Another one adding to the "I don't eat until after my early morning workout". I DO think everyone's bodies are different as are their biorhythms. I do my BEST workouts on an empty stomach and as early in the a.m. as possible.

I don't eat until after I workout and it is a very small meal, usually a cup of milk and a piece of fruit. I eat a substantial lunch around 11.
Like others have said, its personal preference. I get up at 4:30 am have a cup of coffee and 1/2 a banana and am running by 5:30. I've tried lots of different options and that's the one that works for me.

As others have said, it's a personal preference thing. I also get up early to work out (in my case, run)--anywhere from 4:15am to 6:30. I can't stand to run within an hour of eating, and I'm certainly not getting up an hour earlier to eat before I go. I've run as far as 12.6 miles without eating beforehand (though I do take in a 100-calorie Gu gel about 8 miles in for my longer runs). I usually eat breakfast within an hour or so of getting back, though not right away, because I shower first.
Eating before a workout is largely a matter of personal preference. Some people (especially early morning exercisers) feel they don't have enough energy if they don't eat at least something before they work out. Others feel nauseous if they do. So try it both ways and see if you fall strongly in either camp.
And even if you do eat beforehand, it doesn't need to be a full meal - some people just have a glass of juice before a workout.
Eating beforehand probably becomes more significant for very intense workouts.

I always workout between 5 and 6am and never eat beforehand. It hasn't prevented me from losing weight though but i do try to eat something within the first hour and half of working out.

I don't eat until noon to 3pm and workout between 8am-10am. I don't perform well after eating; suffer runner's stitches, lack energy. I eat the majority of my calories in the evening and haven't suffered any negative effects.
"Toning" is marketing muscles to women who are afraid if they pick up a barbell, they'll leave the gym looking like She-Hulk. It doesn't happen, what does happen is you get results. Lifting Barbie weights does nothing but waste time.

Everyone is different, so you need to experiment with what will work best for you. Personally, I feel sick and lightheaded if I don't eat something small before a morning workout. Others find that they don't need to eat beforehand, and if they do, it actually makes them feel worse. There isn't a right or wrong answer :)

I'm sure the moderator can be of more help, plus I know there are articles about this on Spark, but some people are fine with not eating before exercising...if you do eat something, keep it light and easy to digest....there's a % ratio to follow with calories in vs. what you're expending-I think it's about 1/3 or 1/2 of what you think you'll burn...for example, if you burn around 400 calories, then your snack, about an hour beforehand, should be 200...I think it's similar for afterward, although I know you should have some protein afterward... Let you body tell you too....I know I need to eat a little something in the am. before any workoiut, but if it's just a walk, I can usually wait until afterward...have a good day!
So I have a question.. new to the whole exercising thing. I usually wake up at 5:15 to workout in the morning, I usually don't eat anything beforehand because for one, I'm not hungry and two I just want to get it over and done with. Is this bad for me? And if so what kinds of things should I eat before a workout and does it matter if I eat and go do cardio right away? Thanks!
