I look at the fact, this disease I have is "forever" It doesn't go away, it just goes into a dormant stage, when feeding the body the right nutrients to keep it at bay.
When they say, you change your eating habits, it's a lifetime change, not another fix and forget.
I am adapting to that, and the reason it is forever for me. Besides I crave nothing. I had found over the years, that food was changing in taste. I remember my Mom's and Grandma's cooking and how tasty it was. Today there is nothing out there that even resembles their cooking, because the food is no longer real.
I am not going to do the vegan/vegetarian but as close as I can get with occasional protein, I have no meat products 3 times a week and fish 2 times, and poultry 2 times.
The way I am eating must be working, I am already down 2 dress sizes. And the biggest
part of that, is I don't crave or want sugar. I started sugar when I was 3 years old, by crawling up the cabinets to get to the sugar bowl that my Mom put up high, to keep away from me. So as a former sugarholic, I am pretty much cured of that bad habit.
So forever works for me.

I do have occasional cravings, but the more WHOLE foods I eat, especially protein, fresh fruits and veggies, the less I have cravings for other stuff. I have found that if I have sugar, I crave more sugar. I'm still having a little "something" each day, though, and enjoying that. Dessert for dinner last night, for example was a cup of sliced strawberries, 2 TBS Lifeway farmers cheese (1.5 g fat) and 1/2 tsp sugar sprinkled over it. That was enough. Tonight, though, my son is coming home from college and I'm making him his favorite chocolate cake, so I'll have a 1/2 serving of that.

I agree with whoever said that forever is a long time!

I've cut out most processed foods, including all wheat (though I did eat a couple of my mom's homemade chocolate chip cookies last night). I am definitely feeling fewer cravings. After two months of eating this way, I'm finally beginning to be able to discern the difference between actual hunger and just wanting to eat.

What I'm noticing most is how good natural food is beginning to taste to me. I'm savoring strawberries and loving roast brussels sprouts and asparagus. The flavors of real food just seem so bright in comparison processed and pre-packaged foods. Even the cookies last night weren't as good as I had thought they'd be.

The only cravings Ive had so far have been for my homemade burrito bowls (which are made with brown rice, black beans, corn, homemade pico, and a little cheese so are healthy and I don't feel guilty indulging in) and my homemade cheese sauce which isn't as healthy but I generally eat it on broccoli so it really isn't that terrible either.

At this point, eating fast food does nothing but make me feel sick (anything fried is guaranteed stomach trouble) so I don't really have any desire or craving for it. :-)

I changed a lot of things, not quite to that extent, though. I no longer make a daily habit of things like muffins, ice cream and huge egg-and-hash-brown sandwiches. (In fact, I haven't eaten any of those things since December.) I don't particularly avoid processed foods as such, though (just sugary/salty stuff is very limited), and I eat plenty of rice and some white flour.

The most striking thing for me about how it's made me feel isn't a lack of cravings, really, even though it's been months since I've really had any that were more than that "I'm bored, where's the food" type of thing. I'm just continually amazed at how little food I can actually get by on -- and comfortably -- compared to what I was eating before. When I'm not exercising much, for instance (like now, grrr ankle), my 300 calorie-at-most breakfast gets me happily to lunchtime about half the time. That is just crazy to me. Before, I'd have been falling over hungry and shaking after an hour on such a small amount of food. (Note: I like a small breakfast. My other meals are not so small, and my snacks are often almost as big , when I have them.)

I have not cut out anything, entirely, and I still eat a lot of the diabetic no-nos regularly (I'm not diabetic, but probably pre-diabetic), but it seems that the way my body processes food has changed a lot regardless, just by cutting down drastically on the mass quantities of sugar and simple carbohydrates I was eating before.

I eat turkey burgers, and no bun, I use green leaf lettuce for my bun, and let me tell you, you actually enjoy the turkey, without the bun covering up it's flavor. I look forward to these because they are so flavorful.

I will say this.

I have cut out the procesed/refined/sugary foods. Not completely though. I just cut it out for a time, and then allow them every so often. I just really don't think that they need to be a daily part of my life. However, I don't mind having something once a week.

I still love certain foods, (burgers,e tc) I just rarely eat them from fast foods and such, because that is just so bad for you!

SUSAN The reason I even started eating like this, was because I was given the ugly diagnosis of diabetes. I ate poorly for most of my life, and this is what it got me. I am prepared to spend the rest of my life, healthy, and it won't be with food that is screwing up my health. Mainly processed and refined foods. I am willing to give it up for that reason alone.

I had a photographer friend in L.A. that did props for foods, he showed me what they did to make a hamburger look appealing for a commercial. I couldn't believe what he did to make it look good, actually 3/4 of it wasn't even edible. But when you do go for a burger, it looks nothing like that, usually flat runny and really disgusting. But then it's the real thing not a prop. I can't believe they get away with their commercials by dressing up the food. I agree with you there, it makes it easy not to want it, knowing these facts.

Nope, still eating everything, and enjoying it. My diet is primarily made up of the good for me things, but I refuse to make changes that I know I can't sustain. Forever is a long time.

Maybe part of it is because I'm friends with a food stylist and know *exactly* what they use to make food on TV and in printed ads look "good" but fast food and most junk food just utterly disgusts me now. Occasionally I'll want something carby but I satisfy that with either a small serving of really good ice cream or a handmade pastry.

How many of you, have changed your eating habits eating nothing but wholesome foods, fruits vegetables, grains, legumes some poultry, fish.
Given up processed or refined foods, red meat, sugars, white flours/rice. Pretty much anything junk food including sodas, chips all the really bad food.
Have found that you don't have cravings for that type of food anymore?
I have, and I am in my 7th week of eating the right food, and not having one craving. Even when commercials come on with all the dripping fatty type foods, I am no longer interested.
I would like to see how many of you have adopted this lifestyle, and have had no cravings.
Oh yeah, and I do drink my quota and more of water.
