when doctors say exercise, they usually mean cardio or weights. I'd suggest you speak with them as to the actual restrictions.
You mentioned you do get around, so maybe try to slowly walk more? Going to a park would be a good idea, as there are usually ample spots to sit and take a breather if your back starts acting up. You'd be surprised how much you get through walking, and since you sound ambulatory, that shouldn't be a problem as long as you don't force yourself when your back is acting up, etc.
Again, speak with your doctors as to what they actually want you to refrain from, and ask if there are any easy activities they would recommend to help you in your weight loss. They can also give you nutrition tips that will help increase your results.
Also, its far better to drop weight slowly and keep it off than focus on losing weight, only to yoyo back in a month or a year and have to start from scratch.

Just stepped on the scale, just to see, out of curiosity. I was ecstatic to see that in less than 3 days, I lost 0.6 pounds. So, I am headed in the right direction.

The good news is that you can lose weight without exercising. Weight loss is 80% nutrition and 20% exercise.

It's a wee device you wear all day that tracks your steps and then calculates your calories burned and overall activity level. Look at the ads here on sparkpeople - they are partnered with Fitbit so that you can sync your daily activity directly into your account.

Word to the wise though - if you get one, go through Amazon rather than Fitbit's website - Fitbit's customer service/order fulfillment leaves something to be desired.

Perhaps you could try getting a FitBit or similar device? Since it tracks all of your movement, you'd at least have a better measure of what you ARE able to do.

I have to lose enough weight through diet alone. Even then, they may or may not clear me for exercise. I was rear-ended, twice. Once in excess of 80 mph, the 2nd time in excess of 85 mph. & No, I wasn't on a racetrack. My 2nd wreck, the speed limit was only 30. I hate red lights. Still get paranoid every time I have to sit behind one. My back is shot.

Ask your doctors what you can do to get cleared to exercise. Till you get cleared, heed their advice and don't attempt any fitness routines.

I do my stretches, cuz that's all the doctors allow me to do, but there's no way to track stretches, or what little bit of housework I do. I break a sweat, but after a few minutes, I have to take a break. Then I go back to it, around an hour later. emoticon
