Had a good weekend and stayed within my desired ranges. But that's the way it usually is for me. I do well when I am home and alone on the weekends. My problems come when I go to work.

Not all calories are created the same. Had a hot dog yesterday instead of my usual healthy fare. The good part is that I didn't enjoy the taste. I doubt if I will want one again for a long time.

I did fine with calories yesteday, just under 1200 -- but I was a little high on the carbs (137). I like to keep them under 125.

Today I splurged and had a cupcake for a snack after lunch. A gourmet cupcake shop has a van that delivers them to my workplace one Friday afternoon per month -- and some of my co-workers and I decided to indulge. I don't feel too bad about it. It was a small cupcake and I will still be within my calorie range for the day -- once again, though, a little high on the carbs.

Take care,
llou

Sounds like losing weight for both of us is a tad difficult.

If I keep my calories around 1200 I can lose about 2 - 3 pounds per month. This month I have kept my calories around 1200 but have not been able to be very active so no weight loss yet.

We just have to keep at it. I know if I don't, I start slowly putting on the weight again.

wi calorie range yesterday.

Hi, KaySea. I usually eat 1200 - 1500 calories per day. If I am lucky, I lose 2-3 pounds per month. However, that is totally dependent on my thyroid. My thyroid functioning is slowly fading, and sometimes my doctor is a little slow to increase my dose of medication. During those months, I gain weight. Period. I think I would have to literally starve myself to lose any weight those months.

It happened last year, I lost about 8 pounds in the first few months of the year, then gained it all back over the rest of year even though I was trying very hard to lose. She wouldn't raise my medication dose until my labwork reached a certain level -- and I think she waited too long. We had a long talk in December and she raised my dose. I have lost 17 pounds since then.

Now, I am trying very hard to lose weight because I feel I have to take advantage of this opporutunity. I don't know how long it will last and my body will start to slow down again and I will start to regain the weight. But maybe ... just maybe ... my thyroid will stabilize and I continue towards my ultimate weight goal of 118.

Did OK yesterday.

Calories = 1160
Carbs = 116
Fats = 60
Protein = 51

I hope you are having a good day, Kay.

Hi Llou
At those calories, how much weight do you lose each week?
I also ate lightly during the day but was hungry in the evening and ate 400 extra calories for a total of about 1400 calories for the day which was fine. I will just keep it on the low side today.

I ate very light yesterday as I was very busy at work. Everything nicely within my ranges.
Calories = 1057
Carbs = 100
Fats = 49
Protein = 56

Since I ate so lightly yesterday, I was hungry all day today. So I will be on the high side of my ranges today. But that's OK because I don't expect to be actually above them by any significant amount. And I think it's good for my body to vary my intake from day to day. I seem to do best that way.

Take care, KAYSEA.

Old habits take time to break. Keep working at it Lou and you will succeed.

I Did pretty good yesterday.

I am working on listening to my body. When I mindlessly pick up food, I catch myself and think if I am hungry. Usually I am not and put the food back.

Today I was tired but it took awhile to register that I should lay down and rest. I am not use to paying attention to how I feel. I finally layed down and read for awhile and feel so much better.

Yesterday's calories = 1215
Carbs = 126 (not perfect, but OK)
Fats = 65 (a little high)
Protein = 46 (a little low)

All in all, my eating was OK yesterday. But I made a few bad choices that I need to work on. I should have skipped the cupcake. It wasn't that good. It wasn't worth it.

Like you, KaySea, I need to eat more mindfully and stop shoving things into my mouth that don't really give me all that much pleasure.

1200 cal yesterday and 30 min active

I am also working on eating mindfully and making mindful decisions, in other words not living so mindlessly. If I thought about the consequences of my choices rather than immediate gratification, life would be so much easier.

Yesterday went well. I didn't stress over anything and paced myself by saying "no" to myself several times.

Did well yesterday ... stayed within my desired ranges:
6/17 calories = 1123
carbs = 87
fats = 46
protein = 90 (Had a big steak for supper - yum!)

