When it comes to exercise, it doesn't really matter what you do, just that you do it..
From this point of view, the 'best' exercise is the one that you enjoy the most, as this is the one you are most likely to keep doing regularly.
Some common starting points for exercise are:
* just going for a 10-20 minute walk around your neighborhood * doing an exercise video in the privacy of your own home. Many people have got a start with Walk Away The Pounds Videos, others find various dance videos to be 'fun' rather than a 'workout' * some people find the social aspect of a fitness class at the gym makes exercising more enjoyable * those with significant joint issues may find swimming, cycling (stationary or road) or the elliptical easier on their body.
Don't worry about trying to find the 'best' workout - just focus on finding something that you can do regularly - fun, convenient and not intimidating forms of exercise are probably the best pointers here.

For exercise, do something that you love to do. If you think of the treadmill, for example, as a chore - then don't do it! Do something that is fun and you will have a better chance of sticking with it. Maybe it's walking with your husband or dog or child... maybe it's swimming. Ideally exercise should be something that you look forward to!
I would recommend reading articles under the "Healthy Lifestyle" section of this site - search the titles and see what interests you. You will learn about nutrition, fitness, and motivation. The more educated you become about your health, the better chance you will have at being successful in this journey!
Zorbs is right, it is more about what goes into your mouth for weight loss. With that said, you need some exercise to help get you fit, you will feel better and minimize muscle loss while you are losing. If you belong to a gym or have the ability to I highly recommend it! If not and you need to work out at home- Leslie Sansone walk away the pounds videos were really great when I first got started.
Running and swimming are the most effective in terms of more calories burned in a shorter amount of time. However, it's more important to find a workout you Like as you're more likely to stick with it.

Hi Im new to this too.. I've read a lot and most things suggest some form of cardio 30 minutes to one hour per day most days of the week. I say find what you like to do then do it =)
I like doing dance type exercises I love love love to work out to Sweatin to the Oldies. Richard Simmons gets you going and its fun. I've found a few bellydance, and latin dance workouts too that I enjoy a lot. I think if you like the workout you're doing its easier to do it at least it is for me.=)
I follow Richard Simmons on facebook and he is so encouraging. =) One of the best things I've seen on his page is a reminder that no one starts off running a marathon they have to work up to it. That reminds me to be paitent with myself.
I think that a diet and exercise go hand in hand but thats just me =) good luck in reaching your goals

Losing weight is mostly proper nutrition. Exercise makes your body fit and healthy.
So to answer your question, no particular exercise or any exercise at all is necessary to lose weight.

This is a rather general question here, are you at a gym or just at home using your own body weight or what? Also since you are just starting out you might not be able to do some of the things that you see other people do.
At the gym, the elliptical machines are a low impact so it is easier on your joints. The treadmills are good also. But when I use to go to the gym a lot the machine that burned the most for me was the stair master. Just starting out I would focus on just working out on it for 30 minutes and being able to do the whole 30 minutes without resting, then you can bump up the resistance later. If you can get a heart rate monitor so you can keep your heart rate in the target range for the best workout.
If you are just trying to workout at home then I would focus on the basics like sit ups, push ups, squats, lunges, and anything else you can think of doing. Going for a jog is a good thing, I would say to do about an hour with as little walking as you can and then just increase your speed with less walking each day you do it. Finding the tallest building and climbing the stairs is another great workout.
What ever you do you have to like doing it or it will be harder to stick with the workouts. Good Luck
