I have 7 pounds to go until my first goal of losing 40 pounds and then 4 more pounds by the first of January. My weight loss has slowed down and I always eat around 1200-1400. It is frustrating, but I will get there eventually. :) Thanks everyone for all of the tips to lose these last pounds.
In May, I got to my first goal ( 75 lbs lost) Since then, I'm just dancing around and getting no where as far as reaching the grand finally.....goal weight. Admittedly, I feel pretty good about where, I am. Just the same.......mission not accomplished.

Sorry I don't have any good advice to offer you - I'm in the same boat. My spark range is still 1200-1550, but it looks like I will never lose it by eating at the top of the range. I changed so many hab its to lose the first 35 pounds, and now I need to tweak things more to lose the rest. It's a hundred small things that add up to success!

The last 5 pounds are taking forever to come off! But that's OK, because I have forever! I'm not going to change what I'm doing once I reach a magical goal. My body just might be saying that this is the weight it's going to be, but that doesn't mean it won't burn off the remaining fat (and replace it with muscle).

Never heard of calorie cycling before (I googled it now), but I guess I kind of already do that. Well, my body does it for me! I go through spurts of starving all the time - real, true hunger, not thirst or boredom - then I'll go a week or more where I'm not at all hungry and barely get in my 1200 calories per day. Now that I'm back to tracking and avoiding snacks, the weight is starting to come off again.
I'm 18 lbs from my goal weight right now - just broke through a 7 month plateau. I think that joining the BLC here on Spark and becoming accountable to the team really helped me break through that. It got me "back to the basics" of tracking, nutrition, & exercise.
I hope some of the info I gained in this thread will help me drop those last 18 lbs. I will definitely keep checking in here!!

I am 2 pounds away from my goal weight...but i every time i step on the scale i have to remember muscle is heavier than fat and over this journey i have lost a lot of fat, and gained muscle. Just last month i started taking protein, reduced my fat intake and already i see the difference...
So maybe i have to be happy with my weight? As my waist measurement has gone down.

I think I got complacent as I got compliments on my weight loss success and things fit better. I started to slack on exercise and rewarding myself with "treats" everyday. I am not an animal and food should not be a reward. Since the weather is getting too cold to be outside, I've started Jillian Michael's 30 Day Shred and it's amazing to feel my body changing, and it hasn't even been 2 weeks yet! I think this might be the thing that helps get those last 5 lbs off. Also, just making that 30/60 minutes a day for myself to exercise a priority. It's hard to think I'm being selfish with my time that way but in the long run I'm nicer tobe around once I've exercised. :)

I think the longer you carry the weight, the harder it is to drop those last few. I think we tend to get lax in our dedication to losing. Especially if you already look pretty good for the weight you are at now. But I am going to be honest. I have put my nose to the grindstone, from day 1 and my dedication to walking at least 3 miles a day, hasn't wavered. I also dropped sugar from my diet right out the gate, on the very day I was diagnosed with diabetes 2. I don't purchase or eat anything with that word in it. And I have to say I am at 13 pounds left to goal. I have not see a goal weight in many many years, and trying after so many many ways to do it. I just opened my eyes, and recognized the evil one and eliminated it's horrible self. My Son refers to me as the "Sugar Nazi"
Mind you I was so addicted to the stuff all through my life. And getting rid of it, has finally helped me reach my health and weight potentials.

This was such a motivating thread for me to come across today. I have been seriously struggling with my last 14 pounds before reaching my first serious goal weight. I'm gong to take some of these tips into consideration for this upcoming week!

I can understand how you feel on this. I am stuck on my final 12 pounds and can't seem to find a strategy that works. I can do the workouts but they aren't as effective right now cause my heart isn't in it.

I'm thinking I need to change up my goal and create one that does not focus on weight. I'm really driven by long-distance races. Four years ago I trained for a marathon with Team in Training. It was to honor my grandmother who died of leukemia. There were both exercise and funding-raising goals.
I also need to cut down on evening snacking. In the past, I've taken up hobbies to keep my hands busy at night like crocheting and cross-stitching. I need to do something like this again!
Lastly, yesterday I saw a blog someone posted about dividing your ideal BMI range into 3 equal parts and depending on whether you are small, medium, or large-boned, shooting for that respective range within your "normal" BMI range. Helped drive home that the right BMI for someone else might not be the one for me based on build!

