything you can find at McDonald's.
This true about fruits and vegetables also. Corn may not be the healthiest food in my opinion, nor are bananas, but it is all relative. Compared to McNuggets, or a Double Quarter Pounder, they are incredibly healthy.
It is enough to be switching to yogurt, over Big Mac's. You don't need the most nutritional yogurt. The worst yogurt is healthier than the best french fries ( nutrition wise, not taste..lol ), so if that is the trade, then take it.
This would be like starting to exercise, and instead of walking, asking the members what was the best race to run to improve your cardiovascular system. Some might say a 5K, many would suggest a half marathon, and a few would suggest a marathon. Great exercise. True, if you could do it, but walking is probably best at the start. Same way with diet. Pick the tastiest yogurt, and see if you can stay away from McDonald's. Pick healthy categories like nuts, fruits, vegetables, and yogurt, and worry less about finding the healthiest option from each group. Instead pick 4-5 of each that you love, just like you did at KFC,McDonald's, and Taco Bell.
Fage 0 percent fat plain! You can do anything with it! I used to make my own "Greek" from an excellent jarred non-tat plain yogurt, but Fage is now my fast food go-to !
Being a type 1 diabetic, I usually put my fruit exchange in with the Fage. Add lo-fat cottage cheese and I have my "sundae"!

I'll join the Fage Greek yogurt chorus. I buy the plain and put orange marmalade in it -- it's SO YUMMY! I also buy the flavored ones. I'll buy Chobani if it's on sale and Fage isn't, but think Fage is far superior.
I won't buy Yoplait or store brands. They have fillers and chemicals and just seem so gross. Let us know what you find -- and actually like!

I make my own yogurt, it is so easy and I never have to worry about all the additives, fillers and thickening agents used in commercial brands. I make a batch and it last me 2 weeks, if I want thicker Greek style yogurt, I strain it in cheese cloth and it comes out thick and creamy.

I would also check that it contains "live, active cultures" on ingredients list.
For regular just eating a cup of yogurt, I like Dannon Lite & Fit Greek yogurts. They're nicely sweet and they're only 80 calories. They do have artificial sweeteners, but I gave one to my husband who scorns that stuff and he didn't even notice it contained artificial sweeteners, and in fact put a box of 18 cups in our grocery cart on the next trip to the store.
For cooking, as an accompaniment to Indian food or for any other purpose where you don't want sweet yogurt, I like Oikos nonfat plain Greek yogurt.
Unsweetened yogurt is an acquired taste, but once you acquire it, it's really good stuff.
I will preface this by saying that I used to think I despised all yogurt. But, I found that I actually just didn't like the fruit-flavored yogurts in the little containers. They actually make me feel a little like gagging when I eat them (which I usually won't because...well...I despise them). But, then I found plain Greek yogurt and I LOVE it so much that I pretty much eat some every day. But, I don't love it with fruit. I find it tolerable with fruit (no gagging, but not really that enjoyable to me, either). Anyway, I flavor my plain, nonfat, Greek Yogurt at home, usually with some Splenda and a touch of honey. I enjoy eating it plain and I also enjoy eating it with granola for breakfast (buying a healthy and tasty granola is another topic...).
I like Fage Nonfat (0%) Greek Yogurt and I usually buy the large tub of it at Costco (or Target, when it's on sale there). I enjoy the thickness of this yogurt and I find it to have a smooth texture.
I've tried Chobani Nonfat Greek Yogurt too (bought a large tub recently because it was on sale). I enjoyed the taste (had a bit of a pleasant tang to it), but, while it was thicker than regular yogurt, it wasn't as thick as Fage and I really do prefer the thickness of Fage... But, I'd definitely eat the Chobani again.
Overall, I guess it depends what you're looking for in a yogurt because you won't eat it if you don't like it. I do think that it can be a lot healthier if you flavor it at home.
I've tried making yogurt at home, but haven't had much success making nonfat yogurt (my preference for a few reasons) because it has turned out grainy (which made it inedible for me). Other people seem to have better luck with this, though...
I know I'm in the minority here, but I cannot bring myself to eat plain yogurt. I have to have some type of fruit in it. I'm a huge fan of Chobani. I LOVE the Chobani flips, having the added crunch is nice! But as others have said, you need to find something you enjoy eating. :)

Watch out for vanilla yogurt--vanilla flavor seems to always come with sweetener and any yogurt with vanilla will have a BUNCH more carbs. Any plain, natural yogurt that comes in a big tub is probably fine. The bad yogurts are things like go-gurt and ones that come in the tiny cups. If you want to make your search simpler, avoid the tiny cups of yogurt.
What is available will depend on your location--some yogurts are local/regional. Here are ones that I like and think are OK nutritionally...in PLAIN:

ETA: I love Siggis too, but it is expensive and not widely available where I live.