Back to work today, I haven't done quite as well. I had a cupcake for dessert at lunch. One of my co-workers had made them and brought them in. But I think the numbers will OK in the end. I'll report those numbers tomorrow.

Thanks for your comments Lou. Getting the awareness is the easy part. Remembering and doing something about it is something else. Old habits are invisible masters but posting daily is helpful for forming new ones.

Stayed on target yesterday.

Thanks for the warm welcome. It's great to find a challenge in which the members share my need to eat "on the low side."

Kaysea6: It sounds like you are making some great progress in gaining insight into your moods and eating habits. I send you my best wishes for success in coming to terms with your situation and learning to live a healthy lifestyle within the limits of your heart condition.

I tracked some really great numbers yesterday, staying within my goals. That's my usual pattern -- I do great on the weekends when I am at home, alone. But I get off track during the week at work where I have developed a lot of bad habits and there are simply too many temptations. I guess it's sort of like unplanned "caloric cycling" -- but it seems to be working.

6/16 numbers:
Calories = 1161
Carbs = 82 (fantastic!)
Fats = 57
Protein = 82 (yes, my protein and my carbs matched)

Welcome Llou. I also need less calories than SP recommends. We should do what works best for us.

When I am tired I want to comfort myself with food. emoticon
Because of heart failure, it takes me about three days to get over feeling tired. You would think after many years I would learn to pace myself better.

I have learned to associate tiredness with sadness because I am not able to do anything on my tired days. I figured out that I have to redefine what tiredness means to me. Tiredness means tiredness and nothing else.

Yesterday, I kept reminding myself I wasn't hungry for (wanted) food. I was tired, sad and I wanted (hungered) to feel better. Apparently I also am confusing hunger for food with wanting relief from emotional pain.

Welcome Llou......So excited to have you join! I understand going to the low range of the SP recommendations....I have Hypothyroidism as well and it took for EVER to get on a dose that I was able to eat according to the SP guidelines....finally there after a year...lol....we all know what works best for us when we listen to our bodies :)

Well....Can we say success....I think we can....We are at the half way point of this month and between the one day going under by 100 and the one day going over by 100....I'd say the half way hump is looking GOOD!

June 16th:
Calories: 1,339
Carbs: 183
Fat: 32
Protein: 106
Water: 12

Fathers Day today....serving...Grilled Chicken, Tomato and Onion salad, Corn on the cob, and Watermelon.....Looking forward to some fun in the pool with the fam. :)

I'd like to join this challenge. I've been a member of the "monthly exercise minutes" challenge for a long time and have found that it really helps me keep up a regular schedule of exercise. Maybe this challenge will help me in the same way on the nutrition side.

emoticon

The little complication is that I don't follow the SP recommendations exactly. I find that I need to stay in the lower half of my SP- recommended range to lose weight. I am a post-menopausal, short woman with hypothyroidism and diabetes who works an office job. The SP calculators don't go that low as they are designed for people of average height and metabolism.

Also, because I eat so many meals out, much of my data are only estimates. So I find that I need to stay on the low side of my calorie range to give a litle "wiggle room" in my numbers.

So ... my daily goals are:

Calories = 1000 - 1400
Carbs = Under 150 (Actually, I aim for under 125)
Protein = Over 50
Fats = Under 65

Yesterday 6/15 was a great day. I wish I could eat this well every day.
Calories = 1114
Carbs = 103 (Wonderful!)
Protein = 55
Fat = 55

llou

Yes, his new wife is a sweetheart. It was the second marriage for both of them so they married at City Hall in San Francisco and then had a lovely luncheon at a restaurant by the beach.

I think I did ok yesterday. I went to a water aerobics class and that was fun.

Kayseas!!! Congratulations on your sons wedding!!! Do you like his new wife? Did you get to do a mother/son dance? How exciting!

I've been staying on track journaling everyday but I went over calories yesterday....not by much and with the amount of exercise I did I wasn't worried about it....actually think it was probably healthier for me. :)

You are doing well Mandy.

