I really don't think there is an ideal weight for anyone. You have to find that happy and HEALTHY medium. I am 5 feet and weigh around 115. I have lost 13 pounds over the past year I am happy with where I am at right now. I still have a tummy that I would love to get rid of. I really don't have a number on the scale I would like to be at andI rarely weigh myself. I know when I need to watch what I am eating by the way my clothes feel. However you need to decide what weight makes you feel comfortable.

Hi, I am glad you are going to address this with your therapist. I have had compulsive thoughts and behaviors in the past, and they can be both time-consuming and exhausting. If you suspect you struggle with this, in my opinion, the sooner you get help the better.
I just wanted to chime in on your request. I am petite, just half an inch over 5 feet, and I have been considered both severly underweight and obese by bmi standards in my life. (Lets face it, the bmi formula gives petite persons a very narrow window to navigate in, so it is easy to fall slightly outside the normal range on both ends of it without it indicating poor health.)
What my ideal weight is? I don't think there is a set ideal weight for each height. But mine was certainly not my lowest or my highest weight. I was not healthy at either. I will still argue I was much healthier at 29 years old with bmi of 32.5 than I was at 19 years old with a bmi of 16.5.
I now have a bmi of 26.2 and here on SP I aim for a bmi of 24. But in all honesty, in reality I don't aim for a number on the scale (I don't even own a scale) or a set bmi number, but for increased health, strength and balance/flexibility. I may not loose _any_ weight and still achieve this. I have been fairly stable around my current weight for 2 years now, and I can honestly say my eating and exercise habits have never been healthier. But what is more important to me is that I, for the most part, have a mindful and relaxed attitude towards eating and exercising now. I wish that for you also! It is very liberating.

Don't go by charts....every person is different whether petite or not. It is how your clothes fit and a lot of docs use the waist hip ratio.

I actually have a psychologist apt in a few days. I deal with depression/anxiety, and I take medication prescribed by a psyh doc, but I wanted to TALK to someone in a more in depth way. I hope attending this appointment will help me work through some issues, or at least get started.
I never considered I had a problem with my health regime until recently. But as other have pointed out, I did post a blog about "obsessing" over "getting healthy" a while back, and I've only increased my exercise and lost weight since then.
I posted this thread because I wanted to hear from other petite women who struggle with figuring out their ideal weight. I gained a lot more insight than just that.

I'm a licensed therapist and I'm concerned about your blog excerpt just posted by Kris. I agree with her 100%: you should talk to someone, both about your "ideal weight" (a doctor or nutritionist) since that's a concern of yours and a professional counselor re: your mindset. Sounds like your mom may have a right to be concerned. Listen to her as she probably loves you more than anyone! Best of luck. xx

After reading your blog dated April 23, 2013, I think there is a lot more to this than meets the eye. You have already identified 'obsessiveness' and I think that it is a very thin line between general obsessiveness and one that impacts on our health. Yours seems to be tipping you into the latter.
Here is an excerpt from that blog: "But mentally, I'm consumed. I need to exercise again. I need to do more squats. I need to get more cardio. I need to eat less for dinner. I need to stop using salad dressing. I need to read more and more and more and more about “health” online. The best diets. The most effective workouts. What's my BMR again? How many calories are in carrots? I need to weigh myself just one more time... "
I KNOW that was a couple months ago, but....! I can also understand why your mother is concerned - it isn't just the weight per se, but the effect on your mind. Perhaps you need to consider if you have a disordered way of thinking re weight/body-size etc.Body Dysmorphia could be a problem, too. Perhaps you NEED to talk to your Dr and be properly assessed, and if need be, referred to a Therapist;!

I am only 5 foot tall and I have a hard time with the BMI chart. I think that it is very old school and not very realistic to the way we live our life's these days. When I was at my smallest size which was a size 6 and I was 132 pounds. Back in the day that seemed very odd for my height but I had a lot of lean muscle and was very active. Now that so many woman lift and carry muscle the scale means nothing. And it should not. You should go by when you feel and are healthy. I feel my best and look my best around 130 to 140 pounds. I did get down to 118 pounds for a very short time when I was 18 or 19 years old and my parents freaked out. I look like a druggie and felt horrid as well.

I would be inclined to take Mom's advice to heart. She most likely doesn't have a hidden agenda, she's concerned about your best interests and (being Mom) is in a position to give you frank and honest feedback.
I would agree that you have good reason to be concerned that you may be "going overboard." You looked very fit and thin and healthy in the fairy picture. As your weight drops, "fit and thin" can quickly give way to "gaunt" which is I'm sure not what you're going for. Perhaps you can find a happy medium between those two shots?

No, in the fairy shot I was about 15 pounds more. I added the new one to see the difference. It has been quite a while since I updated my pics..that fairy and face pic were in... last November.
I have since started exercising and eating healthy. I am a little bit obsessive, I know this, and after my Moms aid something I was worried maybe I was going overboard. I weighed myself this morning and it said 90.5. (3 pound variance in a day? Or the difference morning and evening weighings?? lol)
I'll be very frank; looking at your profile picture, if I were your mom, I would be on you, too. You look too thin to be healthy. It could just be that particular shot, though. The one where you're in the fairy costume looks fine. Were you the same weight then?

