THanks for the support - I'll keep my chins up! LOL!

Seriously, I love clothes with a lot of "give" in th waist. I do own a pair of "STRETCH" size 20 jeans I wear and love. But I was under the delusion that non-stretch size 20's would fit. Now I know I have to keep working to reach that goal.

In February, as a reward for a month at the gym, I treated myself to a few new workout tshirts and leggings and sportbras. I took a 3x just my size.

Well, in April, they are too big on me. I haven't found the perfect pair of new jeans, or a graduation outfit yet, but I did get a size 2x just my size tshirt to celebrate!

Looks like the rest of my workout wardrobe will have to be oversized until my budget allows more shopping!

Lisa,

Don't stress about those sizes, fyi some clothes are made smaller I mean brands and other have a little more give, keep trying on those 20's you might find a pair that will work. I know I went down to a size 24 from 30. I know some pants are cut that way. I have a skirt from the same designer and i need another 10# to fit into it and it's the same size go figure. Chin up you are doing so well be proud. I hope DH fixes your stair master!!!

Hi Lisa!

Sounds like your program is going well and you stayed on track this weekend! Woo Hoo for you! Don't get discouraged by your clothes- it's a slow process, but you'll be in those size 20's in no time!! Have a great week!

Hi,

I got through this weekend. I made healthy food choices, I exercised. Now that my stairmaster isn't working, I took an extra trip to the gym Sunday, and took over the living room and television for 1/2 hour to do a step aerobics tape.

I guess DH didn't like that much, so he decided to start working on fixing my broken stairmaster Sunday night. emoticon

I made good food choices 95% of the time this week, and lost a few pounds. I went clothes shopping, but overestimated how many sizes I went down, and felt depressed when the size 20 jeans wouldn't zip, even though my 22's are SO loose.

But I'm hanging in there, keeping my eye on the prize of a leaner, healthier me!

Thanks for all your support!

Lisa

Hi Lisa,

I am so sorry you are having to go through this, but you did right by standing up for yourself. You need to have your husband back you up in order for it to be strong with your step son, if he wants you to fill in the step parent role. If he doesn't back you up then I would simply say, I am staying out of it, you deal with him full time. Marriage is based on a 50/50. Communication is the key. He needs to understand that. He should know that he should never argue about something he doesn't agree with in front of your step son, it undermines you and gives the child much more power and manipulation, which won't help his child in the end. My sisters own kids played this game with here and well one didn't finish school, got pregnant and has struggled to get her life back in gear and the other is a lazy butt. He is my nephew and I love him but the truth is were it lays, he is LAZY. Just giving you some suggestions, hope it helps, hope I haven't overstepped my bounds, either way I am here for you on your weightloss journey. Try not to skip meals, stay on track, take a walk on those rough days to clear your head ;).

Hey Lisa-

It's hard being a stepmonster. I can vouch for that. I have a 7 year old and an almost 5 year old stepdaughters. Sometimes my husband feels like he has to overcompensate with them because they have to go through a shared custody arrangement. He overcompensates by spoiling them and letting them get away with too much. We've been married three years, and things have gotten a lot better, but there are still many things to work on.

When we first got married, his mother lived with us. (You can probably see where this is going.) The two girls walked all over my husband, yelled, screamed, and talked back. If anyone tried to discipline them, Mother-in-law would yell, scream, and talk back. She died a year ago, and although we miss her, we don't miss the interference.

Having back-up from your husband is very important. I'm glad that you spoke up for yourself. If you respectfully tell him how you feel about things, he'll eventually understand.

Daily I am grateful for the support I get here and in the rest of sparkpeople!

Yesterday I was upset with things at home. My stepson talks back and yells at me if I tell him something like, "Oh, I see you have a vocabulary quiz tomorrow. Please study your vocab words." My husband usually doesn't support reprimanding my stepson for talking back to me or yelling at me. If I take something my stepson likes away from him, my husband voices his disapproval of me in front of my stepson. I spoke up to my husband last night, I said, "You know, if you think I'm putting up with this from you and your son for the next 6 years (son is 12), you've got another thing coming! You can either back me up, or pay a family therapist to tell you this is not right, back me up!"

