FYI, rowing is considered a cardio exercise, not a strength training exercise. This is the same as the elliptical on high resistance or treadmill inclines. Although you are working your muscles harder, the primary goal is moving large muscle groups rhythmically to elevate heart rate -- cardio.

I think it is a great warmup for doing a full-body strength routine.

I purchased a Concept 2 rower in August 2013 and have to say it is my favorite piece of equipment. I have a treadmill and a spin bike but find I get a better workout on the rower. I have gone from less then 1000 meters in a workout to 10000 meters. I do feel some muscles get used much more then others but my arms have really toned up quickly. My thighs and glutes and abdomen get a good workout also but you do have to pay attention to form. I focus on different muscles being worked switching up every few minutes and this seems to help me stay in form.

I just love the rowing machine at my gym! I have been using it now for about 3 weeks and it is really fun. AND now this great link shows that my muscles have been sore for a reason - it works just about every one of them!

Hey, thanks so much for that link!

It's really helpful for me, as I've recently re-joined my gym after working out at home for a while, specifically to have access to more equipment.

And although in the past I've always struggled with rowing, in recent months I've really taken to it and have noticed how much better I've become - I'm even enjoying it now!

I have progressed from rowing 1000 metres up to where I am now, which is 2500 metres. I do this in about 11 and a half minutes, with the machine set at the maximum resistance of 10.

It's interesting to read a detailed account of how your body works at each stage during the row.

I have enjoyed using the rowing machine and hope to get one for my home. Anyway, I was looking at the Concept2 Rowing Machine website and they talk about the muscles used in rowing. I thought it might be helpful for people that have never rowed and were looking for something new.
