You've come to a GREAT place!!!! I would suggest (as others have) to learn to use the food tracker first. You will learn a LOT from it about how you eat and why, and the changes you need to make will be easy to spot....if you're willing to always be honest and learn from your mistakes and "off days".
My only other piece of advice would be to NEVER GIVE UP! If you have a bad day/week/month, just dust yourself off, try to figure out what to do differently next time, and get back to working on your healthy lifestyle. It truly is a journey, not a temporary diet to get you to a magical goal.

Hi there! I just joined today too...and I am super excited about this site and the potential it gives me at losing weight. It is great to be able to track what I eat and how much I exercise. I was very encouraged reading through the posts on this message and am going to keep in mind some of the good advice I found on here.

Do not focus on losing the whole amount at once. 100lbs is a daunting amount, but if you break it down to ten 10lb goals, 10lbs in ten weeks is a really doable goal that you can celebrate when you reach. And then you can focus on another 10lb goal.

Just keep in mind what is set out for you when you joined. It is hard to be hungry at first but stick with it.

welcome to the journey. It is a lifestyle journey and not a diet. you change the way you eat for the rest of your life not until the weight comes off. Start by getting all the junk food out of the house. If it isn't there you can't eat it. Track what you eat as you will be surprised by how much you eat. Put working out in your life on purpose. Park your car the farthest away from the store. Take the stairs when you can. Check sparks or Youtube for a workout you might like to try. Good luck as you can do this...........

A few thoughts: - to lose 100 lbs, you would need at least a year, possibly more. Rule out trying to lose it any faster. - the site is overwhelming, but start small, read a piece of information everyday. Soon things will get easier. - learn to track your nutrition. It is one of the most important factors, if not the most important, to achieve your fat loss. - work on a single change of habit at a time, don't try to change many bad habits overnight. It will take time, but you have to spend that time. Changing habits is largely a question of practicing the change many times over time. - you will need to incorporate exercise to your lifestyle at some point, but there is no rush. Start with correcting the nutrition first. As your fat loss slows down, gradually incorporate some easy forms of exercise, like walking and body weight exercises. - take the measurements of large body parts and monitor these measurements as well as your weight. - be patient. If you persist, you will achieve your goal.

I've lost over 100lbs, and my advice is to go slow. Lose 1-2 pounds per week, and you'll acquire the right habits that will stick. Research has show that fast weight loss tends to be regained quickly, often adding more pounds. So go slow.
Track what you eat, using the meal planner nutrition/calorie counter. This, more than any other single thing, has helped me understand food. Measuring is essential.
Try to shift away from simple carbs to complex carbs. Switch from processed foods and meals to whole foods or home-prepared cooking.
Make your own snacks. Use lots of vegetables.
Exercise in moderation, not until burnout.
Don't get caught up in any magic pills (e.g. anything on the Dr. Oz show or in a magazine promising amazing results).
Stay away from "cleanses" and purification rituals. They are often very dangerous.
Don't get bummed out if you hit a plateau or seem to slow down in weight loss for a couple weeks. This is hard work and it takes time. Sometimes your body will need to adjust and it's normal to have a temporary slow period. If a plateau lasts longer than 3 weeks, then make some new small changes in eating or exercise.
Think of this as a lifestyle change. Don't do "cheat meals" or "cheat days" because even in one single sitting you can ruin the hard work of an entire week. If the changes you make aren't something you can maintain forever, the weight will probably come back.
Do what works for YOU.
And most importantly: take advice from internet strangers with a grain of salt. I've seen excellent advice here but also some really horrible advice.

Welcome to SP! Some people have good luck in starting by planning a time every day to read articles on SP and learn. Take the quizzes, read message boards, and plan your daily, physical activities. Plan your activity time, Plan your meals. Fail to plan, plan to fail.
The most important thing is to get moving!!! Choose activities which fit into your healthy lifestyle, fitness goals, financial situation (don't go into debt to join a fitness club!), and interests. Choose activities you enjoy, and do it daily. Walking is a great way to start. Try to find a friend to do it with you.
Start using the food tracker. This may be your most valuable tool on SP. Read other threads from other "newbies" and find what others have advised.
Choose some part of your diet to omit that you are willing to do for the rest of your life. Examples abound such as choose light salad dressing instead of heavy. Have 1 % milk on cereal instead of whole milk. Add 1/2- 1 cup fresh, canned, or frozen fruit with that. Avoid fast food restaurants except for once per month (or something like that, we go 4 times per year!) Skip snacking, or alternatively, cut meals in 1/2 and spread your meals out throughout the day (I eat 1/2 sandwich at noon, and the other around 3 PM).
Keep reading articles and message boards. You will find tons of support, ideas, information, and information.

the great thing about sparkpeople is that it isn't just another calorie tracker - it helps you learn how to make changes to your life that are sustainable. read up on the nutritional and exercise articles and use your calorie/nutrient tracker for everything you eat and all the real exercise you do. i've taken a lot of their quizzes, too. there was a lot that i wasn't aware that i didn't know when it came to exercise and nutrition. i've had more success in the past month using this site than i ever had using a different calorie tracker in the past.