So he told his son it wasn't right to talk back to me or raise his voice to me. He didn't give him any punishment, or take anything away, but I said I wouldn't give his son a ride today if he didn't apologize, and his son did apologize. Because it took him a while to apologize and to do something for his dad, his dad took those minutes off his later Friday night bedtime. So I guess its better than nothing.

I feel good I spoke up for myself, but afraid the relationship will end. I am also worried it will continue at its usual unhealthy pace.

I couldn't eat that much yesterday, only about 800 calories, less than normal. I am so upset and nervous. I am crying as I write this.

I have other problems with my dear husband, but will address them some other time.

Hi,
Thanks for all your support.
I'm trying something new today, I'm starting a challenge! I named my challenge:

MEMORIAL DAY CHALLENGE ALL WELCOME

My personal goal is to lose a pound a week from here to Memorial Day. I joined an Easter challenge, and it helped keep me on track. I actually exceeded my goal for the past few weeks, then got off track yesterday (Easter)so my weigh in today doesn't reflect my best work. So today I'm back on track.

Yes, I do cardio at the gym. I do 24 minutes on the exercycle, and 35 minutes on the treadmill 4-5 times a week. I've noticed in the months I've been going, I can increase my level of intensity, and I'm happy about that. I am tempted to increase the length of my workouts, but was advised by the personal trainer not to. Also, I don't think that I can consistently find time between now and graduation for MORE exercise! I also do 1/2 hour of weights/toning twice a week at the gym. But I used to do 24 mintues on the step machine at home, about 3 times a week, especially for a second workout on Mondays, and on the 2 days I didn't get to the gym. I have a tv show I like to watch while I workout on the stairmaster, and would miss the show if I tried to climb my own stairs, or do an exercise tape. But I know I have to find something to do if I want to keep losing weight.

I often feel discouraged at my sluggish metabolism. But I want those health benefits of losing weight very badly, and that will help keep me on track.

Lisa,

Sorry about your stairmaster, do you have stairs in your house? or apt? use them in the same way. Go up and down. I did that the other night just to move.

Lisa,

I'm sorry to hear your Stairmaster is not working! Don't let that get your exercise routine off-track. It might not be ideal, but you could start doing your cardio at the gym too. Let us know if you need anything!

Hi,

It was sore so I limited my workouts for a few days. It is feeling better now, thanks for asking.

Normally, at home, I watch my favorite tv show while exercising on my stairmaster. Then I go to the gym for the rest of my workout. Well, today my stairmaster broke! I am frustrated, this is the second time in 10 years that the black rubber belt has broken. The company wants hundreds of dollars to fix it, which I just don't have. I am also feeling fearful that this will get in the way of my efforts to lose weight and lower my blood pressure.

I continue to have daily challenges to make the healthiest choices I can with my food.

Friday I worked out when I felt very tired, and ended up spraining the soft tissues in my foot and ankle, which limited my workouts, but I wouldn't give them up!

Hi,

Thanks again for the support.

I pack meals when I am on the go, too. However, when I do not pack meals/snacks is when I'm eating in public, like at Chucky Cheese.

Some of my favorite snacks include fruit, lowfat prepackaged cheese, snack portions of pretzels, and carrot sticks.

Yesterday, I had a banana and small square of coffee cake for breakfast, attended a presentation on Puerto Rico that came with free Puerto Rican lunch, so I had 2 skinless chicken drumsticks, and a cup of rice with a few beans in it - it was great! I was sad they were all out of salad. Then I had a snack portion of pretzels at 4 pm, a lean cuisine at 6pm, and steakums, onions, and red peppers on a hard roll with brussel sprouts on the side at 8:45pm.

My daily total was about 1400 calories, 100 less than I planned.

So I think I do a good job at packing ahead of time.

I did have a panic yesterday, because many rooms in the school got moved around, and I couldn't figure out where our student lounge moved to. This paniced me because that is the only microwave I, a student, can use on campus, and I couldn't find it! I went all around asking, and finally found a student who could direct me to the basement and the microwave.

WHEW eating crisis avoided!

