That's not surprising. The formulas weren't really made for obese people. They were developed using "average" healthy people, and just assume that every pound of body weight uses the same number of calories. As far as I know, nobody has done any work in finding out how to calculate metabolic rates for the pounds above a healthy weight.
Thought I would add an update. Got the test done this morning RMR is 1550 and I'm mostly sedentary so daily calorie need is 1860 approx. My measured RMR is lower than the results from the 4 most popular estimation formulas by a good bit, difference in ( ).
As you can see, Katch was the closest and is the method that will probably be best for me to use on a monthly basis (I measure body composition monthly) to determine my calorie range. I will probably get the actual test done in another 6-12 months depending on how much weight I lose over that time and how much my body composition changes.
I had it done a while back, but i didn't compare it to the formulas, sorry. I did find it more useful to use an accurate calorie tracker device (BodyBugg, Bodmedia), which take into account activity level too, not just RMR. Good ones are over 90% accurate.
Thanks Sunshine, did you have the test done? If so, I'm asking whether you saw a variance compared to using the Harris-Benedict, Mifflin St Jeor, Katch-McArdle or Cunningham formulas for calculating BMR. And if so, how much of a variance. I am not asking about variance between different individuals.
A personís RMR is the amount of calories the body burns throughout the day in order to function properly...daily activities and exercise are not included in the results so results I assume would vary...
Knowing your RMR will help you decide what your calorie intake should be...and you should receive your results and an explanation from a registered dietitian following the procedure.
Just make sure you do not eat, exercise, drink caffeinated beverages for 4 hours before the test, but I am sure you were already told that.
