I remember when I was a kid, my shoes weren't worn out until there was a hole in the bottom the size of a quarter and my socks were sticking out of the sides of the shoes where they had torn away from the soles. . LOL
Just to reiterate what's been said, the part of the shoe that breaks down while running is typically INSIDE and not the tread. So running shoes aren't like tires that are quite apparent when they are worn out. The inside cushioning is what gives you support and shock absorbsion for your joints.

Everything these folks said is true. I generally get about 500 miles or 4 months of working out from a pair of GOOD running shoes. But that doesn't mean I'm done with them. After I've used up their exercise usefulness I use them for another 6 months as day-to-day walk-around-town shoes, then I move them to my mowing-the-lawn shoes.
This keeps fresh shoes in rotation for working out and helps me get my money's worth out of my shoes.
Just a thought.

Yep, both for sure. Running is running, no matter the surface and it causes wear and tear on those shoes.
As for timing, there are many theories out there. Some say 200-300 miles, others 400-500. Some say months. Honestly, I say it's a personal preference. It depends on the shoes you buy, how much you run, and the conditions under which you run. Basically, your body will tell you! For example, your knees and back may start to hurt.

both. ESPECIALLY if you do a lot of treadmill running, your shoes will still be worn even though the treads won't be worn and the uppers look clean.
Yes, it is the flexing of the shoe that is the main cause of using up the life of a shoe. And this applies regardless of the surface.
Running outside may well be on a more abrasive surface, but unless you are scuffing your feet, you will probably use of the flexion and compressability of the show, long before you wear down the external part of the sole.

Yes, I go by the rule when they start to not give me the support for my feet, I get rid of them. It takes about 3 to 4 months if I run 4 days a week