Hi Lisa,

I was going to suggest the same things as coach Jen did. I always have some quick snacks, protein bars, I get the Carbwell ones that are low in carbs and only 140 calories. They are really good. They take the edge off or a banana thy dend to fill you with a glass of non fat milk. That always ties me over. Have a good one. Hope you are having a good day today.

I thought this was very true, but I also must add that it is up to us to make each day great or better for ourselves. We must never let anyone dictate our feelings or emotions.

Have a good one!

Lisa,

On days like today, pack a few healthy snacks to take with you- trail mix, fruit, granola bar, etc. Then if you get hungry, you'll have something healthy to munch on.

Have a great day!

Hi,

Thanks Em for the support. My sodium was a little high after my husband decided to have our son's birthday party at chucky cheese Sunday. I started with iced tea sweetened with equal, and a big veggie salad with fat free catalina dressing, but ended up having 2 slices of cheese pizza and a square of cake, too. That may have increased my sodium intake for the day. No, TOM has passed, the week I lost 4 pounds! Go figure. In any case, I'm glad its not my son's birthday every day!

Yesterday I had about 1500 calories, and hope for about the same today. I'm challenged on Tuesdays because I spend the morning in school, the afternoon at my internship, and lead a support group at a city shelter until 8:30pm, which throws off my dinner until almost 9pm.

Lisa,

Don't get discouraged, is it that time of the month? You could be retaining fluids, sometimes just eating certain types of foods that may have too much sodium can make you gain a pound or two. Keep doing what you are doing, drop your calories by 200 per day for at least 3 days a week and see if that will hlep. Exercising more may also mean you may be gaining muscle vs. fat. Don't let the scale dictate your success, not every week will be a loss. As long as you loos on whole and exercise you should be fine.

Take care and I am here for you!

Hi,

I logged my food this week, exercised at home 3 times and exercised at the gym 3 times.

I increased my water and decreased my fried foods.

Still, I ended up gaining 1.5 pounds this week. I averaged closer to 1800 calories a day than last week's 1200 a day. I feel frustrated, and weak. I think its just awful that I, a fat woman, would gain on 1800 calories a day, when so many people maintain an average weight on that same intake. I also I feel challenged and motivted to do better next week.

Lisa,

You are making good choices! No one is going to be perfect all the time. If you just ate salads all day, I would be worried, because that's not a lifestyle you can maintain long term. What you are doing is learning how to balance your calories without depriving yourself of food or social interaction!

Keep up the great work! Woo Hoo for you!

Hi,

Things went better with the restaurant this Saturday night. I planned ahead what I would be ordering and stuck to my plan. I chose Applebee's, with their Weight Watchers menu (not that I'm on W.W.). Everything came exactly as ordered.

The first Saturday of the month is especially challenging for me, because we usually see friends after dinner, and end up going to Denny's afterwards.

Last month, I went to a diner for dinner and got a prime rib special, then to Denny's and got a loaded burger with fries, D.H. helped with fries. My daily calorie total was 2600! So I was terrified of having the same result this month.

Late Saturday night we ended up at Denny's again. Now I researched Denny's website, and knew they had a fitfare menu that had many items that would be healthy. However, their all night menu does not include the fitfare items! So this time I ordered grilled chicken sandwich, which came with fries, and split both the sandwich AND fries with D.H. These two better choices, along with healthier choices for breakfast and lunch, led me to have a daily total of 1551 calories. This is higher than my average total, but a lot better than last month's 2600!

Yes, I know its healthier to just not eat so late at night. However, I would have felt socially deprived if I didn't join my friends, and deprived in other ways if I sat drinking herbal tea and eating nothing while they all ate big platters of food.

I continue to battle a cold, and to keep up with my exercises. I weigh in on Monday (today) and ended up with a 4 pound weight loss this week, which pleases me greatly.

Thanks Coach Jen,

I exercised yesterday and today, and felt good while I did it, but still have my cold and don't seem to be getting better any time soon. I feel just as miserable as I did Tuesday night (except when exercising). So its a tough call.

EVERYONE:
I have the best news - I am very happy with my weight loss! I'm down 5lbs so far this week, and that puts me well below the red "goal" line. I hope to at least maintain that loss over the weekend. Weekends are sometimes tricky for me.

