No, I've never heard of 7 servings. Five small servings but not 7.

I have lost 6 pounds. Though I am not trying as hard as I feel I should I am very happy about the weight loss. Good luck to all of you.

And it's sad but true that even if you are given an RX people don't always take the meds as ordered.

Had a lovely man in a few weeks ago for his second heart bypass surgery. He hadn't been taking his meds. Said he thought he was done with meds because he finished the prescription and had his heart fixed. Sigh....

No, I would not expect my insurance company to pay for the fruits and veggies, since they couldn't possibly follow me around when I shopped..............and the company can't trust that people will do exactly as the doctor prescribes, anyway. Over 50% of people who get prescriptions don't take them or follow them, according to surveys, and I believe it.

Plan for tomorrow, but enjoy the heck out of today.

LOL, all I can think of if you get insurance carriers involved is how they'll be telling us where to shop and what to buy. Like "Sorry, but Chiquita is out-of-network under your plan, but Dole would have been covered."

You know, we could even ask for "rebates" for growing our own vegetables.....lol!
We could have "prescription discount cards" for shopping at the farmers market!

Oh boy! What a wonderful plan that would be! LOL Do I think it would fly? heck, no.
We're even on a *REAL* prescription diet - not just a vague admonition to servings, etc. He's got us on an actual list of "do/don't" foods. I'd be ecstatic to find out I could get my insurance to underwrite my groceries! yahoo!! LOL

I could promote it, saying that their expenditure for health coverage would be reduced if my health would improve per the prescription.... but, insurance companies being what they are, the likelihood of their "falling" for that is so infinitessimally minute that I have little hope of being able to get them to even listen to such a notion. Much less adopt it! Imagine the mess they'd be in if everybody suddenly started submitting claims for groceries! ha ha

Great idea though. Perhaps we ought to start some grass-roots sort of thing!

They certainly don't have any trouble pressing the opposite side of that coin (higher premiums for smokers or obesity... or giving "breaks" for those on health-promoting programs).

No doctor in my experience is going to write prescriptions for fruits and vegetables. It is really not their job to give detailed nutritional advice and I find many physicians do not have specialized knowledge in that area, but would refer patients to a dietician or nutritionist if they needed help knowing what to eat.

I've discussed my specific medical issues and asked questions of the nurse practitioner in the practice where I go, but nobody has ever suggested they could order me what to eat.

And no, I would not eat any specific prescribed amount of fruits and vegetables if such a prescription were written. I am not a fan of one-size-fits-all dietary advice.

I would try and did for several months that's how I lost a lot of my weight but it is hard to follow thru with on a guaranteed every day basis though and very expensive, but I am doing my best to follow thru with it.

Probably not. I don't think they would want to pay for something that possibly would reduce your risk of maybe getting sick or dying someday... for every single person whether they are healthy or ill.

It would be nice if fruits and vegetables were available to all of us at a very low cost but not through our insurance coverage.

Honestly, I know already I should be doing that without a doctor telling me to do it. I really enjoy fruits and vegetables. I still don't eat 7 servings of fruits and vegetables every single day.

It is a lovely thought. Maybe a refund on your premiums if you turn in receipts for a thousand pounds of fruits and veggies a year? emoticon

While I don't think we will ever see a diet consensus that says eat 1 from column 1 and column 2 for breakfast everyday in order to be healthy, I do think that mainstream science is saying very loudly and very clearly that we need to eat more fruit, more vegetables, less fat and less junk.
And if we are smart (like we all are, because we are here) we will heed the advice.

trying to eat 7 servings of veggies and fruits is part of my daily goals And it does work towards improving your health. The other factors are to limit refined sugars, salt, and fat, and processed foods.

Doctors know that patients don't follow the advice on healthy diets and exercise...that is another reason so many prescriptions are written. People will pop pills but they eat what they want. And even experts can't agree on the idea of what a healthy diet is.

I eat seven servings and sometimes more of fruits and vegetables without the prescription or insurance coverage. From working in health care, I've learned that even when things are prescribed or covered some will not follow the plan. You have to believe it is important for you.

Doctors can write anything they want on those pesky prescription papers. It does not have to be just orders for meds.

I have seen first hand instructions on basics in life on those papers and it was not for me.

It is just another way of reminding us things we already SHOULD know and/or be doing.

I agree, it's a good try but I do not think for a moment that that idea will fly. You're spending (your own) money on food-- it's a recommendation to skip the chips and soda and cookies and crap and instead buy fruit and vegetables.

I doubt it and I really don't want to pay higher premiums for my crappy coverage. I am in charge of my food choices. Now, if I got some sort of credit perhaps for making healthy food choices, I'd support that but again, my company's insurance choices are garbage. And I work for a company of which part IS an insurance company.

Good try but I think that they would argue that you have to eat, so you are better to eat the fruit and veges rather than the junk that a lot of people tend to load into the 'grocery' trolley - LOL!

Would you eat 7 servings of fruits and veggies a day if your Dr. handed you a prescription with those instructions?

My mailbox this week has been full of articles from various medical journals touting the need to eat better to live a longer and healthier life.

One article said that you can reduce your risk of sudden death by eating your 7 servings and maintain a healthy weight. You had to do both.

Reduce your risk of miscarriage by 25% by maintaining a healthy weight.

Reduce your risk of breast cancer by 70% by eating 7 servings, exercising regularly and maintain a healthy weight.

One article suggested that MD's actually give patients a written prescription for 7 servings a day. We all know we need to eat good foods, exercise and try to be at a healthy weight but we all also know it's hard to accomplish. The evidence is piling up though that low nutrition foods, obesity and lack of exercise are killing us!
