If you're experiencing some DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness) from your strength training workout, a protein shake isn't going to help. As another person noted, some light cardiovascular exercise and some stretching will help relieve the soreness. With time, your body will adapt to the routine and you'll start feeling less sore post workout.
My personal opinion is that the post workout protein shakes are a poor substitute for a healthy diet. If you're eating right, your body is already getting the necessary macronutrients it needs. Also, some of those protein drinks can pack 300+ per bottle. So, you may find yourself drinking more calories than you eat. a sandwich can have fewer calories than some of those protein shakes.
Nah, the SARGE is right. Many of the studies have recommended a PINT of chocolate milk as a good post workout recovery drink. You might need more if you're doing something extremely intense (like a 10K). but for most workouts, a pint is enough. You want to have a little something to keep your blood sugar levels stable as well as start replenishing that muscle glycogen.
Protein helps you lose weight- but only if you're active while drinking it. If you aren't an avid exerciser, the additional protein gets converted to fat. As far as the soreness goes... I recommend a hot bath and some icy hot!

If I'm ultra sore, I usually have a banana with pb to get some potassium in and help with cramping instead of protein.

I don't think it helps with soreness- but I do have a protein shake after strength workouts to up my protein for the day. it's easy and tasty, and honestly sometimes just fits into my caloric plan for the day. i also don't always feeling like eating FOOD after a workout, so the shake goes down easier. stretching helps with the soreness- stretch after your workout and the next day. and stay active- it helps loosen them up again!

I agree that protein isn't going to help with muscle soreness. As long as you're in your SparkPeople recommended range for protein, you should be fine. We always recommend trying to get your protein from natural food sources instead of supplements if at all possible.

Hi Peeps, So I had strength training session for 40 mins yesterday, and I am very sore all over. I read somewhere that protein consumption helps with the soreness after strength sessions. I am trying to lose weight, is it still good for me?
This won't be just the phase, this will be my the lifestyle!