So thanks for your support as I travel my journey!

Lisa,

I would take it easy and just listen to your body. You could try to do some light exercise, but if you're feeling bad, then stop. Just be very careful with what you're eating while you can't exercise as much, and you should be fine. It's important to listen to your body b/c if you push it too much, you could end up staying sick longer.

Get well soon!

Thanks for all the support

Today I am coming down with a bad cold and feel drained. I have little energy, and suspect I should skip my workout. But I also feel fear of regaining lost weight if I skip a workout.

Any experience with this or suggestions?

Thanks in advance,
Lisa

Lisa,

You should never feel like you can't get what you want at a restuarant. My experiences have been good so far, they may forget but never have they been rude, keep trying and if what happens to you at this place happens again, let the manager know. They will make sure you are satisfied if not you may even get a free meal of it. My mom is very specific when ordering steaks, a couple of times she has gotten her steak burnt instead of well done. This happened to her the last time we took to OUTBACK she asked well done got it burnt then the quote fix it and it was so bloody she had to send it back again. Manager came over and apologize. She got a free meal and gift card for appetizers the next time around. They finally got the steak right the third time around but it was her birthday and it was annoying but she was persistent. You figure you are paying for your meal, they should get it right. Don't feel bad just do what you need to do it in a professional matter like coach jen said. :)

Hey good choices and remember you don't have to depreive yourself of fries, you did a good thing by eating 10 and getting rid of the rest to DH. That was a good choice calling for Koodles from us. CHOICES we all have them and it's up to us to make the good ones. KOODLES GIRL, good job. Keep trying and don't give up on the restuarants they work for your $!

Hey Lisa!

I'm sorry you had a bad experience at the restaurant-you tried so hard to eat well and they weren't cooperating!! I think it's all in the way you say things. If I ordered something and it came out wrong, I would politely ask them to fix it. If it happened again, I would do the same thing. If I were the waitress, I would feel bad that this very nice lady is not getting what she ordered, and wouldn't think about doing something gross to her food. I think rude people have to worry about their food being "tampered with". I don't think you had unrealistic expectations- sounds like that restaurant has some big problems! If you had to wait a long time for it to come out right and the others at your table had finished eating, then I might say something to the manager(after you were done eating). Keep trying! You're doing great!

Hi,

Let me share a learning experience I faced Saturday night. Normally, dear husband takes me out to eat Saturday night, and I make poor choices. Since starting this challenge, I have tried to make healthier choices in restaurants. Some times have worked better than others. I asked THIS WEEK to go to Friendly's, hoping it would be easier to make healthy choices there. I preplanned what I would order: Chicken breast sandwich, side salad, dish of ice cream. So off we went. I got there and I ordered the chicken breast grilled, buffalo sauce, no blue cheese sauce, with lettuce, tomato, and onion on a whole wheat bun; no fries, side salad. I was pleased that I could replace the fries with healthy veggies, and requested them. The waitress said she would bring the salad right away. She eventually brought dear husband's dinner, and mine came with fries, and the chicken breast chopped up on the whole wheat bun. I repeated my request for no fries, and asked why the chicken breast was all chopped up. She said the chef made a mistake, would I mind. I said yes, please replace the chicken breast when removing my fries and replacing them with veggies.

SECOND TIME my grilled chicken breast was whole, on my whole wheat bun, none of the onion I requested, and came with fries again. Also, they had added blue cheese dressing I askee them to leave out to the chicken. Now, I was scared they would spit in my food or something if I sent it back again, so I let the sauce drip off the bun, gave all but 10 of my fries to dear husband, and ordered a side of veggies, and ate my meal with my salad that came later.

Then I noticed they had a lighter fare menu, with fat free frozen yougurt, and that chocolate sauce was also a low fat topping. So I changed my order from a dish of icecream to their smallest sundae with fat free frozen yogurt and chocolate sauce, giving the whipped cream to DH.

So I ended up eating french fries when I planned not to. I feel badly about this, but think I am doing better with my overall intent in restaurants, and that I am ordering healthier than usual.

