I was never on anything like this site before either, and never even did Facebook. Now I am a team co-leader and on the SparkPeople Community Team which helps other new people find their way around and to get comfortable.
My first order of advice for you is to set up your SparkPage. IF you visit the link listed here, you will be taken through the Getting Started phase which will help you set up a SparkPage and introduce you to some of the wonderful features here on SparkPeople.com. Once you get your page set up, people can start welcoming you to their groups and post messages and give you "goodies".
This website is dedicated to helping people with issues with eating healty and exercising, as well as support forums for people like you. You can search for a team based on several different themes: age, expecting mother, amount you want to lose, favorite hobbies and interests, etc.
Once you get your page set up and ready how to set up and fitness tracker and nutrition tracker, there is a SparkPoints page. If you try to get all the SparkPoints possible, it will help you to navigate the site and you will need to interact with others.
I hope you enjoy this site and find it helpful. I joined 6/18/12 and have already lost 20 pounds. I am still learning to control some ice cream cravings, but I really haven't felt this good in more than 4 years!
