Walking works for me I use to be 300lbs. But I also do push ups and crunches and of course try to eat healthy.

Walking is very healthy both mentally and physically in my opinion. Walking in intervals and switching up the pace can make even bigger differences in your weight loss. My sister in law walks every morning for a few miles and she's lost quite a bit of weight, but she said she just feels better overall. As for the classes- I am very self conscious about the way I look but decided a year ago I really wanted to try a zumba class. I finally weighed out the pros and cons and joined a zumba class at the local recreation department (cheap) two weeks ago.I am SO glad I did. Not only am I very overweight, I am also a terrible dancer. Turns out I wasn't the only one! Once I'm dancing I don't even think about the other people around me, and we burn about 1000 calories in an hour long class. :)

I love to walk? Is it enough? I'm not sure. I think it's enough to assist in losing weight, but will it build upper body strength? Probably not unless you walk with light hand-weights. Hmmm. I guess that makes the answer yes.

ITCANBEDONE2013: Yes, walking is good exercise. Yes, walking will help one lose weight, although the main thing is to consume fewer calories. But even if one does not eat less, walking is still a great way to keep active.
There are several complexities to walking that most people don't consider. For example: an overweight person walking slower can actually burn more calories than a fit person walking faster. Another: taking short walks such as parking further away from a shopping center, going up steps instead of using an elevator, and walking down town to pay bills can in a course of a week's time burn more calories than a person realizes. Third: Eventually, if a person does HIIT walking, slowing-increasing-slowing walking speed in the course of a walk, he/she will burn more calories and increase the value of the cardio.
In answer to your question of "Is walking enough exercise?" The answer is a resounding "Yes!" You didn't ask "Should a person do more exercise than just walking?" So just keep walking and live healthy! Kudos!

After eventually finding a few gym classes that I actually really like--I still love walking. Especially with an audiobook on my phone.
I've included arm movements with the walking. I also do interval walk/run . . . if you can't run do the fastest walk you can for 20-30 seconds then slow back down again. Mix up the time of day you're doing it.
walking is a great, cheap form of exercise. You can do it outside or inside (using walk exercise dvd). I love Leslie Sansone's Walk Away the Pounds dvds. She currently has a challenge going on at this website:
Walking is great exercise! Your body might get used to it eventually but then you just have to increase your speed or distance. So stop worrying about that and work on getting your eating habits set.

ITCANBEDONE2013, I also enjoy walking, though I usually do it on a treadmill while watching one of my recorded shows. I think what you are doing is fantastic! It is important to keep moving, and you are doing that!
Have you tried yoga? It's fun, and relaxing and will help you to develop flexibility, while strengthening your body and mind.
You can modify the exercises as you need to and still get great results. Yoga will also help you to feel energized and allow you to enjoy a deep sense of well being.

I think for right now, its totally fine. Find ways to challenge yourself like walking a bit faster, or a bit farther. Set-up a goal, or get a pedometer to track your steps. Walking is great exercise. As you get healthier you may find that you naturally want to add an additional challenge. Keep up the good work!
At this stage, you probably still have plenty of scope to increase the intensity of your exercise by increasing your walking speed, so keep working on that.
Once you have maxed out your comfortable walking speed (3.5 - 4.5 mph), then it might be time to start looking at some other activities to add more challenge to your exercise.
But one thing that should be part of everyone's exercise routine is strength training. Walking is cardio only, and any exercise that includes BOTH ST and cardio is more effective than one that relies on cardio only. ST doesn't require fancy weights or machines - you can get in a great workout using just your own bodyweight for resistance - squats, planks, pushups (modified, wall or incline pushups if necessary) are all great bodyweight ST exercises.
it is certainly better than nothing and IS better than alot of thuings....keep it up

I am going to be honest and say the only exercise I really enjoy is walking - walking outside. I do between 1-2 hours walk daily just dropping my son to the nursery, walking from his nursery to the station, walking from the station to my office and back. I am not a fast walker, probably 2mph and I have lots of weight to lose (which also means I am otherwise very unfit). I have found that when I eat sensibly (and that is a big WHEN) with this level of daily activity the pounds just drop with not much effort. While I know long term this is not going to be enough and there are other exercise types I'd like to try (mainly gym classes like yoga, zumba, pilates as well as cycling outside), I am too conscious at the moment and far too unfit to attempt any of them. So I am hoping that this will do me for a while... what do you think?
