I have lost 110 lbs. What worked for me was tracking my food each morning before breakfast for the whole day. Including snacks. It was fun and I could change things around until I found a balance with the "pie". If I needed to change my meal I just stayed in the same calorie count. I love to read cookbooks. Have learned alot. And I drank lots and lots of water when I thought I was hungry. Tracking and staying in range and walking when I thought I was hungry is what let me lose weight and stop thinking about food all the time.

another thing I do...

go shopping for healthy food when I am hungry. I like to cook and I find that I am more creative when I go shopping for food with buy only healthy stuff and cook it in a way I like.

My big three are:
something interactive. That requires my brain to engage, games, puzzles,
something moving. that chore I did not do yet, going for a walk, run an errand
Water. Most of my empty stomach grumbles are solved with water. I am in a hot place...

I'm so glad I found this strand of SparkPeople Cafe. I was afraid I was really loony thinking about food at the same times many of you have mentioned. I really like many of your suggestions and am going to try them.

For me, I would start belittling myself after I got in bed at night about obsessing about this. That would lead to less hours of good sleep. And we know what that can lead to the next day.

I know the feeling! I used to think about food all the time too.

What really helped me was developing some food routines. Every morning for breakfast I have a protein shake and a fiber bar. Monday thru Friday I have salad and chicken for lunch. Dinner is veggies and either fish, chicken or steak. Snacks are fruits and cheese or a slice of bread and Peanut butter or yogurt. I pre portion meats etc and have everything entered into my favorites.

It might sound boring but the only time I have to worry/wonder/plan foods is if I deviate from my routine.

I've never been a breakfast person so this breakfast is fast and easy and I don't have to think about it. I make the shake the night before and keep the fiber bars in my desk at work.

I pack my salad and chicken the night before and grab it as I go out the door as well as the pre made snacks.

I eat a wide variety of fruits and veggies so its not as boring as it sounds!

I only have to think about food when we eat out. We go out for breakfast maybe once a month, for lunch maybe 2x a month and for dinner 2 or 3 times a month. So I only have to think about meals 6 x a month! emoticon

Wow, it really sounds boring and bland written out like this. I swear it's not! I eat salmon, shrimp, steak, ribs, chicken, trout, tuna, roast, and turkey. I eat salads with cabbage, various types of lettuce, radishes, onions, tomatos, carrots, cukes, etc and roast lots of veggies like cauliflower, broccoli and asparagus.

I eat multigrain breads, quinoa and barley etc.

I think I'm trying to convince myself ......lol...it's good and healthy and has enough variety to keep me happy and full. And to keep me a hundred pounds lighter!

Staying busy with other things can really help take your mind off of food, but another suggestion would be to try meditation. I knew a guy that lost a ton of weight, and when he started obsessing about food, he would remove himself from the situation and close his eyes and meditate for 5 or 10 minutes. I guess during this time, he was probably giving himself a pep talk or reasoning with himself. It may be worth a try. I have the same problem, so I'm thinking of trying this.

Also, maybe you could get involved with an activity like volunteering or going to the library, so that you aren't around food for longer periods of time.

I find keeping busy works for me. Stick a crochet hook in my hand or a book in my face and I never think about food.

Well when I quite smoking years ago, I used EFT and I still use that if I get stuck in a rut ie. obsessing about food, etc.

This technique is used in weight loss; stress relieve; relieving chronic anxiety yet go to the SP site and do a word search to read more about this technique.

I agree with the people who said get busy.

Fill your life with other projects, exercises, reading, or exploring...
or anything that will create new interests for you and bring you simple pleasure.
Obsessing about food is like watching a pot of water boil...
you put all your focus on something and ignore everything else around you.
It senseless and agonizing when there are so many other things you could be doing.

Think about the God that created it, the millions of people that worked it to get to your table, other hobbies or activities or games that entertain your mind and educate you, music, art, drama, science, math, philosophy, play video / arcade games, board games, MENSA tests ... anything that brings good things and good people into your life and keep you healthy and well- balanced. emoticon Love, peace and joy

What helped me was to take one day per week (Sunday, in my case), plan out all my meals for the week and enter them into the food tracker. That day, I'd also do any batch cooking I needed to do for the week and portion out what I'd cooked. That way, I stopped thinking about what I was going to eat. I also set some times for meals, so I'd know when I was going to eat. It helped eliminate a lot of the thinking/obsessing about food.

I think about food all the time, too - but I don't think it is necessarily bad!

I find that engaging with food through thinking-about-it (i.e. perusing recipes, planning meals, working out nutritional information, shopping, prepping, cooking) is a really healthy, enjoyable way of interacting with food in a manner that doesn't involve continually-consuming-it. I read, I think, I plan, I shop... and eventually, the fruits of my labour are rewarded, and I eat!

