My doctor says a fever, coughing, or stomach bug means I shouldn't exercise but that it's fine to work out with a simple head cold.

I'll second the motion to avoid the gym if you're contagious - out of courtesy to others and to avoid exposing yourself to lots of germs when your immune system is already taxed.

What Megadancipee said - I'm sure I spelled that wrong.

Also, if you work out at a gym, be aware that even if you've just got a head cold, no one else wants it and you might want to find an alternative workout.

It never fails: When I'm sick I pull a muscle. In my personal experience, it's best to take it easy for a day or two.

Depends on how bad you feel! As a general rule, if it's all above the neck (sniffles, watery eyes, headache, etc) I'll still do some exercise, even if it's a little lighter than what I usually do. If it's below the neck (nausea, chest congestion) I take that to mean I need to rest and get better, as that can get worse with exercise.
