I totally agree that you should take things GRADUALLY after not having exercise for a while.
But moderate exercise can actually help - the increased blood flow to the muscles helps the recovery process. Perhaps try 15 minutes at a very gentle pace.

In my opinion, I think you definitely need to take a break. The general rule of thumb I follow is to take a rest day every fourth day. So pick any exercise you like whether it is the elliptical, walks outside, DVDs, or whatever, and exercise for no more than three days in a row. You may want to start with every other day, increase to two days in a row, and then three. I'm not a fitness expert but I really think you should take a rest day. When you exercise, the soreness is from your muscles (gently) being ripped and torn down. The reason you rest is so your body can repair the little tears which makes the muscles stronger. If you don't rest then your body doesn't recover and suddenly your routine soreness turns into a much bigger problem.
Wow, my first time on an elliptical I could only do 3 minutes! I quickly built up, but it took me all week to get to 10 mins, and if I don't do it a week or so I'm back to 10 minutes. Maybe it's just me, but 45 mins is a lot!
Oh, I did sort of work up to it. I started with WATP dvd's and worked up on those. I just got a little bored with them, so thought I would try my elliptical. It went really well, until yesterday when I started to get sore.
Just not sure now what to do. Take a break or fight thru it?

you shouldn't exercise 6 days a week if you haven't done so in 3 years! that is a fast trip to burn out city. I would take short 10-20 min walks every other day to start and GRADUALLY work up to 4-5 days a week with strength training as well.
Doing more is not better..setting yourself on the path to be consistent for the long run is better.
The first day back on my elliptical after 3 yrs was on Wed. I started out doing 30 mins, but it felt so good and fun, I added another 15 mins to my clock. Now yesterday, I was sore, but still got on for 30 mins. Today my calves are still really sore, the rest of my body doesn't hurt, but can tell I am waking the muscles up. Yes, I am stretching and drinking water. I can barely walk up and down the stairs due to the soreness.
My question is...do I work thru this pain or should I skip today? I have been exercising 6 days a week.