I'm new to this party. I started my journey at 198 - obese - roughly 5 years ago. Slowly but surely I lost the first 20 pounds, slow being the operative word here. It took me 2 years. Then I got stuck in the 170s for 3 years. I made my way down 2-3 pounds a year but that was it. And I did it by taking up distance running. Well about two months ago I said enough is enough and I took drastic measures. I hired a PT/N. I adopted the Paleo lifestyle and I began serious ST 3 days a week. In 6 weeks, I've lost roughly 20 pounds. I've gone from overweight to NORMAL! I realized last week I was in the normal BMI range and I just about went crazy! I also got complacent. For a week. But I want to be more than normal. I still have 16 pounds to go and now that I'm normal and my clothes fit and people keep telling me how amazing I look, I'm finding it harder to stay focused. My goal is to lose the remaining 16 pounds by December 31, 2013. I know, with my current lifestyle, it's possible. The thing I'm finding challenging is fending off the feelings of complacency. So I've decided to try something new for support and I found this group. Not sure if this is what I need to make the difference, but I'm going to give it a shot.

I know a little bit how you feel. I'm 18 pounds away from my goal and I've been stalling for a month now. I just cannot seem to make myself exercise anymore! I'm SO close. What is wrong with me?! I really need to change up my workout so I'm not bored to death.
I got to my goal at the end of August, lost about 80 pounds. I was eating about 1,300 calories a day. I really ramped up the exercise at the end. Started doing running intervals (run a minute, walk a minute), increased my strength training to at least 45 minutes for at least two days a week. I also started doing step aerobics every now and then and started hot yoga once or twice a week. Basically I do cardio for about 45 minutes a day (either walking or the intervals) six days a week, do the yoga once or twice a week, the step once or twice a week, the strength training usually two days a week. I actually kept losing once I got to maintenance and had to add calories...now up to about 1,600 and might end up adding more.

1200-1400, and I tried to stick towards the bottom end of the range. To lose the last 15lbs I gradually increased my activity level but didn't increase my calorie intake. It was difficult, but not THAT difficult! The really hard part comes later: maintaining the goal weight...

I maintained a 29-lb weight loss for several months, then recently regained 5 lbs--portion control slid, snacks crept in, and my exercise program was in a rut. So, two weeks ago I rejoined the gym for three months, so that I can run allergy-free and have access to the elliptical and rower, plus all sorts of strength training options. That has boosted my fitness tremendously in a very short time. I signed up for a 5-K on November 30th to keep me focused on what I need to do.
Eating right has been a bigger challenge. After several weeks in a row of weddings, parties and sports-watching events, I made TODAY the day to jump-start better habits. So far, so good!
We can do this!

I'm having problems now that I don't have an "event" to look forward to. When I began this journey, I had the deadline of a reunion, but now that it has passed, I don't have the same motivation to get up and move as much as I used to. I'm still watching the calorie intake, and have actually scaled it back a bit more to compensate for the lack of activity. I think the cold, wet weather isn't helping either. :P
I'm not quite there as I have 20-25 more lbs. to go. I've wondered when I needed to start reducing my calories as been eating a little more as I increased my calorie burn. Now I have a better idea of what to do as I get closer to my goal.

I am in the same boat...about 13 more to go, but I haven't lost anything in a month. To be honest, I have slid a little on watching the portions, so I am back on track this week on that. I exercise a lot, but I'm thinking I need to switch things up a bit as well. I did 15 more minutes on the treadmill than I usually do, and I'm thinking of talking a little walk after lunch. I will try the cycling of the calories as well. I am at least happy that I haven't gained anything!

I semi starved to get the last 15 or last 10 lbs. off, depending on which time and which diet I was on in the past, and you reach goal, but can't take the semi starvation, so you go back to eating the way you did in the first place. The best thing to do, raise your goal weight to something realistic to a daily "normal" life, when you don't always have time to exercise like a fiend, and barely eat anything.
Good for you. I need to get back on the nutrition and get started with the first installment of 15 lbs.

