try just doing portion control eat more meals with small portions. then at least your not eating huge plates all at once.

MILLIFRED - you certainly have a bit to contend with re your health. I know what it is like to try to juggle to cover nutrition basis. Apart from my own issues, I had my late husband who had Crohn's Disease, along with being a regular kidney stone former, heart issues needing a careful watch on his diet, as well as other issues. My little grandson has severe allergies and can't let even the tiniest bit of dairy, egg, nuts or kiwifruit past his lips. It can be rather hard sometimes to get a fine balancing act. The fact that you are well qualified in the health field gives you a much better understanding of the why's and wherefores so have a better handle on finding a balance.
You have done well with getting the medication related issues in some control - hats off to you!
You know, I posted that message a couple of days ago because I was having a bad moment and feeling really down an in need of support. What I have received has been for the most part has felt more like an attack! My "lifestyle change" has lasted since 2010 and I am 50 #'s less than when I started. I had several major setbacks duiring that time including an almost fatal illness. I have reversed my diabetes from being insulin dependent on an insulin pump to being insulin free, I have "reversed" high blood pressure from requiring 3o or 4 medications to recently having to stop taking the last one. I have made successfully made huge changes in my life and am a few pounds from my goal weight as well as going from being in a wheelchair and on dialysis and not even able to walk after the illness two years ago to living an active normal life. Comments I have received have come across as arrogant and unfeeling. I know I was indulging in a pity party a couple of days ago, but I was hoping for encouragement, not put downs. The title of this thread is "panic button for immediate help". It is definitely not living up to it's name! There were a couple of supportive posts but a couple of others offset them badly.

so don't diet, just change your life. "dieting" tends to be this temporary horrible, annoying limit on yourself that only makes you crave stuff and doesn't keep weight off. eat what you want, but in appropriate portions. i used to always make excuses too, "ill start tomorrow", and "tomorrow" turned into Sunday, and Sunday turned into the first of the month. i don't know what snapped inside me but i have changed it. i just got sick of seeing myself look so fat in pictures, and hated not ever finding clothes i was comfortable in going out in. and when you're the "fat girl" who watches all her friends get hit on at the bar except for you, it just sucks. one of my favorite quotes is, "you can have excuses, or you can have results. you can't have both". you can do it, just baby steps at a time. start RIGHT NOW. don't keep allowing another excuse to hold you back.
Surgery has been considered and rejected as an option by a Doctor at Mayo Clinic down in Rochester. He said with my type of hiatal hernia it was likely to cause more problems than it fixed. It would include a "g tube" which is a tube directly into the stomach from the outside for several months and they might not be able to save enough of my esophagus for me to ever eat again normally. I guess that would result in weight loss.
I have seen a dietician and after looking at my food records for a month she said that the only thing that seemed to be a problem was the small amount of dairy I was consuming. I usually get closer to 50 gms of protein each day but the past couple of days have been eating vegetarian. My husband wants to go vegetarian but I am afraid that the protein and iron would both be too low.
I also have chronic kidney disease from a bout with toxic shock sydrome two years ago which almost cost me my life. This makes it even more difficult as I am staying right between stage 3 and stage 4 with a GFR of about 28 and it causes anemia. I tried to take vitamins with iron but one capsule results in two days of nausea , constipation, etc. I do take a renal gel cap which helps with some of the nutrients.
I am explaining this to you more fully because of your expressed concern. I am an advance practice (masters level) nurse so do have knowledge of these problems. I also have been concerned about getting the necessary nutrients in a 1200 calorie diet. I was doing this program, not so much to lose weight as to get my health problems under control. So far it has worked in many ways. I see my kidney doctor again in a month so will try to get more input from him. Thanks for your concern. Millie

MILLIFRED - I was quite concerned, too, until I read your response. Has surgery been considered as an option? Have you seen a Dietitian to ensure that you are getting the nutrients that you need? If not, your Dr will be able to refer you to one. I noticed that often your protein is quite low, which is one reason why I wondered!

"Actually I havn't been depriving myself; I can't eat more than 1200 calories a day because my stomach won't let me; I have a paraesophageal hernia which can't be repaired which is acting like a lap band surgery and I fill up very quickly. If I eat the cake that means it will be one whole meal. As it is I divide my 1200 calories into 3 meals plus 3 snacks. I actually did have a piece (small) of triple chocolate bundt cake today and it was delicious with a cup of tea. The problem is that means I took the nutrition away from something else I could have eaten instead. I am very close to my goal, just getting impatient. Thanks for the encouragement.

