I've had a conflicted personality for most of my adult life in that I am an emotional binge eater paired with being neurotic about being healthy. Thankfully my highest weight was 208. I am now at 189 and still counting. The Weight Solution by Dr. Phil McGraw has been a lifesaver. No nonsense information that confronts the deep personal issues and choices that become physically expressed in obesity. Learning about how food affects my brain and metabolism and how I think and feel has been invaluable. Keep working at it. It may seem an impossibly long journey but you will experience a life you didn't know possible. Remember to live while bettering yourself. Reward yourself with good things you enjoy and throw out your clothes you no longer need. Build a future for yourself that includes health and emotional peace. You are worth it.

www.shrinkyourself.com/ Read Roger Gould M.D.'s "Shrink Yourself" which is a wonderful book on how to stop emotional eating. We have a Spark Team here.

Also, check with Roby Mitchell M.D. whose web site is www.drfitt.com He is part of a network of doctors who treat for hormone issues, which most all of us have who are obese. He had advanced prostrate cancer and cured himself with diet and exercise as he is 54. I found him because my son had Testicular Cancer at the time and I was looking for informaton on how he could change his life and heal himself. He had surgery and four rounds of chemotherapy and is doing well now.

I'm reading "THE SUGAR FIX" by Richard Johnson M.D. who has a lecture on YouTube. Also, I recommend watching the youtube series "THE SKINNY ON OBESITY" with Robert Lustig M.D.

I have Metabolic Syndrome/Insulin Resistance and realized that I had to search out the web and find out how to get my life turned around since the doctors I see at the military hospital just say "Oh, MOM, at your AGE you can't expect to lose weight now, so just cut back on what you eat and exercise a little more." Right. I have GOUT and so I went to look for my OWN help. These three doctors have taught me SO much. When you are putting sugar in your body it is like drugs and you are addicted to it, and it makes you SICK. I know I have to cleanse my body and get my health back again.

I, too, had a critical mother, in my case because I was smart, but an underchiever (to use one of those buzzwords). Last February, I stayed with her for about a month as she prepared to leave this world behind. We loved each other... always had, and she actually became a better mother as she had more children (four all together). I always knew she wanted to be a good parent but had her own issues to deal with.

I'm sure that's the case with your mother, too. Her issues are Hers. Your problems are yours. When you fully understand that, it'll be easier for you to see what it is YOU want. This is not say we're all independent and must be that way. Rather, we're interdependent, and the stronger we are, the more of a gift to those around us, and the less we'll need validation from then to feel worthy.

This getting rid of weight can be very complex, as we get down to root issues. I give you blessing for your journey and for your struggle. I will say.... journaling is what helped me the most. Read "Artist's Way" by Julia Cameron, who recommends 3 full "morning pages" where you just dump your brain onto paper. It's amazing how insights come from the step of pencil to paper. Good luck. Your mother must have been a big impact on you throughout your life. It's important that you do continue doing great for You, not your mom. So that when you reach your goal you can be genuinely happy for yourself, and not seeking any type of approval or recognition from your mom. Moms should always be supportive of their daughters. Through thick and thin.

14 years is a long time! Congratulations! You sound like you have really overcome a struggle in your life! And are still working. So good: you've come this far! And you know what you did to get to where you are now, so just keep at it! Remember that Spark People is here for you when you need support along the way! emoticon

I've always been heavy. At 13 I reached my full hight (5ft 5in) and had the body of a full grown woman. My weight was (and still is) my mother's greatest disappointment. Never mind the fact that I worked three jobs in order to put myself through college and I've never had a run in with the law. No, none of that mattered because no man (according to my mom) would ever marry a fat woman (I'm 47 and have never married). For 14 years I was a binge eater. At my worst I weighted 400 lbs. My bones ached and I had to buy every stich of clothing (underwear, shoes, skirts, cotton shirts) online because nothing in the stores would fit me. I broke several toilet seats and a chair while I was on vacation. If it was'nt so sad I'd laugh but I'm not there yet. Three years ago I hit bottom. I knew that it was time to get help so I a saw a therapist and worked on my issues with food. So far I've lost 108 lbs. by not binging. Now the real work begins and I'm nervous. My goal is to loose 98 lbs. and get down to 200 lbs. I can really use some encouragement.
