I think abstaining from sugar alone would be a great place to start. Whether you're vegetarian, Paleo, Mediterranean, "Carb-lover," or whatever, we can all agree that nobody needs sugar or white flour, and just about everyone can benefit from more green veggies.
Start with the easy things-- don't eat things you know are junk food, and eat more of the familiar things you know are healthy. That's going to get you at least half way to where you want to be. If you think you'd like to follow the book, keep it around, and once a week or once a month, try one of those unfamiliar ingredients as your budget and your sense of adventure allow. Trying to change everything all at once doesn't work for most people, especially if it involves giving up foods that are familiar and replacing them with things that seem "weird" to you. If you try them one at a time, on the other hand, you'll probably end up liking most of them and accepting them as "new but normal."

I am reading the book, and so many of the ingredients and supplements are foreign to me. I imagine going to Whole Foods, wandering around for hours, and walking out with hundreds of dollars of things I will never know how to use.
Do you feel like this at all?
So I'm wondering if I can just aim toward 70/30 plants/protein with a few of the other guidelines around fat, abstaining from sugar and dairy, etc, and come out with the same result?
I would love weight loss, but am at a point where I would be more happy with pain relief. I have arthritis and have a lot more aches than I think I should have for a person of 51 years.
If you are talking about the book by Tana Amen---no, I have not read it but I did catch part of the PBS special and would like to read it. I'll have to check my library and see if it is available there. I think she had some recipes on her website...most sounded delish!
