Don't work out less unless you start getting symptoms of overtraining.

If you're exceeding your goal - just increase your goal. It's important to keep the "calories to burn per week" realistic as that's what your calories to eat daily is based on.

It's not really that it's hyper-important to me - personally, I rather like the low estimate because it motivates me to work out more :P. What worries me though is that I pretty consistently go above my suggested calorie burn - I have already adjusted the settings two or three times. And I don't want to work out less, because then my body starts acting out - two days without strength training and my upper back starts whining, one day more and the lower back plus hips join in.

They don't publish which studies they used to get their calculations.

You are correct that the more info something has, the more reliable its figures. Depending on intensity, I would expect 20 mins on the elliptical to burn between 140 and 180 calories, so both figures seem unlikely.

If accuracy is important to you, especially on this kind of machine, buy and wear a Heart Rate Monitor.

Typically, I'll do about 20 minutes on an elliptical trainer in order to warm up for my strength exercises. The Sparkpeople tracker says that burns 111 calories. However, the elliptical trainer itself claims I burn in excess of 200 in the same time. For the elliptical trainer I give it my weight as well as my age, and most often I start out with a intensity level of 5 and then increase it to between 7 and 10 as my workout proceeds. I would think that since the elliptical trainer measures both my intensity level, my speed and my heart rate in addition to my weight and age it would be more accurate than the Sparkpeople tracker which only measures my age and weight (if that - not sure if those two factors are even included in its calculation, which is part of why i ask) - am I completely off?

Same thing goes for swimming, for example - surely your calorie usage will depend on how quickly you swim during your 30 minute workout? It really annoys me that I can't figure out which indicators Sparkpeople trackers use to get to these results that are just so far off what I've read elsewhere.