MILLIFRED, 1200 calories is the minimum a sedentary female should have. Your post indicates a lot of exercise. If that's the case (mind you, I don't know how tall you are), you aren't eating enough! If you're miserable, you're doing it wrong.
And you can have some cake, but I will warn you: if you have been depriving yourself or being way too strict, you could be setting yourself up for a binge.
Banana blueberry cake sounds delicious. Bake one. Portion it out. Have one (or two - I'm a realist) portions. Savor it and enjoy it. Maybe w/ a champagne flute w/ sparkling water and a few raspberries dropped in. Share some more w/ others and / or wrap portioned pieces and stick it in the freezer. Then allow yourself to have some periodically! Just track it and plan for it.
Hey - you're going to have to learn how to eat like a normal human being anyway. Why not practice w/ that cake?

Look at it this way....
You now know what doesn't work for you. So let's stop doing that and do something else.
When you ask yourself the question "what's the use in starting now?", tell yourself "because it will make tomorrow better".
Do you write down your goals? If not, put pen to paper and really think about what you're trying to accomplish. Make it a constant reminder why you need to make better choices for yourself.
I am so wanting to bake a cake; just a simple banana blueberry cake but if I do I know I will be eating pieces of it for a week; right now I am discouraged because I havn't lost any wigth in two weeks despite sticking to my program, eating right and spending my days working outside in the yard and garden. I am burning at least half the calories I eat with exercise but still staying at the same weight. It makes me wonder if 1200 calories per day is going to be my maintenance weight and I'll never be able to enjoy a piece of cake again without wondering if it will make me gain. I am only 7 pounds from my goal but feel like I will never reach it!
To me, "diet" = "deprivation" = "punishment for being fat" = "food is the enemy"
This is a dysfunctional relationship with the staff of life, yes??
FOOD IS NOT THE ENEMY AND YOU DO NOT NEED TO BE PUNISHED.
That said, there is a LOT of "stuff" out there, that passes for "food," that really isn't very food-like. Food should be nourishing; pop, chips, and other "junk" is NOT nourishing. Food should be satisfying. Anything that advertises "bet you can't eat just one" - is NOT satisfying (if it were, you COULD eat just one and be satisfied, right?).
What I'm trying to say is... instead of going to War Against Food, instead put your focus on reconnecting with GOOD food. Actual nourishing quality good food. Delicious food.
Food, frankly, is freaking awesome.
I am approaching this "weight loss project" not as a diet, but as a total reworking of my relationship with food. I have stopped relying on industrially-processed sodium-laden deep-fried sugar-enhanced refined-flour junk foods, fast foods, "convenience" foods. This includes all the so called "diet" crap - the zero-fat cookies, the plastic almost-cheese... and I have started to shop for basic ingredients and COOK it all myself. This has been a ton of work, I cannot lie, but it has been FUN and the results have been so rewarding. Everything I eat, is delicious. For the time being, my portions are a little bit smaller than I might prefer... but I am satisfied anyways, because I actually ENJOY my meals.
I have "dieted" in the past... sat down to your typical plain cottage cheese, dry tuna, melba toast, skim milk, and just about gagged, and there have been times i literally cried as I chewed. That is no way to live.
On the flip side, stuffing myself to sickness on fast food until i'm 250 pounds, can't tie my shoes, can't climb a flight of stairs.... is also no way to live.
There IS a middle ground.

I agree with many of the posts, dont think of it as a diet, think of it as a lifestyle change. Learn all you can about healthy eating, and I guarantee it will be alot easier than you think. Knowledge really is power. For me the struggles were portion control and not seeing results fast enough but I took the tools that SP gave me and what I learned on my own and 9 months later I am able to say that I have lost 50 lbs and it feels good. Where will you be in 6 months, maybe wishing you had continued on with your journey. Do not give up!

