Where I work, the men's bathroom is always much, much worse than the women's. And if there is a problem with the women's (no paper, toilet clogged, etc) a woman will always come up to the counter and in a lowered voice, tell us about the problem so we can fix it. The men never do. Toilet clogged? Just keep using it til it overflows. No paper? well... I don't know what they do then, but they don't come tell us the paper is out. Or the soap or anything else.
Presumably they don't act like that at home. I guess maybe it's the thinking of, *someone else* will clean up after them.
Same sort of thing in women's rooms at various places, where they'll "squat" so as not to touch the seat and then pee all over said seat and not clean it up. It's not their house and some anonymous *someone else* cleans the bathrooms, so they don't bother cleaning up after themselves.
As for the tiny stalls. I know when it became routine to have a handicapped stall available in public restrooms (years and years ago you rarely saw a handicapped stall anywhere), they made room for said stall by making the others much smaller. It is not illegal or anything to use the handicapped stall if you are not handicapped. Equal access does not mean, exclusive immediate access. And sometimes having tiny stalls means they can have one more stall, than if they made them bigger. So the inconvenience of trying to get in there and sit down and maneuver around the tp dispenser and napkin disposal box, is worth it just for the availability of another toilet and not having to wait as long in line.

Oh, when you have an international clientele using a bathroom, all bets are off. Toileting is probably a bigger cultural divide than language! I worked at an English language institute with students from all over the world, a lot of whom didn't know one word of English yet, and that school had spent years figuring out how to diagram EVERYTHING, from how to turn on the faucet to "Don't wash your feet in the toilet bowl. It's for...." And I can sympathize, because I've been in places where I just had to hold it because I couldn't figure out the toilet, and I've been in places where I probably wrecked the plumbing by putting paper where it shouldn't go.

one of my first jobs was cashiering at a 24 hour convenience store/gas station. The night shift duties included cleaning the bathrooms. Ours were locked - customers had to get the key from the cashier.
the ONLY way to get the urine smell out of the men's room was to remove all the paper products from the dispensers, spray cement cleaner on the walls and floors, and let it sit for at least 30 minutes. Then hose the bathroom down. This had to be done once a day. I do remember some very funny graffiti on the condom machine in the men's room: THIS IS THE WORST GUM I EVER TASTED!
the women's bathroom there was usually not too bad. We'd have some occasional issues, but not many.
I have seen some very disgusting public restrooms over the years. I don't know what is wrong with people! They do the most vile things.

I do know, from living in Texas, that some people who have lived in Mexico are taught not to flush the toilet paper because they have more delicate (or rustic) plumbing there. Well, those people are no longer in Mexico, and they need to quit leaving their dirty toilet paper in the small trash cans that are provided for feminine hygiene product disposal.
As for messes being left on or around the toilets, people JUST DON'T CARE. Someone else is SUPPOSED to clean up their mess. I think it goes along with the "entitlement" that quite a few people in this day and age feel they have.
I thoroughly agree. Public restrooms are just nastified. Even if you can't SEE it, they're disgusting. And I'm not about that "what do their homes look like." They probably look fine. Some people just don't give-a what offence they create for others. Like, nobody's there to "spank" them, so they can just do whatever they like. Pigs. Heathens.
And S-T-U-P-I-D, too! You *do NOT* get disease from the backs of your legs. If you're rubbing "other parts" on the commode seat, I'd say you have some serious issues going on. There's no excuse to squat over a seat and spray all over it. If you do, well, you use the paper on the wall to wipe your own body. What's wrong with giving a swipe to the seat?!? ignorance, stupidity, or lack of class. Take your pick.
Personally, I have a little bottle of dilute bleach that is a very fine disinfectant to apply with whatever paper products are available in the stall. And yes, I wipe it off afterwards, too, so it doesn't damage the next user's clothing... even if they may not "deserve" that consideration!

Women's restrooms can be just as nasty, I have seen some pretty repulsive things in my travels. I cannot believe how downright nasty people can be!

They are both equally disgusting. It used to be my job to clean the restrooms at my work...and they are both gross. I know at my work it only got done once a day...even when people would say something about them not being clean. But, there are other places that clean them hourly, or say they do.
Oh Lord, you have searched me and you know me. -Psalm 139:1
One of the problems is that cleaning staff is always the first to go when there's a budget cut. Which is totally STUPID, because then the cleaning work goes to the people who: A: have no clue how to do it right, and B: are taking three or four times as long to do it, and losing that time from their regular work. I worked at a business once where they cut the cleaning staff and had the exempt staff do the cleaning. Instead of getting the bathrooms cleaned in an hour at $4.25, they were paying the equivalent of $20/hour for 2 or 3 hours, and eventually lost qualified, experienced office staff because these were people who had worked their way through college cleaning toilets so they wouldn't HAVE to clean toilets. Real smart, bean-counters.
As for people not flushing, a lot of them are afraid to touch the handle. I have one friend who is germ-phobic, and if she can't flush it with her foot, she doesn't flush it. So now I'M always grossed out by the thought that people are putting their disgusting shoes on the stick-style handles, and I have to use a paper towel to touch it with.
Well this is an interesting discussion. Ok so I think that the majority of public restrooms are disgusting, but what are we really expecting here. It's a PUBLIC restroom. We have NO idea how these people using them have been raised. Maybe they hardly flush a toilet at home, maybe they were not taught to wash after using a toilet, maybe they don't even have toilet paper at home, maybe they have some kind of handicap that prevents them from flushing etc, maybe the toilet was so messy that the last person had to squat, maybe..................
I do think some of this is common sense, but then who am I to say. If I do see an issue with the restroom I do let customer service know, but in a respectable way. I do use bathroom etiquette and I do teach my kids how to use a public restroom respectfully.
Ok so maybe that is a good topic for a How To book!

