Thanks, ShayLad2. It's been a long journey for me ... with a few false starts and set backs along the way. But I am "winning the battle" and am more fit now, at age 58, that I have been since college.

You also might want to try her DVD's with several separate 12-15 minute miles on them. You can do each mile separately. Each has a little warm-up ... then intensifies. You could do 1 mile ... then take a decent break ... and then do a 2nd mile that would start with a little warm-up period. That might be a better rythm for you now than the 30 minutes in one stretch.

I have started hiking once or twice a week and when going uphill for long stretches, I have to take frequent breaks. But each time I do it, I'm able to go further and take fewer and/or shorter breaks. I personally don't see a problem with that. I consider it my "interval training" lol.
while you are getting used to the longer length, you could maybe not do all the arm stuff, just work on more of the leg stuff. and each week you can add more and/or longer time of arm stuff. (or vice versa.....do the arm stuff but not the leg stuff)
and I so hear you about losing the beat. lol

Thanks for all the responses. I've been working out a couple of months, but only recently jumped from 15- to 30-minute workouts. That might just be my problem -- doing too much too soon, since it's twice as long. Normally if I try to slow down the workout I get thrown off the rhythm completely, but I'll consider maybe just sticking to her shorter videos instead.
Before considering concerns like asthma, I think I'll try to limit the intensity and see how it goes. Thanks for the help, guys.
When I first started exercising I also couldn't get through a 30 minute workout video easily, but rather than take a full break I would do some light movement so as to drop my heartrate a little bit, but not actually rest. For example if the video was doing something like jumping jacks and I just.couldn't.do it right then, I would march in place until my heart and lungs were back on the same page as me. Even now as my fitness has progressed, if I can't jog any longer I'll walk for a couple minutes, before resuming jogging.
Eventually you should be able to do the 30 minutes straight, but if you keep stopping to rest your body won't have the chance to get used to working that long.

Rather than taking such long breaks, can you just slow down your movements considerably? You know, if you're marching swiftly in place while swinging your arms, slow down your steps and reduce your arm movements until your heart rate is a little lower. Don't let it go all the way down to resting or you're not going to get the cardio benefits.
First, it shouldn't really have much of an effect on the calories burned, but you aren't getting a good cardio workout if you stop and slow down that much.
Maybe you should consider doing the 15 minute workout back to back? Maybe that would be easier for you.
If you are just in your late teens, I am surprised you get so winded during these workouts. Have you seen a doctor to check for athsma?

I would do an easier version of the moves to try to take less breaks. While taking breaks in itself isn't a problem, multiple breaks of several minutes says to me that you're working too hard.

So, I'm a big fan of Leslie Sansone's workouts. I've recently moved up from her 15-minute videos on to her 30+ ones, and so far, it doesn't seem like she schedules a break at any point during the videos. The demand from her videos has me pausing multiple times and taking several minutes just to catch my breath. I've got a few questions about this:
1. Does taking multiple breaks diminish the workout? Generally, I wait until my heartbeat is slightly above my RHR before unpausing.
2. Is it safe to go right back to the same intensity as when I stopped? Sansone continually ups the intensity of her workouts as she goes on, so resuming at the 5-minute mark is way different than resuming at 20 minutes. Should I follow along, or go slower and work my way back up?
3. Does taking breaks affect how many calories I burn? I know the general idea is that a 30-minute session is the same as 3 10-minute sessions, but I always thought that was because your heart rate stayed elevated the whole time. Does the same thing happen if I pause for 3 minutes and get right back into it, after my heart rate has decreased?
TL;DR, but I appreciate anybody reading this. For the record, I don't have any serious health problems and I'm not overweight, so my safety question is in more of a general sense.