My question is, how far should I have to go to get healthy items I want in a restaurant? I know I have trouble asserting myself and having conflict. But how big a fit should I throw in a restaurant when I am served unhealthy food when I asked for healthy food? If anyone has personal experience with this I'd love to hear it. I really am fearful someone will spit in my food if I complain too much. I am thinking of being equally clear next time, and warning them I will send it back if its not done right, and I will tell the manager. Does this sound proper?

I've been feeling like I found a healthy groove for myself this week. I exercised, but decreased a few of my workouts from 1 hour to 24 minutes 3 days, 1 hour plus for 3 days, and skipped one day.

My joints are feeling better this way, compared to when I did at least an hour at least 6 days a week.

I have decreased from an average of 1500 calories per day to 1200 calories per day, to prevent gaining lost weight. Some days are hard, but it is working. So far so good.

Lisa,

We all learn lessons along the way--keep up the good work! The more we learn about why we do things, the easier it is to plan how to overcome those temptations.

Hope you're having a great day! emoticon

I think I suffer from an illusion, not based in reality. I convince myself that the little choices don't matter. I mean little choices like one to have a dessert where none was planned, or an extra snack. When I'm not tempted, I can see that it DOES add up. But I have a momentary insanity when I am faced with temptation, and that is an area of growth for me.

Thanks again Coach Jen, Emmyos, and Linloseandwin!

I am so grateful that I can exercise almost every day this year. Today I started off with 24 minutes on my Lifestep machine, and a healthy breakfast.

I commit to getting to the gym today for my cardio workout, and some weights too. I further commit to making better choices today than yesterday!

Lisa,

I know you can do this, take one day at time. Change takes time. Start out with one thing this week, just like we did with the water challenge, then try it with food change one thing that week, etc, etc. add a little exercising, walking is great 15 mins twice a day WILL make a difference believe it or not. I know you can do this. I am here if you need me. Stay positive, that will help.

Lisa,

I know exactly what you mean! I see the problem, but that doesn't mean I'll automatically do what I'm supposed too!

Just keep trying-look at your signature quote-dripping water can crack through the biggest rock! We just need to keep doing the little things until they come together as a new lifestyle, outlook.

You can do this! emoticon

Thanks, Linloseandwind and Coach Jen!

I think I have a good awareness of what's going on with me, but that doesn't always lead to the solution.

I don't usually keep much food with sugar in it around. When foodshopping I decided to try one slimfast optima meal bar. I had it for breakfast this morning, and I ended up going to the local pharmacy and buying about a pound of Valentine's chocolate that was marked half off. Then I ate a few pieces in the car. Then, while at school, I heard about an event where a panel of relief experts explained updates about the conditions in Souteast Asia. I thought it would be good to go, so I did. They served Thai food for free and I grabbed a plate of it. I just got to a computer and logged it, and found I've exceeded my daily goals, and haven't even had dinner yet.

Most of my days are better than this. I hope I can get back on track.

Hi Lisa,

Fantastic! You're looking at your successes to build on instead of focusing on the negative.
Keep posting here and it will help you focus, using the food tracking and exercise tracking is a great way also.
Let me know if I can help--I'll be watching for more of your successes! emoticon

Hi,

I have been a member of Sparkpeople for over a year now.

I joined convinced that the 3 day diet held the solution to my weight issues. I had lofty goals of losing about 20 pounds a month for about 5 months, and then GRADUATING.

But in my first year, I only lost 15 pounds. So, ok, maybe a crash diet 3 days a week, followed by 4 days of unhealthy choices is not the cure-all I was looking for.

I heard that joining a gym is healthy, psychologically, to be surrounded by health conscious people. That made sense to me, so I joined a gym in January 2005. I've been working out for over a month, and am seeing increases in my strength and endurance.

I tried joining a challenge to lose 10 pounds by Valentine's Day, but instead lost 8. I felt horrible and defeated, and ready to give up all my new habits.

Instead, I re-examined my new habits. I had not really been within my nutritional goals 2 days a week, but within them 5 days a week. I've been spending about 6 hours a week working out, and really don't have time to exercise any more.

So my new goal is to meet my nutritional goals 7 days a week, increase my water, decrease fried food, and lose a pound a week.

Thank you in advance for your support during my journey!

Lisa
