I must have a low baseline for strength, too then ... my belly dance teacher went all drills on us yesterday and it was reflected in my blood sugars being higher (my glucometer reading reads higher always, EXCEPT after a quite intense cardio session ... or after recovering from a vinyasa yoga session such as what was described below ...) ... but I DO feel stronger ..

Not a cardio session! And my favorite kind of exercise, too emoticon

You may be in error in assuming you need more cardio due to diabetes than you do some other fitness option. The formula for fitness, irrespective of age is three fold in the following ranked order, nutrition (diet) is number 1, strength training is number t2 and cardio is a poor 3rd contrary to the current urban fitness myth.

Monitor and control your nutrition, find a strength programme you can use, neither yoga or Pilates qualify as strength training and add cardio to improve your cardiovascular fitness. Aproper strength training programme will increase your ability to do everything you do on a daily basis.

In your expertise, for the most part, you are right.

In fact, my yoga teacher - who has cardiovascular issues - probably impaired peripheral arterial function, despite her young age - claims she eschews practically all cardio because of her condition. [Do not know if she herself can do big-time inversions. I avoid so much as crane pose, preferring crow pose even though balance is more precarious because your head is more "level"--and, of course, all inversions including holding downward dog too long]

But the style she teaches is quite cardio ... insofar as my baseline is low - I can't walk fast enough with my bad feet - enough to need a custom category on the fitness tracker, for walking ...

I'm not sure I really understand your question?

Yoga has benefits no matter what your fitness level. It's generally not a total replacement for cardio or strength, but it's a great complement to any fitness program, no matter what your goals are.

As a woman who is on there in years, who medically can't do inversions anymore, and who needs cardio a LOT more than she needs yoga because of Diabetes Type 2 ... it strikes me about the differing orientations between old-school (or any school) aerobic dance and yoga.

Can you imagine if power yoga classes took from the "Jackie Sorensen lineage" ... and became all mild, Shiva Rea-inspired, (perhaps to YOU PURISTS) slightly insipid aerobics-infused - without CLEAR progression - classes. And yet was taught in an actual studio and not some crowded (even if upscale) gym?

Then there would be no backlash ...

And the yoga studio managers would not try to get to you take (3 classes a day if you want)
