I have a similar issue. I have been on low carb in the past and it worked great, I lost 90 pounds in 8 months. I gained 60 lbs back and i recently tried to go back on the diet again and it will not work. I find the diet to be a pain sometimes especially with my schedule and when cooking for my wife and kids nut I love the results it gave me the first time. I have considered giving up again but I would love to knock off 60 lbs again and then talking to a nutritionist on how to reintroduce carbs but it doesn't seem to want to work.....any suggestions?

The only thing "wrong" with you is that you don't weigh 300 pounds. A pound a week for a person who's less than 100 pounds overweight is perfectly normal. A pound a week for a 47-year-old woman who's less than 100 pounds overweight is pretty danged phenomenal!
Another thing that may be factoring in is the fact that you didn't weigh yourself during the 40 days, and it WAS 40 days rather than 28. Hormones affect water, which affects weight even though it's not related to fat. You're at almost exactly the opposite point in your hormonal cycle from where you were last time you weighed. As you get closer to menopause, the effects of hormones can get more dramatic. I'm only a little younger than you, and last month my weight shot up 7 pounds around the middle of the month.
Stay calm, keep an eye on your total calories, and weigh yourself on day 56 so you're not comparing apples to oranges. But even if you really did "only" lose 5 pounds in your first 5 weeks, you've lost 5 pounds. Five pounds is probably pretty close to 10% of what you need to lose. Ten percent in a bit over a month is perfectly reasonable-- fast enough to be making a significant improvement in your health, but slow enough that it's probably mostly fat rather than muscle.

Having lost 30 pounds low-carbing (and making a relatively recent mistake which I've corrected), and I'm 57 years old, I'm just curious about your basic before and after actual dietary intake. What sorts of things comprised your meals then, and what are you eating now? We can't blame (or promote) low carb until we have further info.
Otherwise it is just speculative fodder.

You may be doing too much exercise. Are you resting in between activities?
Our bodies have memories. If you have had to restart induction several times, your body may just be holding on this time. Every frequent dieter has experienced the effect of doing the same thing over too many times, and just can't lose the same way anymore.
I felt sluggish at first, but now I feel better than ever on low carb. My mood and energy are steady, unlike when I was on the standard high carb diet. I would swing high, then swing low. I have no intention of going back. I felt terrible on high carb/low fat. Always hungry - that was the worst. Now I have a lot of control over my appetite.
My sister talked me into a low carb diet (and low calorie too...about 1000 cals/day) a couple of years ago. I followed it faithfully (absolutely faithfully, my husband said that he'd never seen anyone so dedicated) for about 5.5 months. That entire time, there was not one single day that I ate off program. I lost some weight the first month, but then not another pound. I also felt lousy--I'd never felt worse in my life. I was always very tired--to the point where I'd simply fall asleep at every possible opportunity. I was also cranky and I craved carbs the entire time. I was absolutely miserable. I should have listened to my body telling me that I wasn't eating right. Finally, I just gave it up and then felt better. But, I went back to eating too many calories. I gained back the small amount of weight that I'd lost and then some. Last spring/early summer, I was back up to 256 lbs. I decided to try a low carb diet again (at my sister's urging). This time, though, I kept my calories to 1200-1500, so I wasn't eating too little. Once again, I lost some weight the first month and then the weight loss halted. I felt lousy again (absolutely felt horrible)...tired, cranky and craved carbs the entire time. This time, I listened to what my body was telling me . I decided to follow a healthy diet...one with an appropriate amount of carbs (the amount recommended by the experts--registered dietitians) and the appropriate amount of calories/fat/protein and fiber. I felt great and lost weight at an appropriate rate. I didn't have cravings. I wasn't tired. I've lost 78 lbs so far. I feel like this is an absolutely sustainable way of life.
My sister, who's still doing her low carb diet (she's been on it continuously since last summer) has basically lost only about 8 lbs. She keeps gaining and losing the same 5 pounds. She's also cranky to the point where she's really difficult to be around a lot of the time. Why does she keep gaining and losing the same 5 pounds? Well, I don't really know. I think that the 1000 calories isn't enough and that she's not eating enough, so she doesn't lose weight. Then, I think that she periodically gives in and binges on candy (carbs) and gains the 5 lbs back. I wish I could talk her into following a sensible diet, but she's convinced with the low carb/low calorie thing (even though it's obviously not working for her).
I guess that all I can say is that people are individuals, so low carb may work for some. But, I've never met anyone who's lost a significant amount of weight eating low carb and then manged to keep it off--everyone that I know who's lost weight eating low carb has gained it back). I just think that, for most, it's not a sustainable way of life and I think that you shouldn't do any "diet" that you can't do for life.
I'd be interested to know if your 5 lb weight loss was during the first couple of weeks of your diet? It's possible that you're experiencing the same thing that I did--an initial weight loss during the first few weeks (possibly due to loss of glycogen stores and not fat) and then nothing... You might want to give the Spark People plan a try...the low carb diet simply may not be for you.

