I can't fall asleep if I'm hungry. But I don't need to be *full* either. We eat supper pretty early so usually I'll have a small snack within an hour before bed. It's not greasy or spicy or acidic food though. Maybe an apple and half an ounce of almonds, for example. Or peanut butter on a couple crackers. If you previously had no trouble with heartburn, I'd look at your food choices. If you've had this problem with heartburn for some time/ are under a doctor's care for it-- I'd consult him/her.
I used to do most of my snacking after dinner, and I became uncomfortable going to bed with a full stomach. After a while I found I preferred to sleep comfortably, rather than snacking, so late, so I stopped doing that.
I don't eat right before bed, but I do eat a later supper these days - between 7 and 8 at night. That plus a run after work seems to keep me from feeling hungry.
If you're on medication from your doctor for heartburn, you probably want to talk to him about that issue as just "not eating before bed" may not solve your problem if you've got a medical issue causing it.
Also, I find that not eating myself stupid has really caused the heartburn to go away. I eat throughout the day, rarely get hungry and my dinners are only 500 calories so I'm not overfull.

Sure you have a setting (or 2 or 3) that falls between hungry and full? If you eat a satisfying dinner 1 or 2 hours before bed, you should still feel "satisfied" or "not hungry". I can't fall asleep hungry either, but having 3 oz of protein and a large salad 2-3 hours before bedtime doesn't leave me hungry. If it did, I would add a small snack right before bed - a couple wheat crackers, or a hard boiled egg, or an apple.
What are your triggers? My husband has discovered that high acidic, high fat/greasy foods right before bed will give him terrible heartburn/reflux. He also has an issue if we don't eat anything green for dinner - green tends to help him digest everything better. So no matter how lazy we're being we always prepare a salad with dinner, and things like pizza or buffalo wings are for when dinner is earlier.
If you got a prescription from the doc for prevacid, nexium, etc., it can take a while for those to begin really working, so keep taking it as prescribed.
If you read the literature on acid reflux, gerd, etc, one of the big no-no's is eating right before bed. Maybe you could try backing into it by eating a half hour earlier each week until things get better. Also, try putting blocks under the 2 posts at the head of your bed so that your head and upper body are slightly higher than your lower body. The force of gravity will help keep the food and acid where it belongs. This helped me tremendously with that nauseous burning feeling I would get when I would lay down at night.
Caffeine, acidic or spicy foods, and alcohol are some of the most common triggers. Take a look at your diet and see if you might be overdoing it in any of these areas. This may be something you'll have to be mindful of for the long haul, so please take things seriously now. I wish I had---I ignored it and chewed tums all day long until it got so bad I couldn't eat at all. I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

I think you need to retrain your body to sleep without feeling full. Because it is just habit. Our bodies WILL sleep when they are tired enough. Don't eat for at least 2 hours before going to bed. Your mind may try telling you that you can't sleep. But make yourself stay in bed - without lights or TV or whatever. Even if you lay awake most of the night. Then do NOT nap the next day. And repeat not eating the 2 hours each night. Trust me, you will eventually sleep without the food right before bed. It is like a child learning to sleep without a bottle or pacifier at night. They don't like it at first but they do learn the new habit of just going to sleep without aids. And they don't even have the luxury of knowing why their old crutch was removed. ;-)
How many other changes have you made to your menu? Could it be a combination of whatever foods you are eating closer to bed time, that you may not have been eating previously?
I guess a comparison between "old" and "new" bed time snacks may shed some light on it.
Your body may even be adjusting to a new way of doing things, and you may not require the night time snack, and it's telling you so by rebelling, now.
As I'm no medical professional, and if it bothers you sufficiently, a visit to your healthcare professional may be in order. Take a print-out of your menus for comparison and discussion, and that person may be able to see where changes/adjustments can be made to help you, without the necessity of pills or drugs.

I think sometimes harder to digest items such as protein, fat, high fiber, can cause heartburn for me if eaten before bed. For me, it seems as though smoothies, raw veggies, steamed veggies, roasted veggies, and other such filling foods give the full sensation without the heartburn.

UHURAST, Our body changes over time and what it can and cannot handle changes. So even if you needed to feel full before to fall asleep, maybe your body is not tolerating that now.
1. Keep a note of what foods triggers the heartburn and avoid those foods. 2. Being too full in itself can cause acid reflux issues. So try to see if you can eat just a little less amount. But choose foods that are filling so that you are not left feeling hungry which means a good proportion of whole grain carbs, proteins and healthy fats. 3. Drink water after the meals after a short gap. 4. Dont go to bed immediately after eating. Either do some reading sitting upright or better yet, go for a gentle walk, even if it is just inside the house. 5. Make sure that there are no other underlying issues causing the heartburn. I dont know if you are currently taking any medication which can have hearburn as a side effect. Hope this helps.
I'm a little confused - do you have heartburn because you are not full, or because you are? If you need to have something in your stomach to avoid heartburn, don't be afraid to right before you go to bed. Your body can't tell time, and you will lose weight no matter when you eat, as long as you are within your calorie range.
start keeping track of what you are eating and what time you eat before bed. you may find some foods sit a little easier than others at that time. and with regards to time, start pushing back how close to bed you eat. you don't have to work up to 5 hours or anything like that, but keep inching the time back to find the spot where you are full enough to sleep but are avoiding heartburn. perhaps start making sure your last meal/snack is 30-45 minutes before bed. see how that sits and push it back another half an hour or so if you need to.
All my life I have only been able to fall asleep if I am full but this past month I have been getting heartburn. I keep reading about not eating right before bed.
Questions-Either how do I fall asleep hungry, or how do I avoid heartburn and still go to bed full?
I am not completly sure this will solve it but I keep reading about it so think maybe I should try it.
Edit: I"ll try editing it again. I only started having it about a month ago. I don't know why I get it and the medicines from the doctor aren't working. I read online about not eating right before bed to avoid heartburn. I am asking here about how to fall asleep hungry to see if that works.
