Everything I have read suggests that exercise - mild exercise especially - is really good for back pain - I go to PT and they strongly recommend water exercise as well as stretches and specific exercises for back, knees, and shoulder (current problem areas for me) and you can find exercise videos specifically for your back on here.

I am never quite sure if exercise is helpful when one is suffering back pain. I have tried walking water walking and stretches I learned in therapy, but sometimes it just hurts and inhibits exercise which is frustrating because without real exercise I lose stamina and get into a kind of cycle.
