I use to use I can't believe it's not butter then I stopped once I became a little more conscious of all the ingredients so I switched to regular butter. For me the real butter (in the sticks) gives me much better portion control and made me realize that I don't need half as much real butter as I did of the other stuff.

My 2 cents.

I think eating a bit of real butter would be much better for you than eating any fake butter substitutes.

To be honest I pay much more attention to ingredients lists and much less attention to calorie counts. Not that calories don't matter. I just think making eating real food should be a priority.

I started using Benecol Spread which has plant stanols to keep my cholesterol down and I like the taste as well.

It has only 1 gram of saturated trans fats ..........and Polyunsaturated Fat 2g.............Monounsaturated Fat 4.5g which are both good kinds of fats.

I would encourage you to use real butter and replace the toast. Real butter has an almost perfect 1 to 1 omega 6 to omega 3 ratio.

I think it depends on what you're going for with the buttered toast--as far as flavor and mouth-feel/texture, so these are just some varying spread options you might try that, if not much lower in calories, are at least more nutrient-dense or beneficial than butter...
-olive oil
-whipped cottage cheese
-pumpkin butter or mashed pumpkin
-mashed/whipped/creamed avocado

I mix canola oil and butter to get the saturated fat content of the butter down.
That does not answer your question - but the principle is the same: dilute!
Whip up your butter (that gets air into it so that you have more volume with fewer calories), and then think of things to dilute that butter with. Maybe some lower calorie fruit preserves that you were going to put on toast (in the case of toast) anyway. Mix it in and mix it very very well. Then spread a tbsp of that on your toast. It will be lower in fat.

Can anyone suggest some alternatives for butter that are lower in fat?

I sometimes like to eat toast as breakfast and I've been using SmartBalance but it is so high in fat and calories. Regular butter is even worse.

Any suggestions or recommendations?

My new promise to myself for 2014 is to forgive myself. If I have a setback, this time I won't give up or call myself a failure. Instead I'll forgive myself and keep going.

Ultimately we're all human and if we keep going when we stumble, we'll get there! Slow and steady wins the race!
