You mentioned having low metabolism, and the best way to speed it up is to eat! I also had very slow metabolism, and my doctor suggested eating every 3 hours. So I have breakfast at 7 (protein shake), a snack at 10 (usually and apple or some fruit) lunch at 1, snack at 4, dinner at 7. If I am up at 10, I have another snack. But the snacks are always fruit or yogurt or almonds. Use the food tracker and let it guide you! I have lost 40 pounds since April, so I promise it can work! I will be honest, I don't exercise too much... I just don't have the time. But weight loss is about creating calorie loss, so I stay at the low end of my calorie range if I know I can't work out.

I give all new members one piece of advice and it's this,"Don't look at good health or weight loss with an all or nothing attitude". If the only healthy thing you did for yourself today was drink 8 glasses of water, that's still a step in the right direction.
Don't try to do everything at once or you will end up frustated. Set some simple goals first. Example, if you're not eating 6-9 servings of fresh fruit and veggies, set a goal to eat 2-3 servings each day for one week. if you're not drinking 8 glasses of water, set a goal to eat 2-4 glasses each day for one week. if you're not exercising, don't try to do an hour a day, set a goal to take a 30 minute walk each day for one week. Once you've achieved these goals, then you set new ones.
When is the last time you had a full physical ? Because of your bad back, I would suggest getting a FULL physical done before you start doing any exercise. Because we don't know your medical history or the state of your back injury, we are not in a position to tell you what exercises you should and shouldn't do.
Pending doctor aproval, you could take a daily walk as long as your back doesn't give you any problems, but once again that is pending doctor approval.
When it comes to weight loss or weight gain, what matters most is what we eat. Good nutrition is what takes the weight off and keeps is off. You can't outrun a bad diet with exercise. If you want to take the weight off and keep it off, you have to eat right and watch your portions first.
also, there are many different opinions when it comes to eating foods that are supposed to rev your metabolism. Instead, concentrate on eating right first. Because honestly, there is NO miracle food or vitamin you can take that will help melt off the pounds. The fact is, you didn't gain the weight overnight, it's not coming off overnight. If it took you several years to gain the weight, it's not coming off in several weeks.
You must be patient with your body. there really are no quick fixes. Yes, there are vitamins that say they MIGHT help you lose weight. There are foods that MIGHT increase your metabolism. Don't let yourself get caught in the DIET trap. Instead, focus on trying your best to eat right. Because I can't emphasize enough the importance of a healthy diet.
So, my advice would be to call your doctor and get a full physical done. Talk to them about what exercises would and wouldn't be okay for your back. They might even refer you to a physical therapist. Also, the reason you need to go to your doctor is to find out things like your blood pressure, blood sugar as well as cholesterol. You need to know these numbers. If your diabetic, that's going to change how you eat.
I know many people are worried about going to the doctor, but it really is important that you go since you do have medical issues that need to be addressed.

Hi, Congratulations on taking the first step towards a better you! To answer your Q's; 1) exercise will actually do that for you. I've heard spicey foods do it, but I'm willing to bet a good bout of cardio will do far more for your metabolism than trying to find foods that could rev it up. 2) I like to do mine in the morning, since then no matter what crazyness happens in the day, I did my exercise (aaaand it wakes me up)... but that's just a preference. There's no magic time. I would caution you from doing it too late though, since you might get too pumped to sleep right after. 3) that depends on your body, how you feel and what you'll do. Start slow; doing too much too fast will most likely end in an injury or loss of motivation. Challenge yourself, but don't try to push beyond your limits. 4) I like doing it before, others like to grab a small snack before exercising. See what works for you. Don't eat anything major right before (especially cardio, which is what it sounds like you want), as it might make you nauseated. 5)cardio is what most people point to as the burning part of work, its also good for your heart. Weights are usually seen as the ones that build muscle... though remember, muscle is what burns the fat, so the bigger the muscles, the more calories they'll burn durning cardio. I would recommend a program that at least incorporates a bit of strength into the cardio.
If you want cardio at home, the simplest way is to start going on walks, etc. If you're looking for something more, get videos (library, SP, youtube, etc... don't shell out for beachbody workouts until you know what you like) since they point out many things you should be mindful of when learning to do this stuff.

ok I am new to this site, and new to diet and exercise. I have always been a big girl, but I have always had the " I don't care" attitude. Well that has changed. I'm married, and I have 4 children, I'm currently at 268lbs. I suffer from bi-polar depression, and ptsd.I also have a very bad back. My husband doesn't look or touch me anymore. I have decided that I'm tired of this, and I want to change! With that said. I can't afford a gym. So what exercises can I do here at home? MY BIGGEST questions. 1:What are some foods i can eat to get my metabolism going? Is there a vitamin I can get to get it going? I have a very low metabolism 2:. At what time of day is it best to exercise? 3: How long to spend exercising, 10,15,20 mins? 4: Do I exercise before or after I eat? 5: What type of exercises burns calories, I'm not concerned about building muscle right now, I'm more concerned about burning calories.
