Good way to set the "steps" on your Pedometer. If you have snow then walk about 20 or 30 steps Measure from instep to instep. If no snow.... then water down the driveway or step in a puddle.. somehow get the bottom of your shoes wet walk those steps and measure the same way. .
Thanks for all the ideas, reviews and recommendations. I seems to have lagged a bit in my efforts to get the fitbit. As I was making plans to buy early this year, I saw FitBit Flex (new product) with the same amount as One but water resistant, although I can only pre-order right now, I think I will prefer it to any other distance tracker. Check FitBit site and see the Flex to know more about it and its advantage over other form of trackers.

I have Pedometers that I have used for years. They have worked great but I had to manually enter the results into SP. I was happy with them and used them regularly. A couple months ago, I bought the FitBit and I love it. It tracks automatically and updated SP for me. I also love the notices close to the end of day that tell me "Almost there, just 1,200 more steps to reach your goal!" It is great because it is just the added little boost needed to get over the mark.
So which would I recommend, I guess it is a personal choice, but the FitBit seems to be the winner for me. It also allows me to compete with a friend to see who gets the most steps in. Just one more little challenge. I think it was money well spent.
I bought a Fitbit, but I know for sure the mileage is not accurate and was off by a whole mile. I think it might because I walk AND jog. Not too sure. ??? I like that it does give me a rough idea of what I'm doing, but I may have been able to get that from something less expensive.

I had a pedometer...a cheap version that I LOVED...I wanted to know how far I was walking and how many steps....I used it faithfully and even wrote my "mileage" on the calendar everyday...it was fun to see it add up....BUT I got out of the habit and stopped doing it...I bought a Fitbit the other day and I CAN'T WAIT to get it!! It is on sale right now through spark for 59....I went on the website and it seems like a good tool....let us know what you decide!

I never had any problems at all. I set my Omron pedometers up properly to start with. You put it on with the step counter at zero, and then walk 20 steps, counting them yourself. IF the pedometer matches your count it is set properly, if there are too many steps or too few, then it will need adjusting. There should be a little plus or minus sign button on it. Continue adjusting until it comes up with the same count as you. You need to make sure that it is sitting in the right position on your waist band - generally 1/2 way between your navel and your side. Also, the waist band needs to be fairly firm.
IF it counts while you are in a car it is set far too sensitive, OR you are in a VERY hard-bouncing car going like the clappers.
Thank you for the replies, it is really helping my choice. I need to also know if you have any issues with any of these devices counting step even when you are in the car. I saw this shortcoming in most customer's reviews on Amazon. I will appreciate your sincerity.

I had my Pedometers for just that reason. Initially it was to check to confirm that I was doing the steps in a day that I thought I was. Then it became a challenge. Each day I would try to do more than the previous day's steps. It really worked. Two of mine were Omron's and they are really good. The last one did the step count, it had a timer and step counter for brisk walks. You had to walk at a certain speed and for a certain length of time for it to actually register, and I found that even more motivation to walk.
I have both a Polar Heart Rate monitor and the Fitbit. I use the heart rate monitor to track all my cardio exercise, time spent, maximum heart rate and total calories expended.
I use the Fitbit to count steps. What I love about my version is that it clips anywhere (mine is clipped to my bra) and also tracks how long I sleep. Another benefit is that it will automatically sync with SparkPeople once it is set up. There is a newer version of the Fitbit that just came out, which is less expensive than mine was and it may not track sleep. But it is a lot of fun to use and you don't even have to tell it your stride length. It is programmed to figure it out. All you have to do is sync it to SparkPeople and you are good to go.
Based on your goal, I would just go with a pedometer since it is the least expensive option. The ones by Omron have been determined the most efficient. When I got more serious, I got a heart rate monitor. Polar has proven to be very good and durable. Be sure to get one that tracks continuous, not the kind you use your fingertips periodically. I use it in a lot of ways. Since I'm pretty fit, I've found any kind of equipment monitors or estimates are wildly inaccurate for me and if I based my eating on that, I would be gaining major weight. I also use it to monitor my adaptations to training, but that's too much to get into here.
I would get the pedometer, see how you stick with it and if it works for you and move on from there. Have faith in your journey.
If that's the case, you don't need a HRM if your main intention is track your steps. I think you would like a Fitbit because it will track your steps over time and has online support with charts and stuff. I think I saw it is going to be on sale for Black Friday on amazon.com.

What are your goals ? Your specific goals will determine what you want to buy. If you want to track how many steps you walk per day, a decent pedometer will run you around $20. An HRM and fitbit are both pricey. Neither will specifically help you lose weight. Both are tools you could use that "might" help you to lose.
The question is this, which are you mostly likely to use and keep using ? Are you the type of person who buys on impulse ? If so, don't buy anything today. Wait and research what it is you want to buy. Otherwise, whatever you buy will end up as an expensive paper weight.
So, what are your specific goals ? What your goals are will tell you which item you buy. Because we're all different. I do own an HRM, but I didn't buy it to help me lose weight. I bought it to help me improve my athleticism. a good HRM will run you at least $70+. the fitbit on sale at amazon is also around $70+.
A person really must be careful making a decision like this because finances are tight for many people. Think and research before you buy.

I can't speak from experience - have only used a HRM when a Physiotherapist needed it for an assessment; the Pedometer I used and loved - don't know diddly-squat about the FitBit.
