I agree with the others who've replied. While a safe weekly weight loss would be 1-2 pounds per week, there will be weeks you don't lose. there will even be weeks you gain ! And that doesn't mean you're doing anything wrong. The weight doesn't magically drop off the minute we decide we need to lose. It really could take 6-8 weeks of healthy eating and regular exercise before a person sees a change in the scale. And that is perfectly normal.

What to do ? Don't tie your emotions to the scale. While it's important to maintain a healthy weight, there really is more to good health than a number that stares at us from between our toes in the morning.

So, even though the scale might not be moving as fast as you'd like, look for other subtle signs of change. Are your clothes starting to fit better ? Do you seem to have a bit more energy ? Are you starting to sleep a bit better ? Can you walk a mile faster today than you could a month ago ? Can you carry more bags of groceries ? Can you walk up stairs without getting tired ? These are all signs that your health is beginning to improve.

When will the scale move ? it will more eventually, but you really do need to be more patient with yourself and your body. You didn't gain the weight overnight, it's not coming off overnight.

I always tell my clients to stay off the scale in the beginning. Focus on the process and the results will come. Are you tracking your food? Documenting your workouts? Are you completing your miles more quickly? Feeling more energetic throughout the day? Sleeping better? Eating more vegetables? Increasing your reps/sets? If any of this is happening, you are succeeding.

You are working hard and doing your best. It can be so disappointing to step on the scale and not see that effort reflected. That can easily derail your workouts or lead to a binge. Just know that your body is an amazing, complex system. So many good things are happening on the inside; it just takes time for it to show on the outside.

Another advantage of staying off the scale is that when you do weigh yourself, you post impressive numbers. Keep in mind that losses/gains within 3 to 4 pounds easily can be attributed to water/elimination issues. A client recently weighed herself after 6 weeks and even with setbacks and slip-ups, she still lost 11 pounds. Talk about thrilling when you step on the scale and see double-digit losses.

And don't focus only on the scale. It is only a small part of being healthy and fit. Are you nourishing your body with an array of whole foods? Are you improving your cardiovascular fitness? Increasing strength? Just keep taking steps toward a more vibrant life and you'll reach your goals.

I do know it's all about weight loss..........but it can be about the journey too. Get excited about your workouts. Try a new recipe..........measure your food. When you do these things you will feel good about what you are doing. Then one time when you least expect your pants will be too big.......and the scales will move to a lower number......give it time. Remember you may be loosing inches......

Hi Terri, Yes I am tracking my calorie intake and I've been doing quite well. I am going to try to step away from the scale, but I'm just so anxious to see some results. When I do see some results, even if it's just one pound, I am going to be so excited.

Thanks M@L, I have not been measuring. I think I will start that this week. I do feel better and when I do not exercise I feel guilty, so I guess that counts for something.

It can take as much as 6-8 weeks for healthy lifestyle changes to translate to the scale, *especially* when you start or intensify an exercise program.

It's also important to note that weight loss happens in the kitchen; "watching what you eat" is often code for "I'm eating better, but not really tracking" and can result in overeating still. Even when you make better choices, or cut certain things from your diet, that may not be enough to trigger weight loss.

When you start/increase an exercise program, it is a common response for your muscles to retain water. It takes 3 water molecules to bond to each glycogen molecule, and this helps deliver energy to your muscles more efficiently, and helps them cope better with the new demands you are making of them.

In the short term, this increase in your lean mass can lead to little change in the scale, even as you are burning fat. this is actually a good thing as it helps your body perform better.

But water and muscle are considerably denser than fat, and typically this will show up as lost inches, even if the scale is being unco-operative. The tape is a better means of tracking your progress than the scale. And if you haven't been measuring to date, are you noticing your clothes fitting better?

nice job on the walking. So are you tracking what you eat....? You will be surprised on how much you do eat. Give it time........You didn't put in on over night and it won't come off that way either. Don't let the scales define you. Step away..........keep walking and tracking what you eat for awhile. You should be pleasantly surprised.

Ok, so I'm trying to keep myself motivated, I've been fighting the weight battle most of my adult life. I've been working out daily, walking 3 miles a day for the last 3 weeks and watching my calories, but I do not see any weight coming off. I've decided to step away from the scale for a couple of weeks, but it's very frustrating. Any idea when I may start to see some pounds fall of?
