I'm glad I found this post. My hubby is expecting results back about possibly having his gallbladder removed and we're both a bit worried. I'm the cook, and he's a fairly picky eater to begin with, so I've been doubly worrying. Here's hoping he doesn't have a high sensitivity to fats after his surgery. At least I know I'm not alone in this boat.

MOMMASGOTINK: Wow! Well, very best of luck and I will predict that you are much happier having it gone and will enjoy your eating. Follow whatever the doctor said, but I hope you won't be very limited, if at all, on what you eat. Again, best of luck!

The 29th was Tuesday and the 30th Wednesday. So I thought the operation was not performed yet. I didn't think the surgery could have been done that fast. For mine, I had to wait a couple of weeks.

MOMMASGOTINK: If you mean "post surgery," too, as far as low-fat meals, I am assuming that the doctor gave/will give you some handouts about what to expect after having the gall bladder removed.

I guess not all of us who have our gall bladders removed have the same results as far as diets go. I use to have around 3-5 gall bladder attacks a year, thinking they were acid-reflux reactions. Well, after I had my gall bladder removed via the simple 4 cuts into the stomach area, I was home free. One of my first main meals was a rib steak with baked potato and butter. (Note: When I was having gall-bladder attacks, it would be several weeks to months between attacks. But the last one lasted almost an entire day! LOL!)

I don't know how others react to eating fats after their gall-bladder is removed. I have never once had a negative reaction from eating fatty foods since my gall bladder was removed. I don't eat nearly as many fatty foods any more, but I still eat enough to know I have no negative reaction from eating them.

Glancing at your tracker, reducing the amount of fat you eat would probably be a healthy step even if the gallbladder issue doesn't force you to. The good news is that there are a lot of extremely economical low-fat foods. Lentils are a great tool for stretching ground beef, for example-- they cook quickly, and a pound costs between 89 cents and $2 depending on where you buy them (and a pound is at least 8 servings.) Lentil soup is another thing that most people like, and you can make it in half an hour for 25 cents a serving or so. It looks like you have fast food a few times a week, so if you can get yourself to zap some soup and stick in a thermos to take with you, it could cut your food costs faster than just about anything else. And all forms of beans are cheap-- if lentil soup sounds too granola-health-freak, think about a bean burrito, baked beans, etc.

And if sugary cereals are a regular thing for you, that's another fast place to save. Plain cereals are sometimes 25-50% less. If you're not ready to go cold turkey, get a box of compatible non-sugared cereal and mix it half-and-half with the Lucky Charms.Every week, add more of the plain cereal, until you're ready for non-sugared cereal with fruit. And now that the weather's cooling down, think about oatmeal. It only takes 3-5 minutes to make, and you can buy it for under a dollar a pound. Cooking fruit in with the oatmeal is a great way to use up a slightly wrinkled apple or a too-brown banana so you save by not wasting the imperfect fruit. Not to mention that switching off of the Lucky Charms now is going to be a lot easier than doing it after the babies are old enough to recognize and ask for brand name junk. Sugar does affect how your liver acts, which affects what your gall bladder does, so you can use the gall bladder as an incentive to cut back.Tell yourself it's bad for the gall bladder, even if it's not.

Really you need to be talking this over with your doctor/surgeon.
There are several issues that come up.
--are you looking for low fat prior to surgery?
--how long until surgery
--or is this ideas for post surgery??

You will want to avoid total fat. Saturated fats are part of total fats.

At most though, you may want to cut fat for 2-3 weeks. Some people have pain for some reason if they eat high fat right away. I had mine removed in Feb 2010, and it was no big deal. I went in at at 6 a.m., had the surgery at 8 a.m., and was walking laps by 2 p.m., and was released at 5 p.m., and told if I had any problems to come back to the E.R. I asked if there was any dietary restrictions, and the doctor laughed. He said " Not anymore. You had the gallbladder removed, so their won't be any pain ". He did warn me about white poop though for a day or two, which happened.

I resumed eating a 60% fat diet 2 days later with no problem. I understand that this may not be desirable for you to eat that much fat, but it is possible, is all I am saying. If your normal diet isn't that high in fat, I would just resume eating regular meals, and see what happens. When low fat is really necessary is when you are waiting for the surgery.

You need to consider all kinds of fat. The gallbladder's job is to breakdown fat for digestion so you want to avoid taxing your body with fats it can't handle well. Maybe WebMD.com could give you some suggestions.

I had my gallbladder removed and I didn't have any special dietary restrictions except that I was told to not eat meals with a lot of fat in them for a few weeks or I might vomit. Basically, I was okay to eat the normal, recommended, amount of fat, but it was recommended to not go overboard.

I just ate at home and ate normal meals cooked without a bunch of added oil (e.g. baked, broiled, grilled or stir-fried in only a small amount of oil) and avoided fried stuff, pizza, greasy hamburgers, things swimming in butter, etc. I ended up vomiting, once, after eating something that I thought might not be the best choice (turned out I was right), but it was really no big deal.

So...I'd say just switch out your high fat products for lower fat alternatives. For example--skim milk, lowfat cheese, nonfat or lowfat yogurt, oatmeal, cereal, whole wheat bread, potatoes (without a lot of added fat), lean meats (chicken beef, etc.), veggies (steamed or stir fried with a small amount of oil), rice, pasta, fruits, etc. should all be fine. Fast food would be something to avoid, for sure. I don't think you need to worry about getting special recipes, just make what you usually like, but make sure it's reasonable so far as fat. So, for example, grill up some lean hamburger meat if you want a burger (and make some oven fries with it) but don't get a burger and fries from Burger King, McDonalds, or another fast food place.

If you eat something and vomit or end up with diarrhea, don't eat it again (at least for a while).

Check with your doctor, of course.

My late husband had his Gallbladder removed, and was only limited with what he could eat for a while. After a year or so, he could basically eat whatever he wanted, except when he had a Crohn's flare-up.

the hospital should have given you handouts that have grams of fat and that sort of info as part of your discharge paperwork. likely in chart form with cute pictures like you see in elementary school textbooks.
if they didn't you need to put in a call to get that info from them.

I went in for pains on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning was told I had to have my gallbladder removed. I am on a very tight, and I mean VERY tight budget and I could really use some help with meals and recipes that are low fat.
And by low fat exactly how many grams are we talking? And do I count the saturated fat also? I am just kinda confused and really hungry...