You can turn it to a positive. If you are obsessing about something you want to eat - direct your thoughts towards, say, finding a healthier recipe for it, or a substitute for it, or a way to make your favorite restaurant food right there at home. If you are finding yourself "hungry" then turn your thoughts towards planning out meals with more volume and/or protein & complex carbs. I also find it helpful to spend time on Spark forums or reading various articles - another way of engaging my interest in food/eating in a positive way, without the actual eating part!

We cannot avoid food - might as well embrace it!

It doesn't matter what in the world it is that we think is wrong with us, someone out there is going through the same thing. If we stick together, we can do it! I find that the weekends are very hard for me to keep with my routine and I have a hard time saying no to my boyfriend's mother when she has made my favorite(her pulled pork). I've only just begun my journey to a healthier lifestyle. I know that it takes time to break bad habits. Sparkpeople is a great way to help! So many people with so much encouragement and success stories. It would be hard to go back to my old ways and disappoint!

Staying busy and keeping track of the food I eat is keeping me from eating like I usually do. I still obsess over food, though. I just can't stop thinking about it. When I'm hungry and thinking about food, I try to go for a walk or do something to keep me busy. If I find that I am still obsessing, I cut up a cucumber and green pepper and munch on them. I'm actually munching on some celery right now because I couldn't stop thinking about how bad I want food. It's tough, but I have been feeling so much better lately now that I don't eat every time I want food.

Keeping busy (super busy and keeping my mind occupied by learning new things--math, languages, guitar, etc.) tends to keep my mind off of food.

I think practicing mindfulness is a very helpful technique not just for food but for life in general. There are LOADS of articles on spark and all over the web about how to practice mindfulness. But essentially, when eating, focus all your attention on the food in front of you (how it looks, how it tastes, how it feels in your mouth, etc). Give it your undivided attention. Then when you are done eating, focus on whatever OTHER things you are doing. For example, when taking walks, focus on the scenery, the scents, the noises, etc. When you are mindful of what you are doing right then, you won't be spending so much time and energy on thinking about food. The more you practice, the better you will become. Hope this helps!

I've no magic answer for certain, but I have found that when my total nutritional intake is balanced I seldome have cravings and I will seldom binge eat.

If I start to binge. all bets are off! I can load garbage calories that throw everything helter skelter.

I do best when my daily intake is balanced, if and when it is not, I insure that the balance over the last week balances out well - so far so good.

Wish I had the answer. I've lost 140 pounds and still think about food constantly. I've just had to learn to live around it and find ways to manage it...But it's an addiction, I'll have to live with it for the rest of my life. All I can do is find better ways to cope and manage the symptoms.

I think about food, too BUT it gets better! Find things to do or think about, such as...read, puzzles, crosswords or other games, the Internet, knitting or needlework, journaling, scrapbooking, art work (draw, paint, etc), video games, exercise, gardening, organizing, start a cookbook or healthy recipe collection, volunteer work, drinking herbal tea from a favourite cup or mug, read blogs you find helpful or humorous, or write (poems, short story, etc)

I've been 100% on this journey since May 2011, and I'm gonna be honest... I've never stopped thinking about food. I'm obsessed with it. How much I'm eating, when I get to eat again, what I'm gonna eat tomorrow, the next day, the next. I plan out all my meals a few days ahead of time, always cook my food ahead of time for the next day- even desserts. And then I just play the waiting game. I wake up... how long until I eat.... then I eat.... how long until I can eat again? I try to time and space out all my meals, but I still think about it a lot. The only thing that helps is distracting myself. At work (I'm a nanny), I try to stay out of the house with the kids, going to the park, mall, whatever. And when they are at school, I clean like CRAZY. I do the same thing at home, when I start thinking about food too much, I chug some water, chew on some gum, and start cleaning the crap out of my house. And it helps, because it does distract me and it helps to pass the time.

thinking about food all the time is the down side of tracking, IMO. You HAVE to think about it!

boosting your protein can help with the hunger.

You can also go for volume foods. Add a huge salad to your meals, for example. Just be careful with the dressing, cheese, etc. You can eat a LOT of raw veggies for not many calories.

if you like hummus, eat that with raw veggies instead of crackers.

I was like that in the beginning too, but after awhile it becomes more natural. It's good to plan and know what you are doing, it keeps you from going back to old habits. When I was going through this I tried to really focus on whether I was actually hungry or not. I would drink a big glass of water and then try to do something with my hands to take my mind off of eating such as one of my hobbies but not watching tv because that usually made it worse. I would tell myself to wait 20 minutes and if I was still hungry I could have a healthy snack like an apple with some natural peanut butter. Once you get used to the tracking and figure out what is working for you, the obsession eases up.

All I have been doing since I started watching what I eat is think about food, plan what I am going to eat next, figure out what more I can eat if I walk on the treadmill. I am trying to be more mindful of what I eat and to choose better options and I try to measure all my portions BUT all I do is think about food and I am hungry all the time its like I am obsessed. HELP
