It's trial and error. My perfect popping time is 1 min 36 seconds. You use your nose and waiting for the pops to slow down to about one every 2 seconds. I did notice a better taste with the brand names of popcorn. Worth the extra little bit of money.

I have done this, and have mixed results. I never buy the prepackaged microwave stuff anymore ... due to all the negative information about all those chemical ingredients.

I will if I am make popcorn, and have the time, will get out the air popper.

One of these days, I will buy a heavy kettle type of pot with lid for on the stove ... SO GOOD!!! and all those fun childhood memories to boot.

I've been doing the paper bags of popcorn for awhile now. I don't staple the bag but fold it over twice. If you find white paper bags they seem to work best.
This is SO much healthier for you.. AND for kids. Honey and cinnamon are good on it. Enjoy!

I have an air popper I use that. Yes, compared to our old time popcorn it doesn't taste the same. "ya gotta do ,what ya gotta do" HA Ha Ha

Popcorn is my single favorite snack of all time. I grew up in a rather poor family, but we had enough money for my mother to pop corn, using lard, on the stove top in a really large covered pan. Then she coated the popped corn with real butter. And then some salt. We would have that snack several times a month.

Now, I use my Stir-Crazy Popper and pop Orville Redenbache's kernel corn in extra virgin olive oil (no, it doesn't burn). I put no salt or butter on it. No, it is not as good as that my mother made, but I still love eating it. Reasonably healthy and a lot of fiber.

I've been making this for awhile. I have found the white lunch bags work the best. I put a palmfull of the popcorn and microwave it on high for a minute and a half or a tad more. I do use butter, unsalted on it with a seasoning like old bay. Might be trying the parmesan tip soon.

I am a PInterest kind of girl and saw this about popcorn on a site. Instead of putting it in a
brown bag just put it in a microwave glass dish, put abut 1/4 cup of popcorn kerrels in the bottom with a glass microwave plate and pop for 1 min 45 secs. awesome..

At home I eat the old fashioned popcorn method. At work, my client prefers Orville Reddenbacher's 94% Fat Free Microwave Popcorn. Either one is fine. Mederation is key no matter the fat count.

When you use spray butter are you talking about the type like Pam butter flavored spray or the type like I Can't Believe Its Not Butter spray? Also how do you keep it from being soggy?
I haven't graduated from microwave popcorn yet but I'd like to. emoticon

I saw this online and thought I would share.Its by the presto brand and they have 3 other popcorn poppers besides this one I believe. Its an popcorn popper thats used in the microwave to make popcorn with or without oil. There is something called a concentrator in the device that is used to help pop the corn and needs to replaced every so often so that the popcorn pops. It mighht be good if you like using the microwave or have limited counter space. Seems to be a thing with air poppers for me and my family in general.

Just thought I would add a tip there is a company out there that makes a powder topping(well many of them do but this one is the best that I have found) kernal seasons as they have the butter and cheddar and even my fave cajun OMG sooo good! I use the spray butter to get it to stick to the popcorn as that is very low points when use in mass quantities! I invested in a air popcorn machine...it was $19.99 at Walmart. Air popped popcorn contains about 31 calories per cup.....it has protein, minerals and vitamins… which are good for you. I sprinkle it with a little cinnamon or chili powder, no salt, no butter to keep away the bad fats. Sometimes a small amount of parm or romano, but small because of the sodium in the cheese.

I stay away from any other kind. I forgot how good real popcorn tastes.

In an effort to learn to make my own kettle corn, and because I didn't have a microwave strong enough to pop popcorn, I learned to pop on the stove and inadvertently learned how to make CARAMEL corn.

So now, not only is microwave popcorn dead to me, I am addicted to caramel corn. I even figured out the recipe exactly so that I don't burn it every time (my pots are all scarred from the learning experience, though). 1 Tablespoon butter + 3 tablesponns (~30g) popcorn, and 1 tablespoon sugar (+ salt) appears to be the perfect ratio in my hands.

Now that I have a NEW microwave, I will try popping my own in a paper bag for natural popcorn.

I'll have to try the glass bowl thing. I hate all the unused kernels. Sometimes I put the bag back in after I eat what has popped. Still so happy to be free of the mass produced overpriced microwave popcorn full of crap!

I tried the paper bag and later replaced it with a big glass bowl and a lid of some kind. The glass bowl cooks up almost all the kernels while the paper bag leaves too many kernels behind and it does not seem to burn as quickly if left on too long. It does take an extra minute or so to pop--probably due to heating up the bowl. However, the bowl gets really hot so I dump the popped corn into another bowl right away. Plus, I am not throwing anything away. BTW, if you use the paper bag it is conveniently portable and can be used 2 or more times if you save the bag.

Our dogs,birds,wild birds and chickens love popcorn and when we have any left we share. There are so many unpopped kernals I tried repopping them for the critters. Well there must be a secret to it cuz I made a burnt stinky mess and they didn't pop much at all and just turned black in the pan! Not as bad as burning microwave pop corn, did that once when I worked at a mall and the awful smell didn't go over well in our jewelry store and the stores next door. In my defense I've never been a microwave popcorn person!

I like it old fashioned, popped in a pan with oil. Now days we pop it in coconut oil and a wee bit of butter, then we don't add any more butter just salt. It's so good and I'm a girl that love buttery popcorn. We have an air popper but I've got to use way too much butter to make it tasty enough for me:-)

I've just taken a small brown paper lunch bag & folded the end shut. The popcorn never came out. For seasoning I put parmesan cheese (Kraft / 2 Tsp's). It's excellent!!

Alton Brown has a recipe for paper bag popcorn. I don't even mess with the olive oil, but it would probably help the seasoning stay on. You can use 2 staples to keep the popcorn from escaping the bag (don't worry, the metal won't catch fire - if you look some tea bags have staples on them too and people microwave those all the time).

Yes i just track it as air popped. thanks for the tips on seasoned , I used some paremson cheese and a little garlic last night when making mine, my kernels didnt pop all the way but just put them back in the bag to finish them out..

I put several tablespoons of popcorn in a big glass or ceramic mixing bowl, put a dinner plate on top of it (for the lid) and pop it that way. Sometimes I'll put half a tablespoon of real butter or coconut oil in with the kernels, sometimes I don't. Really depends on if I need to add healthy fats that day :) Popcorn is MUCH harder to burn this way!

I always make my popcorn this way. It is so easy! I use about 1/4 cup of kernels in a brown paper lunch bag, fold over the top and a bit of tape. I like mine plain. Filling and full of fiber.

Ok ... since we are on the Popcorn subject lol I ADMIT, dang it. I had two bags of popcorn yesterday. Sprinkled on it some Carmel Seasoning that you find at Movie Stores lol. ITs SOOO addicting. I know all that butter is bad, but isn't corn good? So it like evens out??? Or should I just keep wishing? lol MMMMM popcorn

Last weekend I decided to make a bag of microwave popcorn, It almost caught on fire in the microwave. I had to throw it outside for the birds. My whole kitchen was filled with smoke..
As I got on site in the evening to track my food I watched a video and on it they showed how to make your own popcorn, with kernals and a brown paper bag.. WOW , I just made some and its GREAT. You can add your own spices to it to.. Microwave popcorn is gone to me now.. I will always make my popcorn this way. Thanks for the tip !! emoticon
