Yes "aim" for that (at most) and enjoy the "extra" that you may lose in the first month or two. If you expect to lose 10-15 pounds a month consistently from start to goal, you will set yourself up for disappointment. The closer you get to goal, the slower it comes off.

A good rule of thumb for determining a safe weekly weight loss goal is about 3% of your total weight loss goal.
For you, if you want to lose 87 pounds, that means you can aim for about 2.61 lbs per week. Sparkpeople won't let you set it higher than that, but the odds are that you'll lose that much anyway.
As you keep losing, the amount you can lose per week will drop.
At 50 lbs to lose, that would be 1.5 lbs per week.
At 30, 1 lb per week.
At ten, just .25 per week!
So the more you have to lose, the more you can lose, but do realize that this is not the Biggest Loser, and those kind of results simply aren't typical.

If you are morbidly obese, it is generally considered safe to lose 1% of your body weight every week.

Only people who are morbidly obese can expect to lose 2+ pounds a week. Even then, there is no guarantee that you will. The more you have to lose, the more you will lose at first. It will slow down then. There are weeks where you may lose 5 pounds, and there will be weeks that you lose nothing or even gain.
Just because you aim to lose 2 pounds a week, doesn't mean you are going to, however if you are consistent with diet and exercise you will lose the weight.

I could stand to lose about 90-100 lbs, I'm shooting for 87 lbs, though.
Is 2.5 lbs for someone as big as me really the MOST I should aim to lose each week? I know Sparkpeople will not allow you to make a plan for more than 2.5 lbs a week. Also, they say that aiming for 1-2 lbs a week will make sure you keep it off longer.
Started my journey (again) on January 1st and so far down 16.4 lbs: 9 the 1st week, 3.8 the next week, .6 the following week (bummer), 2.8 last week.
