Get a calculator (there should be one under accessories in your computer. Now, think of 1/2 cup as a division. It means 1 cup divided by 2. If you enter 1 divided by 2 on your calculator it comes up with 0.5. So 1/4 cup is 1 cup divided by 4. Which on a calculator would come up as 0.25. Now you may be asking yourself "why the decimals?" Well, since most calculators don't show fractions the answers come up as percentages. In the case of 1 cup the answers you are seeing are portions of 100 percent (with 1 full cup being 100 percent) so 1/2 cup translates to 50 percent which translates in math to 0.5. Hope this helps.

 DEB2013 Posts: 128 8/23/11 8:05 A Good Morning Sherry. Don't feel dumb. This is a learning process, I think it takes a while to figure out what is best for us. Yes, I chose my own food and then try to find as close to it as I can on the search, when I do I put it in my favorites to use later. As for the portions, I'm not diabetic, but I have an Aunt who is and she tells me she is hungry alot of the time too. So, I can't really speak for that. Does your Doctor have you on any kind of menu plan, if he does and that satisfies you and also is within what you can eat for being a diabetic, you can choose your own foods. Maybe you can search the web for the equivalents of portions of food you can eat. Kinda like a cheat sheet if you will. This has been the best sight I have been on and I've been on many. I plan to stay on this one and just keep trying to figure it out. I get alot of support from everyone and it makes doing this so much nicer. Have a wonderful day. Hope some of this helps.

I'm debitic and I have been following the diet that it shows me but I still haven't figured out what the volume of the food is to be like 0.5 I'm told means 1/2 a cup that is great but I'm not using that much lol. I been using way less and it kind leave's me hungry some times so I decied to ask and see if I'm doing this right lol... sherrie
 DEB2013 Posts: 128 8/22/11 2:10 P I've kinda had the same issue on some foods. Not sure how much I should put in my nutritional value. I have foods I've eaten that I can't always find in the search, so I get as close as I can to it. I've also found that sometimes I have to go 1 item at a time if its in a casserole or like a stew. I'm still working on this. So, I've been putting everything in favorites, to make it easier. Now the problem I have is my favorites is getting very full and only been with sparkpeople 1 week. Hey, it will get easier.

 -POOKIE- SparkPoints: (312,653) Fitness Minutes: (94,715) Posts: 20,879 8/22/11 1:05 P On the tracker, there is a button for "Serving Size Calculator" it shows up when you have selected a food to add, if you click on that, it opens a new window, where you can input that number and convert it to something you know better. 0.5 for a start is half a cup, they are fractions :)
