And that is good if that works for you... but not all charts would work for many of us! And so, we keep wondering, and trying out new ideas...and other means of convincing ourselves we have found that "ideal".

looked online for a chart you type in your age, height, weight and body frame and it tells your ideal weight.
and my wii fit matched it

When I was first told by my Dietitian that I needed to get down to 72kg, I thought it was totally unattainable because I had always eaten really healthily and in a good calorie range, but was still slowly gaining. I felt that 72kg would leave me very scrawny, given that my arms, legs and neck were definitely slim. I figured whatever weight I lost would be great, so didn't focus on a number. She had figured out WHY the continuous weight gain, so was able to reverse it. Well, when I started to get near the 72kg, she shifted the goal post a couple kg. My Dr told me when I reached 72kg that he didn't want me losing any more; that my bloods were now very healthy down from not a pretty site! He was aware that my BMI had me still in the overweight group, and said that the BMI was only a guide and that I had done extremely well to get to where I had gotten. Well, I DID lose a couple more kg, and others started to tell me that I shouldn't lose any more weight (apart from my Dietitian - LOL!) I have been maintaining now for 3 years, and my BMI is STILL slightly higher than 25.

Good luck with your results, and great rationalization :-) Even if you don't get down to the 180lb, you have still done fantastically well and reduced your overall health risk quite considerably!

Yeah, I agree. According to BMI I would have to weigh 183 or under to be "healthy". I think that is bogus though. I lost a bunch of weight a few years back and got stuck around 200lbs, I couldn't get under that number so I imagine right around there is my goal weight. I'm really going to try for 190 though. I think that's a comfortable number for me. I'll just see when I get there though :)

the charts say my goal weight is between 113-125. Personally I accept that i will never see those weights. I think I would look horrible at 125. I seriously would be happy at 135-145. Got quite a ways to go.

I don't look at BMI either. The number means nothing to anyone but insurance companies.
And just because you are at a "healthy" BMI does not in any way mean that you are healthy.

By how my jeans fit is my decision of my healthy weight since I don't have a scale. emoticon If they start fitting snug then I know it's time to up my game plan of getting back on track. emoticon

I started with small goals until I was no longer obese. My next goal is to get to a healthy weight for my height and then see where I feel comfortable and what is sustainable...

I had a great discussion with my new doctor on this topic recently. His advice:

Let's not focus on a number, or even the BMI. Focus on how your body feels when you are doing active things in your life. (We'd already discussed I love to hike, bike ride, swim....) If it is not hindering you, not feeling uncomfortable when you are doing those activities, you are probably very close to an ideal weight for your body physique. If your tummy is in the way when you bend over, you know it isn't right yet....

That took all my perceived pressure away from a fixed number!! (And yes, I have a ways to go yet!! LOL)

Start with your BMI ideal weight, then adjust up a little bit because you are tall...the tables don't work well for those of us who are tall. Adjust up a bit if you are long-waisted, muscular or have a large frame/bone size. Then run it by your doctor(s) for feedback.

My guess is that 175 is probably WAY too low for you...but ask a medical professional who can see you in person.

I actually find a pair of Jeans and work to fit into that. Usually it is size 4 seeing as how I usually go as big as size 6 or 8 when I am overweight. I know that if I can fit comfortably in my regular clothes then I know I am at a healthy weight.

Perhaps you are best to run this by your Dr. He/she will take into account your health, etc.. Also, getting a 9pt skin fold caliper test at a Gym (by someone qualified to do it) will be the best way to determine your body fat and whether it is toning or weight-loss that is needed.

Weight is actually the least important number we have to measure progress by. I know people who are technically obese with low body fat and high muscle mass! It's about physical ability, endurance, and composition. At 205, you can be strong and healthy, while at185 you might be weak and unhealthy. Ever heard of "skinny fat"? It's where someone has a low number on the scale, but a high body fat percentage.

It's something you'll have to determine when you get there, and I suggest looking for specific, NON-scale goals to determine what the right weight is for you.

When I was in high school/college, I was about 145. Those pictures, I look back and seem a too-skinny, unhealthy and unfit girl. My goal weight's a good 10 lbs heavier! I intend to lift weights and have a higher muscle to fat ratio, which means I'll need to carry a few extra pounds. :)

As I get ever so close to my goal I am starting to wonder "should I stop there? Do I keep going a little more?" When I was in highschool my weight was always right around 205. I wore a size 34 pant and large tshirts and felt great, happy. I did have some extra fat though and wasn't too built because I didn't eat right at all. This time around I'm about 28 pounds away from being 205 again but I wonder should I keep on going after that? I am going to continue exercising daily no matter what but do I just wait for my body to stop losing weight and then decide that is my healthy weight? I'm wondering if I should try for around 175-185. I'm 6ft so that should be healthy right? I just need advice! Oh, Tuesday is my "official" weigh in day of the week, but right now I'm 233lbs
