I am encouraged and pleased that we will have a Jesuit at the helm. Jesuits are called God's marines and for good reason.

Interesting that he was the first runner up, if I can use that expression, when Pope Benedict was elected.

I am a little concerned about the use of the term "social justice". Here in the US, that is code for taking some justice from some and giving it to others. I personal prefer the term "equal justice" which was a basic philosophy of our founding fathers.

I do look forward to the next few years under Pope Francis. He has stated, BTW, that he chose that name because of St Francis of Assisi, my patron saint.

I think he is well liked and admired and I hope he can bring positive change. I want this to be the start of a better time for the Catholic Church. It's very confusing to the young people of today.

emoticon I too cried when he was announced. A statue of St. Francis of Assisi is in front of my house and he is one of my favorite saints! I see the pope is not one for the fame or glory. He is a simple man who is walking the walk. I highly respect that.

As a catholic, I am cautiously optimistic. My initial reaction was hopeful.

Hopefully he is named for Francis of Assisi and as they say, is looking to follow God's directive to St. Francis of Assisi to "rebuild My Church." The new pope sounds wonderful.

I am so surprised that they picked someone who is not from Europe. That is a big change.

I was struck by his humility. He asked for prayers from everyone which was such a sign. I am Catholic b/c I believe in the perfection of the Mass. The human aspects of the Church gets us all at times. I love that he chose the name Francis. It is a time of joy - I felt that peacefulness about him too Fenwaygirl.

There is a peacefulness about him, when he first came out I cried and I didn't feel this way about the last pope. We were all spoiled with Pope John Paul 2nd he was so loveable and this man just has a peace about him that brought me to tears and isn't it something how it was raining all day there and it stopped when it came to announce the new Pope.

The smoke is white and we now have a new Pope, Pope Francis from Argentina, God Bless! He's 76 yrs old, I don't know why they don't pick younger ones but they say he's a good man, God Bless him.