When I began this last journey, I was sooo like you. I was just d-o-n-e with "dieting" and was about to either resign myself to being heavy or, maybe....look into lap-band (but I am a chicken when it comes to surgery so that was kind of out).
All these years...fat & thin....torturously on a diet or off a diet. I just had a gut feeling that there MUST be a better way.
Well, we are here to tell you there IS. I finally get this thing everybody was talking about when they said lifestyle vs diet. Honestly, I thought that was a bunch of hooey before. But once I *got* it, things really did start to click into place.
Are there challenges? Sure! I'm kind of going through one now, as a matter of fact. But I have the tools here to help me succeed if I just do them. The stress of it all has melted away. This is not like the awful torture of the ridiculous dieting years of yore.
Seriously: stop w/ the dieting. It's not simply giving up the word; it's eliminating what it stands for in your thinking. Really soak up everything this site has to offer. Go to the Woo-Hoo boards to envision yourself writing those posts, and cheer on those celebrating.
Fully wrap your head around & let it sink in: no more dieting. That's actually the sane part of you making that statement! It's like we instinctively know how much nonsense all that "dieting" crap is.
Welcome to living more healthfully, where losing weight is simply a by-product of healthy behavior. It's not boring or tedious unless you make it so. So don't.

Diet is a four letter word. I give all new members one piece of advice and it's this,"Don't look at good health or weight loss with an all or nothing mentality". if the only healthy thing you did for yourself today was drink 8 glasses of water, that's still a step in the right direction. Remember, you're trying to change habits learned over a life time. that's not going to happen overnight, a week, a month or even a year. Change takes time, thus the need to be patient with yourself as well as your body.
Set some simple goals. Don't try to do everything at once or you will end up frustrated. Example, if you're not eating 6-9 servings of fresh fruit and veggies, set a goal to eat 2-3 servings each day for one week. if you're not drinking your water, set a goal to drink 2-4 glasses each day for one week. if you're not exercising, don't try to do an hour a day, set a goal to take a 30 minute walk each day for one week. Once you've achieved these goals, then you set new ones.
And that's how good health starts. It doesn't start with "all or nothing". It starts with a few simple changes you CAN stick with.
So, no more beatings, the beatings aren't productive. as the old song goes,"accentuate the positive and eliminate the negative". give yourself credit for all the positive things you do for yourself and don't beat yourself up if you're not perfect. don't try to be perfect. you don't have to be perfect to be healthy.
no more diet. think lifestyle change. thus the reason we take baby steps, literally and figuratively.

I have had the same feeling before. But think of it as a lifestyle change not a diet. When I did that I feel so much more in control of this and I know that I will be able to reach all my goals. Remember that this isn't going to happen over night. It's going to take time and effort. But you can do it!

Dieting sucks. That's why it rarely works. What you need is to focus on getting healthy. We all start with the goal of losing weight, but good health should trump that.
Start with a few small steps, like drinking 8 cups of water a day, and track that on the SparkPeople nutrition page.
Start tracking your food. This doens't mean you have to keep to a certain calorie count, just track your food. That has been the #1 difference for me. I am able to see where I am just wasting calories and eating food that doesn't improve my health, and it has really opened my eyes.
Maybe after that, set up a nutrition goal. I set mine up for a specific pounds lost at a rate of 1-2 pounds per week. It gave me a calorie range with a date that I could look forward to having lost those lbs. I then had to adjust my eating habits to accommodate the calorie range. This has truly changed my life. I am eating better than I ever have in my life. I feel so much better, I have more energy, and I've lost 15 pounds in 2 months, and that's with pretty much taking weekends off the calorie range. I still track, I just eat way more loosely. I think the biggest eye opener for me was realizing that 14 Doritos is the caloric equivalent of 2 fresh pears. Why would I waste my calories on Doritos when I can eat pears, with fiber and good sugar and vitamins?
You can take a look at my nutrition tracker if you like- I'm not perfect and there is definitely room for improvement, but compared to how I used to eat, it's wonderful.
Then, add some exercise. All I did for a long time was walk. And then I walked more, and more and more. And I LOVE IT. Walking in the snow, in the rain (my favorite), whatever- it's a lovely time for me to enjoy being outside. I now also do a short video in the morning, to add some strength training in.
You can do this- use the free tools that Spark provides, and forget "dieting", and focus on getting and staying healthy.

I've lost the focus to diet. I've been dietting all my life. Everytime I tell myself that I will start my diet tomorrow. Then tomorrow comes and I am like well....I've been dieting all my life. What's the use in starting now. I can't seem to get motivated.
