I wish I could swim... I love the water, but have never learned to swim, so it isn't really an option for fitness. My 8 year old has become my walking buddy. He is beginning to show signs of a weight problem, so I am glad to get him out there with me!

Good for you! Maybe a more expensive bike can be a reward when you reach some particular goal weight.
Walking IS boring unless there is something going on in the background. I have to have fast, engaging music while I walk or I get bored to death. I swear my iPod was probably the best fitness investment that I have ever made. Could you go on hikes in scenic places, rather than just walking in familiar places? That might increase the interest level too.
Have you tried swimming? That was what worked the best for me my highest weight. I was also 300 pounds, though I am much taller than you are.

Thank you everyone--I don't think I chose the right bike, though. Going to return this one and try another one to see how it goes. I'm not going to give up. In the meantime, my 8 year old has been walking with me in the evenings.
Also don't forget to look for good used bikes, try eBay. Used ones are fine if they have been card for. Bikes don't hold their value that great so you can find some deals. Online check Nashbar and Performance Bikes for some good prices.
I have a Raleigh & my fiance has a Diamondback. Both are solid, well made bikes. When we decided to start biking we went to Dick's Sporting Goods (they have a bike department & also work on the bikes). We got a great deal on our bikes because they were models from last season. I highly reccommend going that route to see what options are available & what size wheels & frames will be best for you. Even if you don't buy from there, they will give you a lot of good information to help you find a bike that meets your needs on craigslist, ebay, etc.
One thing I would HIGHLY recommend purchasing would be a cycling computer. You can get a pretty basic, cheap one for about $15 at Walmart. It monitors your time and distance, and also speed. I found when I started biking that I would look at the miles I biked, and be like "oh, maybe I can go just ONE more mile...and one turned into 2, 3, 4, etc. Just a thought :)
Well, I DID IT! I bought my bike today and went for my first ride in more than 20 years. I rode about a mile and a half and thought I was going to die! It was a cheapish Walmart bike, but I had a cycling friend look it over to make sure it was assembled correctly and help with adjustments. If I stick with it long term, I'm sure I will upgrade in the future! Thanks for the support and advice.

I'm a bike addict! I am also licensed by the League of American Bicyclists to teach bicycle safety classes.
I hope you can get a bike. Buying a used bike from Craigslist can be tricky if you don't know what to look for. It also can give you a great bargain. So, if you have a local college stop by the sports department and ask if someone can help you when you shop on Craigslist. Either a student or professor who has some knowledge of cycling.
Stay away for the big box stores. They are great for many things but not for buying bikes. The bikes there have not been put together by bike mechanics so there's good chance they are not put together properly.
I would recommend you look into a hybrid. Mountain bikes can be very heavy because of the hydraulics. They also have those nubby tiers that are made to ride on dirt. A hybrid will have tires made to ride on pavement. Who wants to be riding around on a bike that has features that you don't need?
Get on YouTube to get more information about cycling. There are loads of videos that will teach you had to fit your bike or how to change a flat tire.
Go for it! I LOVE riding my bike.

I started biking at around 300 lbs as well and what I've found is that it works for a while, but the bikes break down faster - I've gone through a bike each season :( As my legs got stronger I could bike longer, but the seats have been very uncomfortable so I'd suggest a wide seat as an extra purchase... I've looked into bikes that are made for over a 250 lb weight limit and they are quite spendy. I also have a stationary recumbent bike inside that I use and have had for 3 years with lots of life left in it - so that would be my suggestion. I put it in front of the tv so I don't get bored since it's not outside :) Whatever you decide is a step in the right direction! You can do it!

also scour the bargain sheets or Craigslist - a lot of the time people are selling bikes for super cheap. A good friend of mine picked up an $800 Cannondale bike for $100 because the people were moving abroad and couldn't take it along.

Might I add that whatever you do, do not give up on this. Even if you have to save and wait a bit for the bike you need, you can find a way. In the meantime, you can do something else.
I love both Trek and Specialized. Both are well-known for being solid bikes. I bought a new Trek hybrid a year ago and if I remember correctly, the low end was about $400. The manufacturer website should be able to give you guidance about what kind of weight the bike can handle. If it's not on a website, you should be able to either call a 1-800 number or send an e-mail with that specific question.
You're doing a good thing here ... don't let any of this get you down! You WILL not be stopped!!!!!

Just remember that you don't have to start there; a good place to start is actually walking! While I absolutely advocate biking (low impact, versatile, and fun!) if it winds up being prohibitively expensive, you can get the daily exercise you need from walking until you're in a better place physically and financially.
i would also think quality of a frame im 24st 12lb but id never buy the cheapest £90 bike well i did once and the frame broke not a pleasant experience. brought a 2nd diamond back with standard wheels i have fair confidence going up and down curbs/rough ground with it. so maybe ebay is a place to look? a mountain bike should be better overall even if your staying on roads
Thanks for your input. We don't have a bike shop locally, so I'm stuck with the retail stores or online ordering. Unfortunately, at this point, I'm on a pretty tight budget, so I'm hoping to find something relatively inexpensive that will still hold up. I've done a ton of reading about obesity/bikes, and some people swear that any bike will hold a 300 pound person as long as you have at least 32 spokes and monitor your tire pressure closely. Others say you must spend at least $500 on a bike. I'm so scared and overwhelmed that I still haven't bought anything. This is not the way I envisioned beginning my road to fitness. I'm getting a decent grip on my diet, but the exercise thing is not going so well.
i dont know what brands you have but if you can avoid the cheapest one's then you should be ok. go to a proper bike shop as they will be able to advise you on best bike for your height

I am a fan of Trek.
I think a mountain bike would be a good place to start. Visit a local bike shop and talk with them about it. They will be more than happy to help you get fitted properly for the best bike to suit your needs.
I think biking is a great place to start! That was and is one of my major forms of exercise. It is true what they say... once you learn to ride, you never forget! Good luck!
I am an obese woman--nearly 300lbs and 5'6". I am determined to get healthy, and I know I need to get moving to do that. I have tried walking and I just don't really enjoy it--I get bored, so I stop doing it. I used to enjoy biking in my younger days and I think I would like to get a bike and start biking again. Does anyone have suggestions for a good, sturdy bike for someone my size that won't break the bank??