I eat "regular" yogurt and not the Greek. While Greek has more protein, the "regular" has more calcium, and that's what I'm after. I don't drink milk and have a hard time getting enough calcium on a daily basis, but I have no trouble with the protein. I actually like non-fat yogurt; while the kind with fat in it is creamier, the non-fat has a "lightness" to it that I prefer. Either way, "regular" or Greek, I'd agree to avoid the ones with "stir-ins", and the fruit on the bottom kind usually has added sugar.
I totally agree that the type of yogurt you buy needs to be the one you like and will eat. It does no good at all, if something is the "most nutritious"-- if you don't like it and either won't eat it, or won't enjoy eating it.
The only type of yogurt that you "should" be buying is the kind that you like and will eat that meets your individual needs. The kinds with candies and sugary granola to mix in can probably be eliminated as they are too caloric and not nutritious enough for the calorie buck.
Greek-style yogurt has more protein, so you will see most Sparkers eat it. However, it is thicker and can be a bit of an acquired taste. I started by using plain 0% Fage or Great Value as a replacement for sour cream and in recipes and smoothies. Now, I can eat most of it. Lots of people love Chobani, but I think it has a weird taste to me. Most Greek yogurt is non-fat, but you will see some in the 2% range. Most is fruit on the bottom style, but some are labeled "blends" where the flavor is mixed through.
I personally like the Dannon Light & Fit Greek (the coconut flavor especially - yum; this has a really nice protein pay off for the calories though you do have artificial sweeteners), Yoplait 100 calorie Greek, and Oikos for flavored. As a sour cream sub and to use in recipes, Fage wins hands down, but I usually but the Great Value brand as it is much cheaper.
I have tried to mix jam in with plain as some PPs have suggested to control sugar content (and as a cost saving measure). I did not like the taste result.
Regular yogurt is just fine as well. You'll find a greater range of fat levels, but the trend is for Greek yogurt, so I have seen the shelf space on these shrink. I care only for non-fat regular as the rest is too thick for my taste. I can do maybe low fat at the most. This tends to be lower calorie, but the protein content is not as high.
My suggestion? Pick a flavor you like - say blueberry - and pick up one container from each brand to see what you enjoy and what works with your needs - though you may want to put a high limit on calories - say 150 - as some varieties can have a surprising amount.
Fage 0% Plain Greek Yogurt probably has the least sugar in it ( it's the one I found with the least sugar) ...add berries to sweeten...and 4 walnuts for crunch and heart health and it's a bone friendly food. Fruit already in yogurt contain excess sugars
You can also sprinkle some fresh lime juice over the Yogurt Many people add dill weeds and chopped cucumber to yogurt and eat it as a salad

I like actual greek yogurt, so I buy a big tub of either the Fage, Chobani, or the store brand stuff depending whats on sale since its cheaper than the individual cups and its easier to control the portions that way. If you go for greek yogurt, check the ingredients list to make sure there aren't any thickeners in it. If there are thickeners, its "greek-style" and you don't get the same benefits. The store brand greek yogurt is just as real as Fage or Chobani, the ingredients are exactly the same so don't be afraid to go that route.

I buy Fage brand Greek yogurt. Plain would be the healthiest, with your own fruit added, but I prefer the kinds that have tons o' sugar. :) I agree with a previous poster that I usually hate completely fat-free dairy products, but the 0% Fage options are actually pretty good. I like the blueberry acai, cherry pomegranate, strawberry goji, and mango guanabana best.

Ok well... yogurt tends to be pretty good "nutritionally" (lots of good protein, calcium) so if you're trying to get a "good" one, what you want to watch for more than anything is "not too much added sugar."
IDEALLY, you'd want to get the totally unsweetened, unflavored kind, and then just add your own sweetener (sugar, splenda, or just fruit) in a controlled fashion.
REALISTICALLY - you're probably not going to want to do that. It's somewhat inconvenient, not to mention potentially shocking-to-the-ole-tastebuds to switch in one big fell swoop from "sweetened" to "unsweetened." I would venture to say that unsweetened yogurt is a bit of an acquired taste.
A HAPPY MEDIUM would be to stick with what you know, flavour-wise, and aim for products labelled "greek" or "greek style." These are thicker, and higher in protein, than regular yogurt. More protein = "better nutritionally." Not to mention i find the thicker greek-style yogurts seem a bit more of a "hearty snack" than the runny kind. I am not sure what brands are available to you, but a couple that come up again and again on these boards as being "good" are Fage and Chobani.
Fat, low fat, or no fat? That's a bit of a "matter of taste." I CANNOT STAND zero-fat dairy (with the exception of Costco's Kirkland Brand plain greek style, which is palatable... most of the zero-fat stuff though, i find has a nasty viscous texture). So I always get at least 2%. Maybe up to 6%. Anything more than 6% is going to be pretty high cal, which might leave you unhappy with the portion size.
I'd say - try a few varieties, and see which ones meet your personal taste criteria, it's a bit of an experiment to find one you like. Really it doesn't matter too much if your preferred brand is the most healthful on the market, *if you like it* you can adjust portion sizes to make it work for you. If you DON'T like it, it really doesn't matter how healthy it is, as you'll end up resenting it and not eating it. (been there, done that).
I suppose the one thing I'd suggest shying away from, would be the cute single-servings with the little cuplet of granola sprinkles (or other add-ins), as those little sprinkles typically add a lot of sugar (and maybe fat) without adding much in the way of nutrition. "Fun" and "crunchy" sure, but... at a nutritional cost.
I would like to find a good yogurt too. The kinds with aspartame or other artifical sweeteners leave a weird taste in my mouth and I don't care for them.

I like Siggi's brand Islandic Skyr yogurt. I know, I know. It sounds weird, like you had to go on a quest involving yak-riding in order to find it, but it really is good. It's a super-thick yogurt (even thicker then Greek) with a huge amount of protein per serving. It's made from grass-fed cow milk, no artificial ingredients, and half the amount of sugar found in most brands of yogurt. Most yogurt has ridiculous amounts of sugar, unless you go for the artificially sweetened crap. I usually get mine from Whole Foods, but I've seen Siggi's locally (NJ) in Target and my local grocer, Shop Rite. It's made in upstate NY, but I don't know if it's available nationally.

I went shopping for healthy food yesterday and spent 2 hours in Wally World. There are too many choices. So many that it became overwhelming. Now I remember why I used to eat fast food...because it's fast. Actually was thinking how much easier it would be if I just got in my car and went to McDonalds. I didn't though.
OK enough of my rambling cause what I really want to know is what yogurt I should be buying. Something healthy and tasty. There are too many to chose from so hopefully you all can help me narrow it down. No lectures please. Keep it simple.
