Wow! What a crazy schedule, and what a challenge your situation presents! I congratulate you on your attitude, effort, and desire to work with your situation.

My only thoughts won't be enough, but maybe anything can help. Can you bring snacks with you from home such as snack raisins, cheese sticks, granola bars, and fresh fruit that might last the first 3-4 days? Can you carry an ice-cold lunch bag from home to eat your own food at least the first day? Can you bring your own home-baked muffins or something else to have the first couple of days?

Can you get unlimited bottles of water instead of tea, pop, soda, coffee, etc?

Are there exercises you can squeeze in while working such as calf stretches and raises when standing, or arm stretches when seated, or glute squeezes when seated? Can you get extra steps in during the day? Can you do standing and floor stretches during breaks?

I am curious to learn if any of these ideas are practical. They might not be.

my first selfish question would be to ask if they need any more employees, because I've been told I may lose my job.

OK, now that I've got that out of the way, I really wish I could help you.
You're in a tight situation, because you don't have full control over your food intake.

I guess my best advice is to make full use of your between days, when you do have control; and eat well then.

If there's at all anything you can take back with you that would help mitigate the impact of the "bag up" room choices; then I'd do so. Otherwise, I wish you the best with your wellness struggle.

Okay, so I'm trying to lose some weight again. Spark People helped me lose weight in the past (almost 40 lbs total), and I gained ALL of that weight back when I was pregnant with my daughter, and haven't lost a pound of it since (almost two years ago). I'm sick and tired of it and I want to lose it, but it's ten times harder this time around because of my current lifestyle.

I'm working in the Alberta oil sands. For 14 days at a time I live on a camp and work 12 hour shifts. I then have 14 days off, but really the rotation is more like 16 days on and 12 days off because the day before and the day after my rotation I spend pretty much the entire day on planes traveling back and forth across the country.

For the 14 days I'm on site, this is my basic schedule:

3:30 am - Wake up, get washed and dressed and gather up my stuff for the day
4:00 am - Have breakfast and gather my lunch for the day from the "bag up" room
4:30 am - Go outside to wait for the bus that brings us to work
4:45 am - Get on the bus
5:00 am - Bus leaves for site
5:30 am - Bus drops us off, we get dressed in our work clothes
6:00 am - Shift starts
**We get three 15 minute breaks during our 12-hour shift, just enough time to eat/have a coffee/whatever**
5:30 pm - Hop on the bus to go back to camp
6:00 pm - Arrive back at camp, immediately go to the dining hall for supper
6:30 pm - Head up to my room and get a shower and dress for bed
7:00 pm - Spend an hour working on my manuscript, something that is very important to me
8:00 pm - **Here I have a grand total of a half hour to myself**
8:30 pm - Go to bed

So as you can see, my first issue is time, as in I have none of it. I have about a half hour free time each night. I can't possibly get up any later, and I definitely can't stay up later at night because I'm already only getting 7 hours sleep and barely functioning through the day as it is.

My second problem is the food. All our food is provided on camp, so we only have so many options. For the lunch food we bring to work, we have the "bag-up" room. This is full of things like sandwiches, fruit and veggies, and desserts. There are healthy options, but not many of them, and there are only so many days in a row that you can eat raw carrots, yogurt cups, and bananas. I've been trying my best to eat the healthier stuff and avoid the calorie bombs, but most of the stuff in there is a calorie bomb. The only good stuff is the fruit and veggies and the plain, cooked chicken breasts, but the veggies are very basic (carrots, celery, iceberg lettuce, onions, tomatoes, pickles) and after a couple of straight days of chicken you start to feel queasy just looking at it. So of course I end up eating some of the crappy pre-made stuff...processed ham and cheese sandwiches, pre-cooked lazangna that's full of cheese, etc. The dining room where we have breakfast and supper is just as bad...it's all bacon, eggs, sausage, and so on for breakfast, and at supper it's tons of meat spiced with salt and MSG and fat-bombs like mashed potatoes and cheese soup.

And no, in case anyone was wondering, you can not request specially made meals. One of the girls I work with tried.

So basically, for 16 days out of every 28 I have no time to fit in any kind of exercise (at least not if I want to, you know...sit down for ten minutes of the day) and I have very few healthy food options that start to make me gag after only a few days.

I don't want to sound like I'm just being a whiny brat, but it's seriously very difficult to work around. I've been trying to lose weight for four months now and I haven't lost a single pound because I can't find the time to exercise and the food options just aren't various enough for me to eat WELL. Any suggestions or advice? Anything at all?
