I eat potato chips several times a week and I've lost 95 lbs doing just that. I bought small bowls and I weigh out one ounce, then I eat them slowly.

High five for resisting the chips!

Hubby usually has at least one snacky item hidden somewhere around the house and for whatever reason refuses to completely ditch the snacks...and I've always been a horrible snacker. What has been working for me is a combination of chugging a glass of water whenever I feel the urge to snack (just to make sure I'm truly hungry vs thirsty) and then asking myself which is more important: a few minutes of pleasure, or recapturing my health?

There has been chocolate frozen yogurt in my freezer for literally two months now that I've had zero urge to snack on, and I'm giving credit to my new mindset.

Something else you could do if you feel yourself starting to cave regarding the munchies has already been mentioned...measure out one portion and put the rest of the package away, and then savor that portion (and record it!) instead of just wolfing it down. It's better to eat one portion and move forward than eat through an entire bag and beat yourself up mentally later. Before I was able to fully resist snacking, this was my strategy of choice.

All that salt will add extra water weight pounds on the scale that will make you feel worse! I kind of look at things that I know I have no will power over and just talk myself out of it. If I cant do that and I had a bag of chips in the house, I would put them in the trunk of my car and give my keys to someone else~!

They are in the cabinet because my husband and stepson eat them regularly. I can not convince my husband not to have them in the house but am thinking of telling him he'd better hide them well because if I find them I will throw them away.
Anyway, thanks to all your help I did NOT eat a single chip.
Instead I had half a sweet potato and some roasted eggplant.
And I am so very happy that I did...

I'm the same way. I know myself too well. If it's something that's going to tempt me to distraction like that, I don't give myself easy access to it. I would love to be able to have the treats in my house and stay out of them, but it's not in my nature. One of my morning DJs was talking about having a Snicker's bar and taking one bite, then putting it in a baggie, then having little bites when she wanted it. My mother is like that. Not me.

If you can't resist, get it out of your cabinet. Doesn't mean you can't ever have it. It's a survival tactic.

Why do you have a bag of potato chips in the cabinet?

Anything that tempts me -- chocolate and ice cream are the biggies -- do not come through the door. If it's here, I'll eat it. Why drive myself crazy? I still indulge, but keeping them out of the house requires a trip outside and is usually an infrequently planned treat.

You don't need them. You want them. That's the first thing to recognize.

Here's a thought: think of the grease you get on your hands just when you pick them up. Now imagine how much of that grease goes on your insides?
That is enough for me to not ever want them.

They won't help you reach your goal.
They won't make you feel better.
In fact, they'll make you feel worse.

HOWEVER, if you really, really want potato chips so much that you're focusing on them and needing help to resist, then I'll tell you what I would do. If it were I, I would wait to have them, but I would definitely have them if that's what I really wanted. I always acknowledge a craving and then plan when I'll have it. Usually on Saturday. So say I'm craving ice cream. I actually plan my whole day on Saturday around the ice cream that i'm going to have. I work out, eat whatever else I've planned, and then I have my ice cream. Most importantly, I enjoy the ice cream without any guilt. It tastes much better that way, This way I can get the ice cream out of my head today because I know I'll have it on Saturday when I have room for it and when it's on MY terms.

I save those things for bedtime snack IF i have eaten well all day and have a few calories left to spare. If I ignore the craving, it gets worse and I eat more of it in the long run. You could try replacing them with Tostitos, salsa, might e a little healthier, or just through the chips out! or give them to the neighbors.

That reminds me that I actually HAVE a half a sweet potato in the fridge. I never ate them before the other day and they kind of remind me of candy. I managed to initially dodge the bullet by drinking a large glass of water and going for a walk around the block but it's going to come back. Sweet potato is a great idea and I think they have lots of potassium too (must check) which I am trying to focus on. Thanks!

...whatever the reasons were that you arrived here at SP, those are the reasons not to repeat old behavior.

As for the potato chips, you COULD have a planned, controlled portion. :) But if chips are your trigger (as Dove ice cream is mine!), then perhaps that's not the best answer.

How about cook up 1/2 of a sweet potato with some olive oil instead. (you'll get more nutrients. Is it the crunch--celery, carrots? Is it your hungry? How about some crunchy almonds or cashews. that can tide you over.

Move them up high out of sight. Put something nutritious in its place.

You are worth it. You deserve better than what's in that bag. emoticon emoticon emoticon
