Thanks guys! These are all great suggestions. I'm going to order Zombies, Run!, since I think having a storyline might get me to the gym more often and occupy that part of my brain that starts being annoying when I'm on the treadmill. Plus, it's October... It's zombie season.

Here's one you might find helpful:

At the bottom of that page are links to a few others (running for endurance and running for speed.)

If you're looking for something to make your treadmill workouts fun, I can't recommend Zombies, Run! highly enough. It's a smartphone app and super fun. (Note that it costs $8, but is well, well worth it! They do sometimes run sales on it, especially right around Halloween, though, so it might be cheaper right now.)

I too have a hard time motivating myself when I have to run on the 'dreadmill.' I do a fair amount of intervals (3 mins @ steady state, 1 min sprint, etc). I also do pyramids where I start at a pace that I can maintain for a while and each minute increase the pace by 0.1 mile/min until I'm sprinting and then step it back down the same way. That usually kills 20-30 minutes and I get a speed workout in.

Another thought: have you checked out any running clubs/group runs in your area? The local running store hosts one each week in my area and I can find someone who has similar goals to mine so even when it's dark out I'm not by myself but with a group.

I did the couch to 5k plan this spring and while I didn't love it, I actually stuck to the schedule and now I can run 30 minutes without stopping. I've been running on and off in a park near my house where I get a beautiful view of the river and bridges, but it's not well-lit and it's just gotten too dark to go out there lately. I'm having a hard time motivating myself to keep up with my normal run now that I'm stuck going back to the gym on a treadmill two nights a week. A lot of my tricks that got me to run faster don't work when the treadmill sets my pace. Does anyone know a good treadmill/interval workout series that will actually get me to go to the gym? I've tried coming up with games for myself and using the treadmill's interval programs, but I like planning things out and having a program that I can stick to.

I'd also love to know what you guys use to distract yourself at the gym. The last time I went the only treadmills left were right in front of a news channel that shall not be named and that didn't help my mood.
