I have a fitbit that I got when I was in Weight Watchers for $10. Otherwise I had a few different pedometers. I never forget to wear the fitbit but i always forgot to put on the pedometer.
If you have a smart phone you can use that too.

I have a pedometer and it helps me with my goal of 10000 steps per day I look at it several times a day because I would like to get 5000 steps before lunch.

This should help you understand them and how to find one. You can usually find them at places like sports stores (Academy or Bass Pro Shops, as examples) or even walmart. I got a nice one for just $50 at Walmart, though it has its quirks.

To be guaranteed the most accurate reading, you should get one with a chest strap, and it will need to allow you to enter age, gender, and weight.

Where do you buy a heart monitor at? Do you use it to make sure your heart is at a good level during your workouts? Sounds like a good device to me!! Better than the pedometer.

Do you find gadgets motivating?

You don't NEED a pedometer, but many people like them a lot, and find them very motivating. IF you're going for a 10,000 step a day goal, they're very important for tracking that.

I don't use them, but I did when I first got started. Now I have graduated to a heart rate monitor to track my workouts (although my watch gave out.) I think a pedometer is a great way yo get started motivating yourself to work out!

Most people who really like them wear them all the time to encourage themselves to move more, walk farther, and get more day-to-day movment.

Pedometers can be useful, especially for those who live sedentary lifestyles or aren't active during the day, then you can challenge yourself to take 10,000 steps per day. I have a cheap one I bought from Walmart but haven't used it in a few years. Personally, I think heart rate monitors are more useful gadgets.