I think there is a psychological thing, call it a block, about the "last X pounds". I don't know if it because we are have never succeeded at weight loss in the past or if we are afraid of what comes next or if we feel the need to justify the slower weight loss.
There really is no difference about the last few pounds than the first few pounds.
Now, having said that, I think it does help to shake things up a bit. Not because the fat it meaner or stickier but because we can get complacent in our thinking, our diet and our exercise routines.
Routines are great, they make it easier for us to get through the day. But since it's easier it may not be as effective.
Try changing up your diet, add some new foods. Track everything. Eat more protein, make sure you are getting enough fat. Cut out some processed foods.
Switch up your exercise program. Add some weights, change your walking route, do a few new videos.
Quit thinking the last X pounds. Instead think "I can/need/want to lose X more pounds and I can do it!

Between 1200-1800 cals. I averaged around 1450 cals. I used calorie cycling and the weight fell off me. When I reached my goal weight my body fat was really low and my body didn't seem to "like" that weight. I gained 15 lbs back quickly but thanks to my strength training, some of the gain was muscle and my measurements improved for the better. I look curvy and less waifish but still have the same waist line I did at 15 lbs lighter.
The calorie "shock" day actually helps me. I consistently eat really low fat (because I have to to manage a health condition) and low calorie. It sounds like cheating but about once every 10 days, I eat a big ole piece of chocolate cake. It gives me something to look forward to so I don't crash and burn on cravings, and I seem to lose most of my weight within a day or two of that.
Now when I tried doing it every day, it didn't have quite the same impact on the scale :)
I'm down 52 and have about 28 more to go, but I am noticing it slowing down and getting much more frustrating. I feel SO MUCH better, but I do miss the days when I could cut out french fries and go for 3 walks a week to lose a few pounds.

I know interval training along with varying calories will head me in the right direction again.
I've still got 6lbs to go, and finding these the hardest to shift. But my main concern is not to gain anything, so I'm not unhappy. It will be slow, and in a way I don't mind that. What happens when I get to goal? That's more of a challenge in my mind.
Take it easy, don't expect the rapid progress you made early on. Experts always say that weight lost quickly is regained quickly, so don't rush...
Interval training and more strength training helped me break a plateau. It's slow going (I have 3-5 more to go), but it is going in the right direction. I also try to vary my calories as well.

I'm in the same boat you are in. I've lost 45 pounds since 2010 and have 15 to go. Did not lose one pound this year but I also did not gain. I am over 50 and believe my body is adjusting to this weight and I believe I will lose at least 7 more pounds next year.
I did not want to cut calories but am reading a lot about adjusting calories each day and the reasoning makes sense to me. I also will be spreading exercise throughout the day to speed up my metabolism.
Yowzers! I'm so glad this message board has started! I'm setting myself the mini-goal to join the ranks of 15 To Go on schedule right after Thanksgiving and asking for your help to get through the rest of the holidays (including MLK day). That is, if you're still here ... write me good posts, okay?

This is my problem, too! I reached the 150 pound mark about 4 months ago. That's 15 pounds above my long-term goal of reaching the "healthy, normal weight" category on the BMI charts. I've been stuck on this plateau for 4 months.
For me, I think a lot of it is psychological. 150 pounds is such a round number -- and for me represents 50 pounds lost. Losing 50 pounds was a "fantasy" goal for me when I started this journey. I thought 25 pounds was more realistic. Also, I have lost enough that many friends are telling me that I have lost enough and don't need to lose any more. And finally, I need to exercise more to get the same benefit -- and I don't like to exercise.
Between those facts, I think my will to work really hard has waned a bit. I still watch what I eat and exercise regularly,l but I suspect that I am not being quite as strict as I used to be.
Maybe this thread will give me the boost I need to start losing weight again.
My calorie range for the last 15 was the same as it has been for quite some time before that. I calorie cycle and range from quite low to quite high. On average I routinely feel great and maintain my weight between 1200-2200.

For the last 15, I changed up my workout schedule in a huge way with a lot more crossing training especially swimming and took up kickboxing! I cycled my calories wherein I ate more 1 day a week to shock my system and rotated that day!
I am interested in hearing what your calorie range was to lose your last 15 pounds. I know a lot of this depends on activity level, gender, metabolism etc but I would really like to know: calorie range and anything else you did to lose the last 15. I have been yo yoing with them for a year! Any thoughts appreciated. Karen
