There are actually three types of polyunsaturated fatty acids that are collectively referred to as omega-3s. ALA (alpha-linolenic acid) is found in plant sources, while DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) are found in fish and shellfish. Fish and Fish Oil are both very good sources of Omega-3, and the body uses it more easily in that form than from Flax Seed etc.
In my unqualified opinion, IF your cholesterol levels are fine, I wouldn't worry too much about it and just continue with what you are doing already. If you have a cholesterol problem, you may find that in time, as your weight reduces further (I noticed you have lost a lot already:-) you may find that your cholesterol improves. You might also benefit from a referral to a Registered Dietitian, taking some printouts from your SP Nutrition Tracker, for more qualified input.
Another thing I will comment on is that if you have any health conditions and/or are on any medications, don't take ANY supplements until you have been given the clear to by your Doctor. Sometimes the supplements, including Omega-3 Fish Oil and Flax Seed Oil, can interact with meds and potentially be dangerous.
I always had really high cholesterol (all lipids except a very low HDL) even tho' I was on meds for it and eating a very healthy diet, so my Dietitian prescribed Omega-3 Fish Oil. It helped, but it wasn't until I had lost a lot of weight that my cholesterol became normal - apart from a slightly too low HDL.
Flax is a good source of Omega-3s. Your body can convert Omega-3s into DHA, which is thought to do a lot of great things. If you consume fish, you can be eating DHA directly, which some people think is better. I don't think that's actually been proven, and your body is perfectly capable of converting Omega-3s into DHA... so if you can't eat fish, don't sweat it! Just keep eating your flax, walnuts, and canola oil!
I take flaxseed oil and eat nuts as a small snack in the evening for Omega 3's. I was told by my workout partner I have take fish oil or eat fish for best results-problem is I am sensitive to seafood so fish oil and krill is not for me due to stomach upset after a few days. Is there really a difference?
