That happened to me, as well -- and what shocked me the most was when I tracked my sodium, too. I was getting 2-3 times the recommended maximum each day. Just crazy! But like the others have said, it's great to know where you're at, because it means that even if you start with just some small changes, those could have a very big impact. Just persevere for a bit -- you can do this!

Yup - happened to me too. I thought I was really active and eating very little - NOT!

There are some good resources on portion distortion on SP; they helped me a lot. Once I started measuring and weighing my food, I finally saw some progress on the scale. And over time, I'm now able to eyeball what a portion looks like, although every once in a while I double-check to make sure I'm not going down that slippery slope again.

Awareness is the first step to improvement. Track your food even if it seems brutal; it will help you analyze where your areas of improvement are. Then you can start making changes. It doesn't have to be drastic; small changes add up over time.

:) I think EVERYONE can relate to your experience!

Now that you (might!) be over the initial shock- it is empowering to know what the calorie totals for the foods you are eating really are! Think about it, otherwise you are thinking that you are eating healthy and appropriate portions and wondering why you aren losing weight.

I thought I might have a more serious condition with my thyroid- turns out I was relying on food to fix things that had NOTHING to do with hunger. A little snack here, a little bite there, taking huge portions cause its "healthy" etc.

Congratulations on discoving information that will help you become successful ultimately.

If you don't know what's broken, you don't know how to fix it. So look at yesterday as a positive thing. Now you know what's "broken" and you can take some small steps to fix it.

Track your food for a few days (all of it) and see where you're consuming your calories from - then make small adjustments.

You can change things - believe that!

I've been tracking my food on and off for over a year now and it still surprises me at times! Some days I'm over my goals as calories in small amounts of certain foods really add up without you realising. Other days I don't reach my goals and end up adding an extra snack in to meet my calories. I used to worry about it but now I realise after a month off tracking and not gaining weight that our bodies will naturally balance out our hunger levels so that on average we eat the right amount.

Hey, HAPPYDUTCH !!

I know how you feel. I was shocked when I discovered how many calories were in that mid morning muffin was. Mind you, some days, I'd eat two muffins and that was on top of having had breakfast a few hours earlier. Needless to say, it was an eye opener.

But, don't let it get you down ! And you need to do your best to log everything if you can. Be honest with yourself. don't hold back. no one will think less of you. Logging your food can help you learn good nutrition as well as portion control.

So, no more beatings. You haven't done anything wrong. This is a learning experience. Each day, you learn something new which helps you become a healthier you !

This is EXACTLY what happened to me - and it has been a great lesson for me.

My diet was pretty healthy - a soda or takeaway food only once a month, the odd muffin maybe but plenty of fruit & vege, some vegetarian meals, plenty of fish etc etc. I thought I had it covered. But then, why did I have about 6kgs to loose? I was exercising 3 times a week, plus doing lots of incidental activity. I was eating too many calories.

I made a couple of main changes to my diet, and it has made all the difference which have cut about 500 cal per day - which is perfect for losing a pound a week. These weren't huge sacrifices - just swapping one item for another.

Once the shock passes, have an objective look at your diet - some key areas to change will jump out at you, and you will be well on your way!

It was a real eye opener when I started logging also. I too thought I was a pretty healthy eater. My problem wasn't so much what I eat as how much, haha. I love Spark People and you will too, give yourself time and be gentle with yourself. We all are here because we have weight issues, so there is no judgement only help.
Keep logging and you will learn over time how to make the corrections you need.

Happy, so what you discovered you were not eating like you thought! OK so use this as a motivator and move on. You are here to change your life anyway, so this is just another piece of the puzzle. You are going to be fine! Do you have an exercise routine in place? This will also be another couple pieces of the puzzle, both cardio and strength training. Are you just starting out with the fitness lifestyle or have you just decided to add Spark into the mix?

Take a deep breath. It is so easy to attach emotions to food and to mentally beat ourselves up. But everyone has to start somewhere. Today's nutrition totals are just numbers, facts. Today it is a fact that your numbers weren't what you expected. Now that you know where the starting line is, you can identify areas where you can improve. Tomorrow will be better! Don't give up!

This is why the food tracker is such a powerful tool. I'm actually a big fan of eating normally for a week and just tracking it to see where you might be able to make some adjustments.

I was always the same way... I knew how to eat healthy (I didn't always follow it, but I could rattle off good foods to my nutritionist easily), but I had very distorted ideas of portion sizes. Tracking opened my eyes, and buying a food scale helped me learn what a proper meal size looked like for my body.

So I say track it. Don't feel bad, but learn from what you're seeing. I love that SP is about giving us tools and information rather than just saying "Eat this for X number of days, then eat this as well for the next Y days". I know why I gained weight, and once I knew the answer to that it was fairly easy to reverse it.

I just signed up for sparkpeople, and finished putting in today's foods that I consumed. Lets just say my username should now be SADdutch. I always thought I was a healthy eater until the totals of my day came up. I even stopped putting in some of the foods I consumed because I just don't want to look at the totals anymore.