I bet you are frustrated, especially given your past experiences with this diet. However, did the diet work long-term in the past? Are you trying to lose weight now that you had previously lost? 40 days is 6.5 weeks and is just under 1 lb a week. SP recommends 1-2 lbs lost per week. I agree with the others, are you doing low cal PLUS staying within your recommended calorie range? I also agree with others that talking to your doctor was a good idea and bodies DO change through the years.
Remember, muscle weighs more than fat. Have you tried taking your measurements and comparing them? Has the shape of your body changed? Do your muscles feel more toned? Do you feel better, have more energy?
If so, you are making more progress than that 5 pounds leads you to believe! Don't give up! I honestly never go by the scale anymore. It can be too discouraging and misleading.
Checking with your doctor is a great next step. Hormones can play a major role in weight loss/gain and especially that stubborn belly fat as can stress hormones (cortisol).
I am 35. In the past 10 years low carb worked like magic for me... I would loose, then go back to eating carbs, then gain, blah blah. Anyway point is... I CANT DO IT ANYMORE!!! I can be PERFECT atkins induction, and loose maybe 3-5 pounds and stop. It just does not seem to work for me now, I have changed. SO I am eating healthy, 1400 cal a day, lots of fresh veggies, lean meat and fruit and NOW I am loosing. You may have to realize that you need a different way of life, and that low carbs is no longer an option. I mean really who wants to live without all the carrots and potatoes, WW bread, apples oranges lol I could go on and on. Counting calories is a way of life I can handle, cutting out total food groups just doesnt work......
When I started Sparkpeople I was 49 and post menopausal. I only have averaged .5 (one-half) pound loss per week. It didn't matter if my deficit was on point for more or not. Our bodies are not machines and do not always react as expected. 5 pounds in 40 days is a great loss. I don't know how low carb you are going but it is possible to go TOO low. Following the guidelines set up by Sparkpeople works.

I believe that the people who designed the SP program know what they are doing, so I am sticking to their recommendation that I get 50% of my calories from carbs, 20% from protein and 30% from fats. It's working for me.
I'd agree that your rate of weight loss is reasonable. Of course, I always recommend following a style of eating that you can keep up with for the rest of your life (whether that's low-carb or something else). That way when you take the weight off, you can keep it off for good.

I don't think so. It takes time... more time as we are older.
My first six weeks... I lost one pound in the 6th week, nothing before that. Sounds like you are doing fine....

Thanks for the replies.
I know people SAY they are doing low carb, but they are really sneaking in "low carb bread" and "low carb brownies," etc., but I SWEAR that I have had not ONE piece of bread product of any kind at all in the last six weeks. Or sugar, for that matter.
Just saw my doctor, and he is sending me for fasting blood work tomorow: thyroid, hormone levels, blood sugar, the works.
I started six weeks ago at 198, and am down to only 193 after all of this hard work. At this high end of the scale, and based on past results with the same exact diet plan, I should have lost AT LEAST 15 pounds. It's not like I'm doing this with only 5-10 pounds to lose.
Either there is something VERY wrong with my body to have only lost a measly five pounds after SIX WEEKS of assiduous dieting and working out, or...and this is what I dread most...I will have to accept that I have played the "up and down the scale" game too many times with my body, and now I am just destined to be fat for the rest of my life.
Quite frankly, I don't want to even think about the latter...

You need to be careful with the low carb. I did fine for 6 months on 90 to110 Carbs., now I'm not to happy with it and have upped my daily intake of Carbs. Factors that can work on weight lose: If on medication, will it effect water weight. Depending on age, how your hormones effect weight ( or time on month if female). Placement of scale and time of day you weigh. Personally weigh once a week at the same time. I judge weight loss more by how clothes fit than stepping on that scale every time I pass it by. You may have reached a plateau and your body needs to catch up with what weight loss you currently have. Especially if you are low carbing. The key is don't give up, stick with it.
First off, losing 5 pounds in 40 days does not a failure make. That being said, the fact that you got on the scale on day and only saw a 5 pound loss could just be because you picked the wrong day to weigh in...like a day after a particularly high sodium day, or a day with some major hormone issues, or a hot, humid day that tends to cause water retention. You could actually be down as much as 10 pounds.
Bottom line - eat well, hit your calorie goals, work out and you will lose weight. And understand that, despite the fact that it sucks and is completely unfair, the older we get, the longer it takes to lose the weight. ALSO, the more times we try a particular diet, the less likely we are to get the same results as in times past. Not sure if it's psychological of physiological, but it is the way it is. Sucky, but true.

I am desperate for some help.
Exactly 45 days ago, I started a low-carb diet, following it strictly as I have done several times before over the past three years. I tried something new this time: not obsessively weighing myself, but concentrating more on the one-day-at-a-time mentality and checking off each day I faithfully stayed on the program on a sheet on my refrigerator. Also, I have been working out diligently 4-5 days a week--combo cardio/strength training/ab programs, kickboxing,and stationary bicycle.
So, on this past Sunday, after having following this regime for 40 days, I weighed myself and was beyond dismayed to that I have ONLY LOST 5 POUNDS!!
I am completely stunned. In the past, doing this EXACT SAME REGIME, I would have easily lost between 15 and 20 pounds by this time.
Also, I have noticed that the bloat in my lower abdominal area has not been going down at all, despite all that I have been doing. Clearly, it probably hasn't changed at all since I have barely lost any weight at all.
I am seeing my doctor today to get tested for a potential thyroid problem. Also, I'm thinking that I should see my OBGYN for a check on my hormones. (I am 47 and perhaps menopause is starting??)
Does anyone out there have any advice for me? Has anyone else gone through something similar?
I feel like my body is "broken," along with my heart. I have been following the diet still this week, but have not exercised at all...I feel like "why bother?"