I knew yesterday was going to be a long day for me and didn't prepare. Fail to prepare and prepare to fail. We drove 2 hours to my son's wedding and it took us 3 hours during rush hour to return home. I knew it was going to be a tiring day for me and when tired I seek comfort in food.

Although I rested before going, ate lightly before leaving, had a chef salad and water at the late luncheon, at home I got amnesia and ate mindlessly (not too bad).

I didn't plan what to have ready to eat at the end of a long day. Fall down 7 times, get up 8 times. I will make amends for it this week.

Good job Mandy! You are shrinking by the minute.

Yes, I monitor my sodium intake plus my sugar, water and how long I am on my feet. I am getting to know my body quite well.

I'm guessing not only are you watching your caloric intake, but you are having to CAREFULLY monitor your sodium intake.....I sooo don't blame you for having a pity party once in awhile....The fact that you have dealt with this for 15 years and are so upbeat is not only inspiring, but incredible!

Thanks for asking Mandy. I plan my meals to be around the 1200 calorie range which gives me 100 extra calories to play with. I have this down to a science now and am never hungry as I eat something every 3 to 4 hours. I eat high nutrition/low calorie foods.

I am a short person (5'1") and I have heart failure which forces me to live a very sedentary life. One of the side effects of my medication is weight gain. Although I have lived with this for the past 15 years, at times when I am super tired I tend to feel sorry for myself. These are the days that I am able to just sit most of the day and on these days I try to cut back 100 calories as I am not burning any calories. This was such a day when not only did I have 1300 calories but went over 100. I was seeking comfort in food.

I have gained a pound during these last two weeks as I have been eating in the 1300 range and not burning many calories.

My last blood test showed that I was prediabetic. After reading about diabetes, it seems losing weight is very helpful. I am about 25 lbs overweight and am working on losing 10 lbs. I lost 4 pounds last month.

So in a nut shell that is my story. I will keep plugging along and my goal is to lose 2 lbs per month.

I did well yesterday and seem to be regaining my strength. My medicine keeps my blood pressure as low as possible so my heart doesn't have to exert itself. Some times it gets too low and that is when I feel super tired. It seems to be cyclic for some reason.

O.K....So I know you are trying to stick within the 1200-1300 calorie range....so did you go over that goal you set for yourself by 100 calories or did you go over your tracker by 100 calories....Only asking cause I recently came across this article I want to find it so I can post it on here...but there is also this one that kinda talks about it here...

http://chriskresser.com/why-its-so-hard-
to-lose-weight-and-keep-it-off

Anyway, the jist of the article I read and can't find at this moment was saying that people who reduce the caloric intake to abrubtly and aren't eating the proper percentages of carbs/protein/fat...have there leptin levels decrease more dramatically....making your body act like a thermostat and become more metabolic effecient (meaning burning less calories doing the same activities) and increase our appetites.

So if you are eating at the high end of your caloric range you should be celebrating because it is not going to reduce your leptin levels as quickly......although all of it was pretty depressing on maintaining weight loss...lol....guess I'll always be journaling...teehee

Anyway June 9th: SUCCESS....Very happy girl!

I went over by 100 calories. In the evening I enjoyed a small homemade chocolate chip cookie and a few pieces of frozen mangoes. I will cut back today by 100 calories to make up for my little moment of pleasure.

I'm still considering it a streak because I didn't go OVER calories...just slightly under....would have been on target, but I accidently recorded eating an apple in the morning...which I didn't :( When I went to bed I was on goal....woke up this mornin and went to copy my breakfast and realized I forgot to eat the apple....O'well....I obviously wasn't hungry yesterday....

On a greater note.....I played tennis today and it was very humid so I was sweating like crazy as the sweat was rolling down my face playing I realized that my sweat no longer tasted salty....I'm a SALT attic and have severely cut back on using it.....am I sick for being super excited to not have salty sweat....lol!!!
