First, sugars don't build up in any particular part of your body as a rule. Everybody is different...some gain weight first in their mid areas, others put it on in the rear end or in the legs. Fat is fat, and it accumulates in areas depending upon your body build. I feel your pain. I saw a friend of mine who hadn't seen me in a long time, and she made the same mistake of pointing at my middle as asking me if I was having another child (and this was in my mid-40's! Before she could finish, I could see her embarrassment, and I laughed it off, changing the subject quickly.
It's a number 1 rule, never to ask if someone is pregnant. If you want to know, ask "How's your family life treating you?" They will usually tell you.
On a humorous note, I once heard a guy ask another guy (after not having seen him for some time) when HE was due!
One thing that you can think about is the clothing that you wear. One of the worst things an overweight girl can wear is an empire top (gathered below the breast area and continues down below the waist). And I've noticed that these types of tops have made a re-appearance in the young fashion world. Don't wear horizontal stripes. Don't wear too tight of pants with hugging t-shirts. Don't wear too long of tops. I find that the slimming blacks and darker colors work well to make me look thinner.
Being overweight doesn't mean that you have to look pregnant. Look around at what other attractive heavier women are wearing, and invest in what you like that you see.
Most importantly, stay diligent with your exercises, and definitely don't crawl into a hole. You have a lot to offer the world, and you should keep your chin high. Be proud of who you are! If people see confidence in you, they probably won't be compelled to ask personal and private questions like that.
Good luck. You are heard and respected!