I added a quick (and kinda bad :P) pic of myself. The other pics in my profile were when I was a bit heavier, 15 lbs or so.
I'll look into getting a skin fold test. I had a bone density test a few years back. I actually grew up with a phosphorous deficiency and took plenty of pills and supplements since my body wouldn't process it correctly, so getting scans and what not were pretty typical fare. Despite my deficiency my bones are in good shape.

I am 5' 2" and I think my range according to BMI is 105 to 140. Honestly, at my lowest in recent history, I was 132 and quite happy with that. I was in great shape and had a lot of lean muscle and could run races in respectable times. And I think people look healthier with a little meat on their bones.

Don't base your goal weight on your BMI or "ideal" weight. It's all just estimates and generalities and may not apply to every person. There are far more factors involved, particularly body fat %, bone mass, frame size, etc. So don't get hung up on your "ideal" weight. In fact, if you're in your healthy BMI range (slightly above or below) you shouldn't even be caught up on scale weight. What will make a difference in how you look is the amount of lean muscle you have (body fat %).
I concentrated on building lean muscle while losing fat when I got closer to my healthy BMI. My goal weight was 105 lbs at 5'2 because according to most calculators this was my "ideal weight". I reached 107 lbs and looked sickly, skinny but I still had a pot belly. People were telling me not to lose any more weight, that I need to gain weight (including my doctor who thought I should weigh 115 lbs). I lost fat from areas I'd rather have not lost it (if you can believe that but I completely lost my curves and girlish figure).
So I began gaining weight and strength training heavily. It took a lot of getting over my inhibitions over gaining back weight I worked so hard to lose. Like many women, I was hung up on a number on the scale. That magic number I believed was the perfect fit for me and I felt good about myself at. I gained 13 lbs over the last 3-4 months. I reached 120 lbs at 5'2 and I'll be honest here, I've always felt a little plump at that weight (and it would normally put me in a size 5/6). Not this time though, I look thinner than I did at 115 lbs (the first time I reached it). I still fit comfortably into my size 1-2 at 120 lbs and I own a pair of 5/6 shorts that are still a bit baggy on me. I gained some fat but it went to the *right* areas and I got my girlish figure back, I also gained extra muscle and my stomach is becoming flatter.
Now I'm just experimenting with more recomp to work on abdominal fat. I'm actually an inch smaller in my waist than I was at 120 lbs the first time and my hips are the same size so don't believe anyone who says you can't change your body shape. I used to be 35 25 35 before I had children and gained weight. When I lost weight my measurements were 35-28-35 the first time I was at 120 lbs, 33 26 33 at 107 lbs (very rectangular). With only a small amount of recomp work I am slowly getting back to my original figure and at 120 lbs now I am 34.5 27 35. At 120 lbs (the first time) and 107 lbs that gave me a 7 inch hip to waist to bust difference and now I have 7.5-8 inch difference. This first recomp. was just a short test too. Now that I know it works I have hope that after a few more cycles of bulk/cut I will regain my pre-pregnancy figure.

I would say you are on the cusp of underweight. IF your photo is indicative of how you are now, I would say you could do with 2-3 more lb going on, but your Dr and/or Dietitian would be a good place to start. I, too, would be inclined to get a bone density scan. I don't know about where you are but here they do it with the foot in water, and they do the rounds of Pharmacies a couple times a year. They don't cost much - about $30 - 40 here. Having a skin-fold test from a gym who has someone qualified to do it would be a great way of finding your body fat %.
Oh, and that thing about 100 pounds for the first 5 feet is from the early days of charging people different rates for health insurance. That number was put out by the insurance companies because almost everyone would be over it, so they could refuse discounts to anyone who was a normal size.
Yes, you are underweight. The healthy range for a woman who's 5'0" is 95 (for teens of Asian heritage) to 128.
Because you're underweight, if you have insurance it will probably cover a full-body bone scan because you're at high risk for osteoporosis. Those scans are just about the best way to know whether you have enough muscle and bone in proportion to body fat. It's very unlikely that you have enough muscle, so your doctor will probably want you to eat more, especially protein and calcium, and do resistance training. When you gain muscle weight, you don't look heavier; muscle is more compact than fat. I'm only a little more muscular than average, but that little bit means that when I get down to125 pounds, I wear a size 00 top or skirt and size 2 pants. If you gain weight through healthy eating and exercise, a lot of what you gain will also be blood, bone, and organs, which don't show at all. Don't be afraid to gain.

When you're petite, I've noticed the charts and bmi calculator and whatever else get a little wonky. I've heard so many things. For starters, it's 100 pounds for 5 feet, and 5 pounds under or over for each inch. For me, that would mean, I should ideally weigh between 90-95, since I'm 4'10 1/2.
I weigh 93 right now, and my Mom is getting onto me about being too thin. Some bmi calculators put me at underweight, while in others, I'm normal. How does it work for you? Anyone under 5 ft and have difficulty figuring out what the right weight is?