My daughter and her family just moved to India. She shares as my son below that toilet facilities are much different in 3rd world countries. .I am thankful for bathrooms..and thankful that people use them..according to my son who was in Iraq..people used the side of the road..like in India..We are blessed to even have bathrooms.
I have to agree that the womens restroom is the worst. I used to work in an office building. There were only 3 occupied suites on our floor but the restroom always looked like it was in a concert venue on a Saturday night. TP everywhere. Water everywhere. Disgusting.

Some are cleaner than others-those being in my area B.J.'s, Kohl's and Walmart's are pretty clean too. Also the Apple Computer store. I agree with the post that people should be considerate enough to flush the toilet- it only takes 30 seconds

As one who had to clean all those public toilets I have a question to ask. Why don't people flush the toilets. Do they not know that someone is coming along after them, and we don't always get a chance to clean it, or do they just not care? I think the second answer is true. Both men and women are equally gross in this way.

As someone who has worked in restaurants & bars & had to clean bathrooms, I can say that the women's bathroom was usually the worst. At one bar I worked at I absolutely refused to clean the bathrooms on the weekends-luckily the owner/boss had farming experience so it didn't bother him& he did it. (I wasn't the only employee who refused to do it.)
But-as far as what KJ said about no TP in the bowl & that sort of thing-many times a public toilet will have an issue, like you need to hold down the handle until it all goes down. Just last weekend at a restaurant, there was a single toilet bathroom with a "present" in it. Otherwise the bathroom looked clean-one good press of the handle, all gone.
And I totally agree with the design of some public bathroom stalls-you shouldn't have to prop yourself up against the back of the stall in order to close the door, and you shouldn't have to navigate around the TP dispenser to sit down!
I echo the statements about women's rooms. Gak! I hate using them, and I've heard that they are far worse then men's rooms. I have got to give credit to some businesses, however, who have their employees do a bathroom check every hour or so. These are the businesses I like going back to.
The most gross thing women have to deal with is when another woman hasn't cleaned her mess off the toilet during "that time of the month!" Can you believe that anyone would leave that for someone else to find???
I always get weird looks in public restrooms when I grab a bunch of paper towels and wipe the counters off around the sinks which always have pools of water around them. It sucks having to hold your purse while trying to wash your hands (that is IF you do wash your hands -- I see plenty of people just walking out of the stall and back out into the business). But, I try to set a good example for others.
Another pet peeve is when toilet paper is out and seat covers are out.
My suggestion -- don't be taken in by this filth. Complain, complain and complain until businesses clean up their acts! I do it loudly, so that others hear me embarrassing the business.

Women are filthy in public restrooms. There are no germs on legs! But they pee and worse all over for someone else to sit on! PIGS!. They won't even flush the toilet and leave the mess for someone else to walk in. I heard a passenger yelling at the airport about how awful the cleaning staff was while the cleaning woman was right there. I said, "You've got to be kidding me" "She didn't do that but she has to clean up after the filthy person who did."

I'd like to comment on what MLAN613 said about the bad stench in the locker room toilet area. She said people should leave it at home. #1 - I myself can't always control when I have to go. #2 - I understand that there is an awful stench from those with conditions such as Crohn's. I'm sure if they could do something about that they sure would.

No it is not a man thing. I think women's bathrooms are disgusting I am ashamed to be a part of womanhood when I see some of the bathrooms. A few weeks ago we had gone to a State Park I had to use the bath room bad. I could not believe my eyes, every stall at feces on the commode lid & floor plus with toilet paper strung all over. I came out of there yelling my head off!!!! The beach was filled with people. I do not care if a person had an accident they should have cleaned the mess up, either someone did this on purpose or all 4 people had an issue. I find most women's bathrooms a pig sty. I can just imagine their homes. Judy ( from PA. )

Sometimes the women's toilets are vile too - though we have some that are really well looked after. In UK public toilets are given a star rating but I don't think it's mandatory to display them; they only seem to get displayed when they've had a very high rating.

I'm a guy and let me tell you that it has been my experience that more times than not, regardless of what kind of establishment it is, I walk into a stall and see an unflushed and splattered mess on the toilet.
Sometimes I see unflushed and no sign of toilet paper in the bowl...... o_O!?
How does THAT work?
Obviously the "automated" stalls foil the plans of the unclean so I imagine they keep searching for a restroom that isn't green.
Have you experienced this or is this just a man-thing?
